Hello and welcome to yet another glorious Beneath The Surface snippet. It’s another beautiful day in which I am joined by two more fabulous artists – Stone Fruit. Excitingly, it also happens to be the release day of their brand new enchanting single ‘Second Guess’! So much goodness wrapped up for you in this feature, so let’s get started.
What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?
L: Growing up around good music certainly helped. Curiosity is probably the first reason that I started noodling around the piano. Later, in my teens, having friends that had similar taste to mine and getting to play music with them inspired me to create music and eventually choose this as a career.
V: My parents always supported the arts and I started taking piano lessons as a child. Also, my father played the guitar, and I sang with him since I can remember. Growing up, I was lucky to have a lot of inspiring musicians in my life that graciously passed on their knowledge and offered me performing opportunities. I had so much fun on stage and these early experiences have definitely shaped me as an artist.
How would you describe the music you are currently creating?
Our music brings together different experiences and influences that we both have. We try to be unbiased and avoid getting limited by trying to stick to a specific genre but instead let our songs reflect our current state of mind, our evolution as artists and people and implement sounds that are aesthetically pleasing for us. Therefore, listeners can spot elements of soul, pop, R&B and electronic music in our releases.
What does your creative process look like?
We usually start from a small idea that either one of us have and like a lego set, we add little blocks here and there until we built the first draft of a song. We immediately record some parts and start layering; putting vocal ideas and harmonies down and even visualise how the video could be. Most often, some of those initial ideas will make it to the final recording and we think that it helps to carry a little bit of that ‘magic’ of the initial process, where are ideas are flowing organically, to the final result.
Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)
Even through this challenging year, musicians have been so resilient and there are so many artists that constantly inspire us and we would love to collaborate with. It feels almost impossible to highlight a few. With endangering to look back at this list and regretting for not including someone, here are a few names: Bruno Major, Lianne La Havas, Jacob Collier, RY X, London Grammar, Tom Misch, Jordan Rakei & more!
What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?
As humans, we are all on a unique journey and we try to navigate through relationships and existential and moral musings. For us, song-writing is a way of getting thoughts and worries off our chest but also celebrate and highlight everything that is right with the world. Music is a reflection of human behaviour and although we know that we cannot fix the world’s problems through a four-minute song, we hope that we can offer a blanket of comfort and a brief moment of constructive pondering to our listeners.
What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?
L: Listening to loads of new music & attending live performances. Meeting people, visiting new places and performing in a variety of settings. Those things have been an endless fountain of inspiration for us.
V: Thankfully dealing with a writer’s block has not been an issue so far. Even when one of us is ‘stuck’ we always build each other up. By bouncing ideas of each other we always manage to have constructive song-writing and recording sessions. That is the privilege of being part of a successful partnership.
What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?
We are currently on the final stages of creating our third EP and producing two music videos. The new EP will also include a cover of one of our favourite songs. and we are very excited to get these songs out there!
