On the day that Luck and Strange, David Gilmour’s superb new album, is released, David and his new band are giving us an extra treat – a look at how rehearsals are going for their tour which begins on September 27th in Rome, Italy. As you’ll see below, if you read this before 5pm UK time on Friday, that’s when the live stream starts. What will they play? How much will they allow us to see of the current rehearsals? All will be answered this afternoon when the stream begins!

Pink Floyd “reinvent themselves” in new issue of Classic Rock magazine
Classic Rock magazine (cover date April 2021, issue number 286) (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/6936929/classic-rock-magazine-single-issue.thtml?) is well worth tracking down. A detailed, twelve page article written by Pink Floyd biographer Mark Blake takes a close look at life for the band immediately after Syd Barrett left it. Set The Controls For The Moon investigates how the band got back on their feet following Syd’s departure, and shows how they reinvented themselves. Blake details how this came via strange, afternoon shows for school kids in the Netherlands, bizarre promo videos, unusual soundtrack albums, and shows which were rather avant-garde – as well as albums which showed the development of the band’s sound. As ever, Blake’s writing proves enlightening and entertaining, peppered with comments from the musicians themselves. Well worth a read! Elsewhere in the magazine is a review of the new book, The Lyrics of Syd Barrett (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/the-lyrics-of-syd-barrett-new-book-out-now.html), a large feature on Kate Bush’s (rather limited) live excursions, and an equally large interview with Vince Furnier. There’s also features on Uriah Heep, Metallica, and The Pretty Things, plus plenty of other articles to keep you busy. The magazine is now available from all good UK stores, and will be in selected outlets worldwide in due course as an import. Alternatively, you can buy individual issues (again, worldwide) from this direct link (https://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/Classic-Rock-Print-Back-Issues/).

Roger Waters – Dark Side Redux picture disc in 2024 Record Store Day
Just revealed is the list of exclusives that will be made available as part of the 2024 Record Store Day, which is being held on 20th April at all participating, independent stockists. Amongst the huge array of special editions, all of which are produced in varying degrees of limited numbers, is one for the Roger Waters collectors out there. As you will be aware, last year he released his Redux of The Dark Side Of The Moon, which – on vinyl – was issued in nine different versions, from standard black to almost any colour you like. Nine always felt an odd number (literally) for this release, and a tenth edition has just been revealed. On the Record Store Day list, they have included a limited edition 1LP picture disc of the album that will be individually numbered in a die-cut sleeve. There will be 3000 copies worldwide, so actually in greater numbers than some of the different colour variants of the album, which were all 2LP sets. We suspect they’ve been able to squeeze the album (without the additional track that came with the vinyl versions last year) onto a single LP, but obviously we don’t know at this stage if there has been any editing to help it fit. And, as we’ve mentioned previously, all the limited edition items are released just through RSD participating stores on 20th April 2024 – go to RecordStoreDay.com (https://www.RecordStoreDay.com) or RecordStoreDay.co.uk (https://www.RecordStoreDay.co.uk) for more details of who those will be. A reminder that it will ONLY be these stores participating; the stores themselves can’t sell it online – the record will become available for customers coming through the door of the store from the morning of the 20th (and not before), in limited quantities – first come, first served, and only one copy per customer. After RSD, if copies remain, the retailers may put them for sale online (and of course, there’ll also be copies on eBay inevitably…).

A Doorway to Atmospheric Nostalgia
Picture standing at a doorway, enveloped by the atmospheric and wistful sounds of The Formalist’s ‘Happenstance.’ The distant echoes of pop music, layered with a deep, throbbing beat, create an enigmatic aura that captivates from the first note.
