Celtic knocked back after approach for Newcastle player

Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie revealed that Celtic had made an approach to sign Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu.

It was also suggested that there was keen interest from Nottingham Forest in the Ghana international.

However, Atsu has since turned down the opportunity to leave Newcastle and is determined to fight for his place in the team, as reported on the Sky Sports Transfer Centre (31/01/2020, 17:46).

He has been a fairly sporadic figure at St. James’ Park this season, making six Premier League starts and a further 12 substitute appearances, contributing three assists during that time.

The 28-year-old was a standout performer in Newcastle’s FA Cup first leg against Rochdale, but he has not shown that type of form enough to get himself into the team on a more regular basis.

Celtic find themselves in a tightly fought battle with Rangers to become SPFL champions at the end of the season, so will be looking for somebody who can strengthen their side, as they aim to overcome their Old Firm rivals.

If Atsu had gone to join the Scottish giants, he will likely have been competing for a starting berth with James Forrest, who has started 22 league games this season, scoring a total of nine goals.

Therefore, he may not have actually got that much more game time in Scotland than he’s getting now, which could have played into his thinking.
