UCL icon explains why Liverpool being ‘boring’ is good for Van Dijk; says fans can ‘sleep easy for years’

Clarence Seedorf has explained why Liverpool being ‘boring’ is good for Virgil van Dijk, while he also believes their supporters can ‘sleep easy’ with the Dutchman in defence.

Liverpool have won plenty of trophies with Van Dijk in the team, including the 2019 Champions League and the Premier League title the following season. The 46-time Netherlands international has got back to his best after suffering an ACL injury in October 2020.

Jurgen Klopp has given Van Dijk 45 appearances already this term. He continues to be a juggernaut at the back, while also improving those around him.

Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate are vying for the centre-half position alongside Van Dijk.

Liverpool won the Carabao Cup in February and could yet make it a famous quadruple. They are competing with Manchester City for the league title.

FA Cup and Champions League glory are also available to Klopp’s men in the final few weeks of an incredible campaign.

Seedorf, who won the UCL five times during an illustrious playing career, has now given his verdict on Van Dijk.

During an interview with Dutch outlet NRC, the former midfielder spoke about his recent visit to Liverpool with Amazon Prime.

Liverpool labelled ‘boring’ – but this suits Virgil van Dijk

He called the city of Liverpool ‘boring’, although this apparently suits Van Dijk.

“The captain of Orange is mainly focused on winning prizes with his club Liverpool,” Seedorf said. “The city of Liverpool is very suitable for that.

“In my opinion, it is a boring city, without many temptations that come your way unwisely.

“The calmness he exudes gives Klopp’s team a lot of confidence to put high pressure, as it did against Villarreal the whole match on Wednesday.

“Many people talk about his physical strength and speed, but how Van Dijk defused most dangerous situations has everything to do with his game insight and also with his ability to quickly choose the best solution.

“That is often not without risk, but it is inevitable at the highest level. His fellow players praise him; the fans of Liverpool sleep easy for years thanks to their leader of the rearguard.

“With Van Dijk, Dutch football is more than well-represented in Liverpool.”

Van Dijk is likely to start Liverpool’s Premier League match this weekend. They face Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday lunchtime.
