How Leicester helped keep Arsenal record alive

Leicester see off Liverpool

Liverpool took on Leicester City in Tuesday’s late Premier League kick-off.

Jurgen Klopp’s side headed into the game having lost just one match across all competitions so far this season.

The Reds were also the joint-top scorers in the Premier League and had one of the best defensive records in the division.

Leicester, on the other hand, have had a pretty average start to 2021/22, which has included them failing to make it into the knockout rounds of the Europa League and has seen them spend much of the season languishing in midtable.

So, especially after Jurgen Klopp’s side were handed a rest over the Boxing Day weekend, a Liverpool win was widely expected.

However, the Reds looked far from their best on the evening, with Joel Matip perhaps their best performer on the night.

Matip, though, could not prevent Ademola Lookman from netting the only goal of the game 58 minutes in:

The result leaves Liverpool second in the Premier League, level on points with Chelsea and six points behind Manchester City with no games in hand.

The result on Tuesday also means Arsenal have been able to keep an impressive record alive for another season.

The Gunners, of course, are the only team in PL history to go a full season unbeaten, but that record was already intact anyway as every side had lost a league game already in 2021/22.

Arsenal, though, held another record from back in 2001/02, when they became the only side to score in every Premier League game across a season.

And, after Leicester prevented Liverpool from scoring on Tuesday, that record stands for at least another season.
