South African native, but based in London, singer-songwriter Ian Holmes is the next pop sensation. With only two tracks to his name (at least that’s the case on Spotify), Ian has started building a strong reputation and a loyal following. We had a chat with the insatiable artist about his latest track ‘Goodbye Kiss’ and much more!
Why did you choose to enter the music industry?
Music has always been my thing, and I hated working in an office. It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid and the thrill of leaving my comfort zone and chasing the dream makes me feel alive.
What can you tell us about ‘Goodbye Kiss’?
It’s not about a breakup as many have assumed. I lost my mother a few years ago and I remember having some pretty heated arguments with her shortly before she passed. This song is about the regret of leaving things on that sour note. It plagued my mind for ages, it still does, and I dreamt about it for a long time after. This song is the soundtrack to where my head was at during that time.
What was the recording and writing process like?
I wrote it in my former one bed flat in Edinburgh; just me and an acoustic guitar. I had a cat around that used to randomly meow at my wardrobe. It freaked me out. I thought it was ghosts which no doubt influence the spooky sound of the production.
What do you hope people take from the single?
My social media? *laughs*
I don’t really hope they take anything from it, to be honest. It’s quite a personal song and it’s really just me getting some stuff off my chest. I suppose people might read this and think twice about saying things they might regret. That could be cool.
Which is more challenging for you – melody or lyrics?
Lyrics. I often come up with a line or two that I like and then it’s a case of trying to fit in the rest of the puzzle pieces around it. I also often write lines, think they’re cool, then come back a day later and think they’re awful.
Describe your music in three words.
I’m bad at this. Energetic, emotive, aggressive.
What do you think is the best way to discover new music?
Spotify suggested playlists and artists has been really doing it for me the past couple of years, as well as online music blogs. Find an artist you like, find a blog they’re featured in and explore other artists in said blog.
What does the future hold for Ian Holmes?
Well, I’m not so sure what 2020 holds for anyone at this point! I’m just looking to reach people, share my music, find people that connect with me and bring them along for the ride.
What advice do you have for a person planning to become a musician?
Start early. Practise. Experiment. Recognise that hard work will get you where you want to be, more so than getting a “lucky break” (he says while working hard and praying for a lucky break).
