Beneath the Surface with Minoh

Welcome back friends to another Beneath the Surface instalment. Today we are joined by the intriguing Minoh, off the back of recent single release ‘Million Miles’. A Korean-German synth-punk duo, we get into all things music below. So let’s get stuck in!

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?
I think I was 4 years old and it was the moment when I first got “on stage“ to perform with other kids in a musical for a Christmas event in a Korean church. Rehearsing the songs and preparing to go on stage was the best feeling in the world …and one of the earliest memories I have of my childhood.

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?
The music we make is like a rebellious dance party with a punky twist. It might give you a taste of 80s Pop mixed with a hint of New Romantic and disco vibes. But the low guitar riffs and gritty bass sound make it clear that we’re not aiming to please everyone. It’s akin to boldly displaying the middle finger amidst a beautiful flower bouquet. This is precisely why we refer to our sound as Disco Punk.

What does your creative process look like?
My creative process usually begins with an initial riff idea that I develop and refine in my home studio. Once I have a solid foundation, I share it with Guido, who contributes his bass skills to enhance the track. This collaborative phase sparks inspiration for me to craft lyrics and vocals. In terms of the beat, I typically handle it myself by playing it on the midi keyboard. However, we recently decided to experiment and involve a drummer in the process. We headed to the studio and worked closely with the drummer to explore different rhythms and find the perfect beat for the song. As of late, I’ve come to recognize the importance of seeking input from others to fully unlock my creative potential and achieve a satisfying outcome for the song. While I enjoy creating beats on my own, collaborating with a drummer has added a fresh dynamic to our music-making process.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)
I ‘d love to collaborate with Pat Banatar, Blondie or Le Tigre XD

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?
Never hesitate to express yourself, no matter how inappropriate it may seem. Be proud of yourself being different.

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?
Make a pause for a few days. More physical activities like walking or work outs. Search, listen and play new music.

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on? We want to release an album at the end of the year, after releasing some singles.
