Klopp reveals his surprise reaction behind closed doors to Liverpool woes

Jurgen Klopp has disclosed how he usually reacts to Liverpool disappointments, and it’s not the reaction you might’ve expected.

Liverpool have endured what can only be described as a nightmare defence of their Premier League title. Injuries have hit hard, but a collective loss of form has also struck key personnel. As such, the Reds are 25 points off table toppers Man City amid fears they may miss out on a top four berth.

Winning the Champions League may be their best route back into the competition. A tough looking quarter final draw against Real Madrid drew an honest assessment from the boss.

Klopp has had to deal with difficulties during his Liverpool career before their recent trophy-laden years.

Liverpool finished runners-up on four occasions in four different competitions under Klopp before lifting their first silverware together in 2019.

This season has tested his limits, with speculation over his future at the club surfacing in recent months.

Klopp is known for his demonstrative antics and bellowing voice on the touchline. One might think Liverpool’s struggles this year would produce a similar reaction from the German in the dressing room.

However, when taking part in a Q&A for the club’s official website (via the Mirror), Klopp revealed his reactions have been rather more modest.

“Possibly I get mad in the dressing room… possibly,” said Klopp.

“But usually if we lost the game, I try… well then it makes real sense to go home and sleep a night before you then properly talk about it.

“As you get older you realise in a lot of situations in your life that it makes real sense when you feel anger you just step aside or go home and sleep a night and think a little bit.

“And then you talk about it and then the emotions are out and you can really speak about the things that really matter.”

Klopp explains strategy for boosting Liverpool confidence

When asked what measures he takes to lift his players’ spirits after repeated seatbacks, Klopp added: “What I try to do in these moments is to remind the boys of their real quality, and believe in it.

“So be confident, stay confident, because with the quality they have, there is no reason not to be confident. Confidence is based on positivity – if you experience things yourself that is where you get confidence.

“You know yourself, if you score a goal in a game you just think next time ‘if I’m in a similar situation then I will score again’.

“That is what confidence is. But if you did not score the last time, then it may be a little bit different. That is where you have to believe in your quality.”
