Leeds should copy Championship rivals’ transfer ploy to allow for another arrival – opinion

With Jean-Kevin Augustin’s move to Elland Road being confirmed it seems as though Leeds may be done in the January transfer window.

Indeed, we were told at the start of the month that the Whites wanted to bolster three positions with a goalkeeper, a winger and a striker, and the arrivals of Elia Caprile, Ian Poveda and the loan signing of Augustin seem to have fulfilled those ambitions.

However, there is an argument to be made that Leeds need to strengthen elsewhere.

Phil Hay has said that Leeds need a left-back despite being very confident that they wouldn’t be getting one, and there are also growing concerns in the midfield as a lack of depth has meant that Stuart Dallas has had to play out of position for large periods of this season.

However, it seems unlikely, FFP is breathing down their neck, and they don’t have any loan spots available, but that could change if they choose to copy one of their promotion rivals’ transfer policies.

Fulham haven’t added too many new faces this month, but what they have done is tie down their loanees as Bobby Decordova-Reid and Ivan Cavaleiro have both signed permanent deals at Craven Cottage, and that’s allowed the London club to bolster their ranks with another loanee as Terence Kongolo has arrived from Huddersfield Town.

With Man City journalist Sam Lee saying that Leeds are already ‘pretty likely to buy’ Jack Harrison this summer, and the Whites already having an option to purchase Illan Meslier it would make sense for them to trigger one of those clauses this month in order to free up a bit more space for another loan deal.

One extra body could be the difference between promotion and the playoffs before fatigue and the famed Bielsa burnout sets in, and this could be a way to improve the depth in the side.

In other news, our writers have been weighing up whether or not one man would be a good signing for Leeds.
