Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has revealed a text message from the club’s number one Alisson Becker after his impressive displays as stand-in.
Irishman Kelleher has played in each of Liverpool‘s last two games in Alisson’s short-term injury absence.
Manager Jurgen Klopp admitted that it was a “big call” to select him ahead of Adrian for last Tuesday’s clash with Ajax. Indeed, he chose the 22-year-old for his ability on the ball and distribution.
However, Kelleher defied expectations in his Champions League debut and subsequently earned his Premier League bow on Sunday. In fact, he was equally impressive against Wolves.
Speaking in Wednesday’s press conference, the goalkeeper reflected on his “mad” week.
“My phone was buzzing for about three days after the game!” he told reporters (via Liverpoolfc.com). “Just [with messages] from friends, from former coaches, family, everyone really.
“Alisson texted me as well just to say ‘well done’ and that he was proud of me and stuff. All the messages were nice and supportive so it was really nice to get all of them.
“It’s been a decent week for me! What can I say, two debuts in one week was a bit of a mad one so it’s been a good week.
“Definitely on the weekend I felt more comfortable after playing midweek. I think the more games I play, the more comfortable I’m feeling.”
Perhaps Kelleher’s finest moment was his save to deny Klaas-Jan Huntelaar against Ajax. Late on, with the game at 1-0 to Liverpool, the goalkeeper clawed the Dutchman’s close-ranger header away.
Kelleher explains crucial save
Kelleher explained his thinking when making the save, as well as a surprise moment from Klopp after the match.
“It was just a bit of an instinctive reaction save, to be honest,” he said.
“He was that close in I just tried to get anything that I could on it and luckily I was able to get it away to safety. It was a nice moment to make that save.
“Then after the game, for the manager to come up to me – it was a nice moment for me. I wasn’t expecting it so it was a nice moment.”
Kelleher could play again on Wednesday when Liverpool travel to Denmark to face Midtjylland in their final Group D game.
The game is a dead rubber, with the win over Ajax cementing the Reds’ spot at the top.
