Beneath The Surface: STAYOUTLATE

Welcome back to another bountiful Beneath The Surface session. Today I am joined by the incredible Hip hop, Rap and all round incredibly creative collective STAYOUTLATE.

We get down to it, so… lets get down to it!

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?

Scotty: Big bro was a rapper who introduced me to hip hop and had the studio set up that allowed me to try recording myself. Church choir gave me the music ear.
Tremayne: My cousin who passed away when I was 16 had a set up in my uncle’s basement. They’re two of my favorite people and that space was the first time I ever had a voice that mattered to me. Since then music has meant everything to creating the person I am and who I want to continue to grow into.
Charlie Noiir: Kinda similar to Scotty. My big brother had a poetry book, so I got into poetry. Then He started rapping. So I was trying to do the same thing. Found my own love for it because it was a great release to express all the shit I was going through. And like Scotty I was doing my thing in the youth Choir so melodies come real natural.
YoungWolf: Going to clubs and seeing how a DJ literally controls the energy and atmosphere of the entire room. Hearing how some producers could remix some of my already favourite songs making them sound better than the originals. Just the lifestyle as a whole. I like to party and entertain.

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?

Scotty IV: Lost child of Young thug and Lupe Fiasco.
Tremayne: ascending.
Charlie Noiir: Amazing.
YoungWolf: Unexpecting, Energetic, Melodic … BANGERS.

What does your creative process look like?

Scotty IV: Different every time. But hearing a beat w a lot of character or even someone else’s song puts my mind in the mode to create. I write on paper or my phone or make voice memos while driving or repeat it in my head until it’s memorized. I have bars I’ve written more than 10years ago that find themselves in songs I make today if they happen to fit.
Tremayne: honestly it’s chaotic. It’s usually a bunch of voice notes to a bunch of beat ideas that all exist on my phone and then at some point I go visit my producer Just unlimited and we spend the night trying to make sense of it all Lol.
Charlie Noiir: I do a lot of writing in my car. I’ll be driving and coming up with hook ideas or bars for future records. But if I’m in a session I always start with a melody. Once I have a melody in my head and what kind of flow I want to go with everything else comes easy
YoungWolf: Usually a pretty quick grind. If I get an idea for a new track I will usually get the core foundation of the song down in a night then slowly work on adding things and removing them throughout a week or month. Depending on the genre and vibe of the track I am trying to make.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)

Scotty IV: Pharrel.
Tremayne: Jay z. I think him and Kanye bring the best out of everyone they work with. Whether it’s creatively or in business.
Charlie Noiir: Trippie Red. T-pain. Jaden Smith. The Weekend.
YoungWolf: Producers: Kayzo, Eliminate, RL Grime, Juelz, Heimanu & Boombox Cartel. Rappers: JID, ASAP Rocky, Night Lovell, 6lack.

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?

Scotty IV: Anyone can do this if I can. Find and Chase your destiny
Tremayne: Just know that whatever experience I’m providing is a literal piece of my soul or else I probably wouldn’t share it with you.
Charlie Noiir: I only make music because I love doing it. I just hope y’all enjoy what I create and feel the energy I put into it.
YoungWolf: I love y’all and I hope you all like my creative direction no matter what genre I am putting together.

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?

Scotty IV: Watch a classic movie you’ve never seen yet. Go to a concert. Remember to be a fan of the art again.
Tremayne: I honestly never think about it. I won’t say I’m always creating to the peak of my ability, but I’m not afraid to revisit and I document everything heavy.
Charlie Noiir: I listen to music to find something that excites me. Then I take that energy and try to top whatever I heard in my own style.
YoungWolf: Listening to some of my inspirations/ favourite artists or even just taking a full week-long break from creating to get the creative juices flowing again. I try not to force creativity on myself because then ultimately I’ll make something trash.

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?

Scotty IV: Solo project coming 4th quarter! Stay tuned for the cooking show and Bhangra choreo’ Tremayne: If you’re following me on social media you know it could be any and everything.
Charlie Noiir: Bare music!! I have two projects in the stash and I’m working on a third right now. I’m in my BAG! Respectfully!
YoungWolf: So many collaborations with artists from around the world. Emotional clappers and heavy-hitting neck snappers. No, seriously I have some serious heat coming out!
