Tottenham have reportedly become the “great favourite” to sign Luka Modric from Real Madrid after more details emerged of their potential offer to the midfielder.
Modric has proven himself as one of the best players in the world since leaving Tottenham for Madrid in 2012. He has won 16 trophies with the Spanish giants and won the Ballon d’Or in 2018.
Now 35, he remains at the top of his game. However, there are doubts about his future in Madrid.
His contract at the Bernabeu is due to expire at the end of this season. So far, there has been little progress over a renewal. Therefore, he can speak to other clubs from January.
Reports emerged last week suggesting that Modric could complete a sensational return to Tottenham. Jose Mourinho managed to lure Gareth Bale back from Madrid in the summer, and Modric could follow suit.
There were suggestions that Mourinho – who was in charge of Real when they signed Modric – had already contacted the playmaker.
Now, Todofichajes have taken those claims further. The Spanish website explains that Mourinho is “determined” to reunite with Modric.
It is claimed that Mourinho wants Tottenham to offer Modric a contract lasting two years, with wages similar to those he currently earns in Madrid.
Modric remembers Tottenham fondly
Modric, for his part, was “very happy” at Spurs before and apparently “would not rule out” returning to the English capital.
However, the Croatian is willing to sign up again with Madrid if they offer him a one-year extension. Should that not occur, though, Tottenham could be a contender for his signature.
The fact that they could be prepared to offer a contract twice as long as the one Madrid could put on the table may leave Modric with an interesting decision.
Modric previously made 159 appearances for Tottenham in a four-year spell, scoring 17 goals.
