Kipani is the musical project of Tiffany Jhingoo, a singer/songwriter currently based in New York. An indie-pop sensation singing about surreal experiences, Tiffany is about to release her upcoming EP in June 2020. We sat down to chat with her about her single ‘Above’, discovering new music and much more!
Why did you enter the music industry?
I’ve always had a passion for music and it has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I had done studio work before, but nothing compared to this project. Everything came together at the right time for this to happen.
What can you tell us about your new single ‘Above’?
‘Above’ is my fifth release. It was written about a past experience that was so life-alerting it almost felt surreal. Originally, I did not intend to release this as a single, but the lyrics felt like they were relevant to the unprecedented time we are all facing right now.
What was the writing and recording process like?
For me, ‘Above’ was a song that sort of wrote itself. My emotions tend to heavily influence my writing and this was something I must have needed to get out. Some songs are definitely more difficult than others when it comes to the recording process, but because we rehearsed this one so much with the band prior to recording. We had everything structured so it made the process super smooth.
Does ‘Above’ have any significant meaning for you?
Although all my music is rooted in my own feelings and experiences, this song, in particular, has a very significant meaning to me. It was something I wrote to help me get through a trying time in my life when everything seemed like it was crumbling around me.
What do you hope people will take from the single?
I hope that people who need to hear something like this, do. Maybe it will help them step outside of their current situation, whatever that may be, to gain perspective and solace knowing they are not the only ones who have ever felt a certain way. I don’t know, that’s just my corny aspirations for this single, I guess.
What is more challenging for you – melody or lyrics?
I tend to come up with melodies constantly. You should see my cell phone, it is packed with random recordings when something pops into my head. So, I would say that lyrics are more of a challenge. However, once I feel inspired and know what I want to write about it is the best feeling to have the two come together seamlessly.
How do you keep yourself motivated?
To be honest, sometimes it is a struggle. There are a lot of things in this industry that knocks you down, but seeing ideas evolve and actually becoming real is what keeps me going. I love writing new songs and showing it to the band for the first time. It’s immersing myself in this creative atmosphere that is so addictive. For me, it’s not about the numbers but about the feeling it gives me to really let loose and put everything I have into something I’m passionate about.
How would you describe your sound?
It is such a hard thing to categorise, but I would say my sound is in the realm of the indie-pop genre. My goal was to create a sound that we can easily replicate live, which is why I strive to track everything with real instruments in the studio versus using synthetic programmed sounds. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely appreciate music that uses more of a synth sound, but for my stuff, it is just a personal preference to have the live band coming through.
What do you think is the best way to discover new music?
I think you have to break outside the stuff the media and industry are forcing down our throats. Explore playlists and music blogs (such as this one) that are highlighting new or lesser-known talent. There is so much music out there to discover!
What does the rest of 2020 hold for Kipani?
There are a lot of exciting things happening this year! My first EP is being released on June 12th. We have tons of new music we’ve been dying to get out there, so lots of studio work ahead. Once we are able to do so we will be taking things on the road and bringing our set to the people.
