It’s rare to hear Paul Merson making a good point on Sky Sports, but this time he’s hit the nail on the head with one of his takes.
The former Arsenal star was asked whether or not he thinks this Liverpool team are a better side than they were last season, and his answer was very well put together.
Merson states that Liverpool’s confidence and belief is the difference this season.
He said: “I can’t speak highly enough of Liverpool (and) the way they’ve come back this season having done what they’ve done.
“It would have been easy to have won the Champions League and thought, ‘How are we gonna beat Man City?’, but they’ve all come back with the right attitude and gone ‘We’ll take them on again this year.’”
He’s spot on with his analysis as well. They haven’t been demoralised by losing the league title by one point last season, and they’ve come back even stronger – winning each of their opening six games.

Compare this to Tottenham, who seem rather deflated after losing the Champions League final last term – they were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by League Two side Colchester United on penalties on Tuesday and sit seventh in the Premier League – and it’s hard to disagree with Merson’s comments on Liverpool’s midset.
It remains to be seen if this is the year for the Reds to break their league title drought, but they certainly have a great chance of doing just that if they can keep up their good form.
