Beneath the Surface: Lorelei Marcell

Welcome welcome one and all to another delectable slice of Beneath the Surface. Today we are joined by singer-songwriter and pop artist Lorelei Marcell, off the back of her acoustic release of single ‘Flashbacks’. Get comfy, grab ya headphones and lets get stuck into it!

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?

I can’t really think of one thing that sparked my love for music. I feel like it’s always been a fundamental part of me, and I’ve always resonated with music in a really deep way. Growing up my parents were always playing music around the house, and would encourage and support my love for singing. I would spend my time after school watching YouTube videos of people performing and singing, and was always so enthralled by these artists. I have never felt passion like the one I feel for music and for my career.

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?

I would call it hopeful, dreamy, pop. It definitely has undertones of dark pop, and R&B as well.

What does your creative process look like?

I don’t necessarily have a formula when I go to write a song, but I start every project in a similar way. There’s always some feeling driving the process, whether it stemmed from reminiscing about an ex, or watching Dua Lipa perform on SNL. It comes from anywhere and everywhere. I normally start with a concept idea, then the melody and chords follow. I love collaborating and writing with other musicians too.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)

Definitely the singer Léon. I love her work and her voice so much. That would be a dream.

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?

I’ve learned a lot about myself this past year  after living on my own for the first time in a big city. I think the most honest message I could give is to let yourself be by yourself. Spending time alone can be really uncomfortable, it was for me, but it’s one of the most valuable things I’ve gotten to experience, and it’s where I’ve done most of my growing and healing.

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?

Take time off. Getting off of social media, a posting cycle, letting yourself live in the moment, and just be with friends and family, is the best possible thing.

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?

I’m releasing my first full length album this upcoming April! I’ve been working on it for so long, so I’m really grateful that it finally gets to come out. Following the album, I have a few more projects planned as well for the summer! Definitely stay tuned 🙂
