Beneath the Surface with Betsie Gold.

Hello, hi, howdy friends. We are back with another stonker of a Beneath The Surface feature and this time, we had the absolute pleasure of chatting to the lovely Betsie Gold. Settle down, get snug as a bug and tuck into this tasty little interview.

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?

A friend at school played me some Bon Jovi and Taylor Swift and that was it. I was (and still am) totally obsessed with their lyrics and all I wanted to do after that was write my own songs.

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?

Honestly there are a lot of moods going on in my writing at the moment. It has been the strangest year of my life and I feel like my music is reflecting that. Honest, fun, existential, reflective pop. Is that a genre?!

What does your creative process look like?

I co-write most of my songs with my producer, Kaity Rae. We talk for a good hour or so before starting our sessions and usually something comes out of that conversation. Kaity then starts a beat/lays down some chords, puts it on loop and I start writing lyrics down. It can change direction from the initial idea but 9 times out of 10 we write about something we’ve spoken about that day.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)

Julia Michaels! She is such an incredible songwriter, I would love to work with her.

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?

I miss you.

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?

Move on! Can’t finish the verse? Start the chorus. You can always go back over stuff. You’ll find inspiration for it later on. And don’t dwell.

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?

I’ve done so much writing this year so thankfully I’ve got lots of songs to release! And as soon as there’s a clearer view of what’s going on I’m going to be rescheduling my headline show at the O2 Academy2 Islington. That first gig back after all of this is going to be SO GOOD.
