Tottenham summer signing Cristian Romero has been applauded for giving the club what they were “crying out” for and backed to bring the best out in one teammate.
Strengthening in defence was a priority issue for Tottenham in the summer. To address it, they spent a hefty sum to sign Romero from Atalanta. He has seven appearances across all competitions to his name so far since making the move.
The last of those was in a 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League at the weekend. It was the first time he has completed 90 minutes in the competition and he took his chance to impress.
Now seemingly up to speed, Romero will become Tottenham’s main man at the back for various reasons.
He has now received praise from a former Spurs player, who noticed his ability on the ball and how it will make a major difference to one man in particular.
“Romero was brilliant at the weekend,” Paul Robinson told Football Insider.
“Spurs have been crying out for a world-class centre-half for a long time now and he is one. [Davinson] Sanchez and [Eric] Dier started the season well but they are not a pairing that would get in any other top eight Premier League side.
“Romero has looked a class above when he’s played. His range of passing is phenomenal.
“Teams play a high press now and try to win the ball high up the field. With Romero’s range of passing and Tottenham’s pace in the final third, Tottenham can play evade that press with one ball.
“Son [Heung-min] is going to benefit from that consistently because he makes great runs. That kind of pass will lead to a lot of goals once the two of them develop an understanding.”
Son is already Tottenham’s leading goalscorer this season with three. Should he connect more with Romero, despite them playing at opposite ends of the pitch, he could well enjoy another prolific campaign.
Last term was his best for Spurs in terms of goalscoring as he found the back of the net 22 times. It was the third time in his career he has passed the 20-goal barrier.
Romero could help him aim for similar territory again, although the Argentine’s main priority will remain keeping goals out at the other end.
In the games he has started so far, they have only kept one clean sheet. But after winning the award for Serie A’s best defender last season, he should help them address those concerns too in time.
One Tottenham man on downward spiral
While big things are predicted for Romero this season, plus the benefits he could provide for other teammates, not all in Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad are on an upwards trajectory.
A few players have suffered from a loss of form in recent weeks amid Tottenham’s mixed results.
For one of those, the struggles have backdated a while further. Dele Alli has not been himself for a couple of seasons now and continues to face an uncertain future.
As such, one pundit has offered him a wake-up call while explaining his downturn in fortunes…
