On todays edition of Beneath The Surface, we got to chatting with the wonderful Juliet July. So grab yourself a cup of tea…or perhaps a refreshing G&T/ ice cold beer (it’s 5pm somewhere and whose even keeping track of days anymore?), sit back and sink your teeth into this juicy segment…
What first got you into music/who would you say inspired you to make music?
I think it is in my DNA. Ever since I was able to walk I started to dance , sing and perform little ‘shows’ to everybody. My dad is a huge music lover so I think that definitely played a role.
How would you describe the music you are currently creating?
It’s a blend of different styles. Something like Soul meets alternative R&B with some jazzy influences. Currently I am expanding this with more funk influences.
What does your creative process look like?
When I receive a production to write on, I listen to it a couple times and feel what kind of ‘mood’ it gives me. It’s like I am visualizing the emotions it brings out of me. After that I, most of the time, start with harmonizing to the beat. I always create the structure of the song by first coming up with the melody and only after I have hummed or created the whole song in a ‘gibberish’ kind of way , I start the actual writing process. It’s like my words are the colors put into a sketch.
Who would you most like to collaborate with? (lets send it out to universe and make it happen!)
Can I say 2? Pharrel & Snoop Dogg!
What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?
“It’s Easy, when you learn to trust in it all.”
What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?
Allow yourself to put your work aside for a moment. I often got so consumed in needing to stay productive ALL the time, while all I needed to do to really increase my productivity was to just leave it for what it was. Go outside, into nature. Have a lovely walk in the forest , or visit the ocean for example. Do things that always made you feel happy when you were a kid! These are things that inspire me, keep my frequency super high and thus also result in more motivation / creativity and inspiration.
What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?
On the 10th of April, a new song was released called ‘Maybe Maybe’ together with Skai Lounge. In this song I am questioning reality. Questioning the things that society, school and even my upbringing has taught me.. Are those things really what I feel and believe in as well ? Or is it just conditioning? We all have our own truths & they can change at any given moment.
‘Maybe Maybe’ is that song that invites you to place a magnifying glass on your own values, thoughts & beliefs. Next to this, I will start to release another song of my upcoming EP and my EP called ‘Palmtrees In The Mist’ itself by the end of April. In my EP I take the listener on a journey through different emotions in which ‘Silver Linings’ are like the overarching theme. For me Palmtrees represent happiness, joy, warmth, The Mist represents more heavy , sad and dark emotions. So, ‘Palmtrees In The Mist’ together symbolizes to keep seeing the ‘Silver Livings’ in whatever situation life throws at us.
