Tottenham have already “abandoned” their efforts to hand Jan Vertonghen a new contract and the defender is “very close” to signing for Real Betis, according to reports.
The Belgian international is one of Spurs‘ longest-serving players having signed from Ajax in 2012 but he is entering the final year of his latest contract in north London.
Unlike with fellow centre-back Toby Alderweireld – who was in the same predicament until December – however, there has been no sign of Tottenham looking to negotiate a new deal with Vertonghen.
Indeed, according to Todofichajes, Spurs have already called off attempts to extend the centre-back’s contract and are bracing for his exit.
Previous reports linked Inter Milan with a move for Vertonghen in what would be their second raid on Tottenham in a matter of months, after Christian Eriksen’s departure to the Serie A side.
Betis have also been linked with a move and Todofichajes claims that it is the LaLiga side who are close to reaching an agreement with Spurs and Vertonghen.
The player wants a two-year contract with a salary worth €3.5million per year, demands that Betis are happy to meet.
Revamping the defence has reportedly become a top priority for Spurs boss Jose Mourinho since his arrival to the role in November.
There are uncertainties surrounding the futures of Serge Aurier and Juan Foyth, while Kyle Walker-Peters’ permanent exit to Southampton is also reportedly being considered.
In return, Tottenham have been linked with RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano.
Further forward, Mourinho has reportedly given Tottenham the green light to pursue a deal for Fenerbahce striker Vedat Muriqi.
