Pink Floyd At Pompeii MCMLXXII – Blu-ray, DVD, 2CD, 2LP and cinema screenings announced!

Following their acquisition of the Pink Floyd catalogue, Sony Music have today announced an excellent first release: Pink Floyd at Pompeii MCMLXXII – a newly restored version of the classic Live At Pompeii, with a superb new audio mix by Steven Wilson. It will mark the first time the music will be officially available on vinyl. Before the home release, the iconic performance will return to the cinema screen. This new version of the groundbreaking 1972 film directed by Adrian Maben will, thanks to Trafalgar Releasing and Sony Music Vision, be in selected cinemas and IMAX worldwide from April 24th and tickets will be on sale
from March 5th at PinkFloyd.film (https://www.pinkfloyd.film) and of course, from participating cinemas directly. Digitally re-mastered in 4K from the original 35mm footage, with enhanced audio newly mixed by Steven Wilson, the upcoming theatrical release presents the definitive version of this pioneering film. Pink Floyd at Pompeii MCMLXXII is accompanied by the live album, set for release by Legacy Recordings, the catalogue division of Sony Music, on double CD, Digital Audio (streaming, Blu-ray and DVD), and for the very first time in Dolby Atmos and on double vinyl, from May 2nd. Presenting a first look at the newly restored footage and audio, a taster clip of Echoes has been released today. Obviously, YouTube has limitations, and the full releases should look and sound even better! The film has been meticulously hand restored, frame-by-frame, from the original 35mm cut negative – discovered in five dubiously labelled cans within Pink Floyd’s own archives. This momentous breakthrough unearthed the very film that rolled through the cameras during those sweltering days amidst the ruins of Pompeii over 50 years ago. Led by Lana Topham, Director of Restoration for Pink Floyd, the team’s mission was to preserve the integrity and beauty of the original picture. The film was scanned in 4K using advanced techniques to ensure the finest, sharpest detail. Colours were enhanced, and every frame was meticulously reviewed and repaired, maintaining a natural and vivid appearance with minimal grain adjustments. Lana: “Since 1994, I have searched for the elusive film rushes of Pink Floyd At Pompeii, so the recent discovery of the 1972 original 35mm cut negative was a very special moment. The newly restored version presents the first full 90-minute cut, combining the 60-minute source edit of the performance with the additional Abbey Road Studios documentary segments filmed shortly after.” The film also features stunning sound quality with a new theatrical and home entertainment mix by Steven Wilson in 5.1 and Dolby Atmos that enhances the film’s depth and clarity, preserving the authenticity and spirit of the original 1972 release. Wilson’s aim was to remain faithful to how the band would have sounded on those scorching hot days in 1971: “Ever since my dad brainwashed me as a kid by playing The Dark Side of the Moon on repeat, Pink Floyd has been my favourite band. They are my “Beatles”, deeply ingrained in my musical DNA. I first saw Pompeii from a grainy print at a local cinema. It made an incredible impression on me with its untethered and exploratory rock music made by four musicians that seemed to epitomise the notion of intellectual cool. David Gilmour, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets, Roger Waters in RSD 2025!

To celebrate Record Store Day 2025 (Saturday, April 12th), there are three, very tempting, limited edition releases coming that will be of interest to Pink Floyd fans. Firstly, Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets share an incredible live version of their interpretation of Echoes. Propelled by Nick Mason’s drumming, this recording captures the band with Gary Kemp, Guy Pratt, Dom Beken and Lee Harris at the peak of their powers. The performance was recorded on August 1st, 2024 at the Centennial Hall in Frankfurt, Germany by Steve Carr. Echoes Live was mixed by Steven Wilson with consultation and assistance from Dom Beken. This 12″ was half-speed mastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road and uniquely plays from the inside-out for the ultimate sound quality. The B-side includes an exclusive etched design. Secondly, there’s a special clear vinyl 12″ of Between Two Points by David Gilmour with Romany Gilmour, from the album Luck and Strange. The four-track, vinyl-only release will feature an exclusive live version (coupled with Vita Brevis) from the Royal Albert Hall plus a new remix by Rob Gentry. Finally, in advance of his super deluxe box set, Roger Waters releases a special version of The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux Live. Pressed on limited-edition neon pink vinyl and recorded during two sold-out shows at the London Palladium in October 2023, this album captures the only live performance of Roger’s reimagined version of Pink Floyd’s seminal album. As with the other RSD 2025 releases, these are all limited editions: often the RSD releases are pressed up as just a few thousand or so worldwide, available to snap up on the day. Just announced and available to pre-order is a limited edition (just 3000 are being made) Super Deluxe Boxset of The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux, which was released in October 2023 in a variety of vinyl editions, along with a CD version. This new edition, which comes with some interesting additions to the original album, is released on March 14th, 2025. Many of you will recall that Roger performed a couple of nights at London’s legendary Palladium, and the live rendition of the Redux Dark Side is included in the box set. The end of the year – Pink Floyd related activities wrap-up

With the end of the year looming, it’s a good time to look back at what 2024 gave us. There’s been a lot of different releases that we’ve all experienced over the months, and it is interesting to look back at what there’s been in a busy year. In March there was the Mark Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes release of Going Home (Theme From Local Hero), which included David Gilmour amongst around 60 musicians. April saw the lovely looking crystal clear vinyl of The Dark Side Of The Moon, with UV artwork. Later that month, Roger Waters released a picture disc of his Redux version of TDSOTM as part of Record Store Day. May brought us the Animals 2018 Remix on Blu-ray and on digital platforms, bringing the 1977 album to life in multi channel gloriousness. This was presented with new artwork from the launch of the Animals 2018 remix, showing how Battersea Power Station is used these days for such promotions. June saw the start of the 35-date Set The Controls tour from Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets, thrilling audiences in the UK and Europe, and getting better and better as a band. Let’s hope that there’s more next year! The DVD, Blu-ray and digital release of Have You Got It Yet? The Story Of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd was released in July, following the 2023 cinema screenings. Of course, in September, we saw the release of the hotly anticipated Luck And Strange from David Gilmour, which was accompanied from later that month with live shows in Brighton and London, England, Rome, Italy, Los Angeles and New York, USA. Dates in Rome were filmed with the aim to release at some point, and once we have details of that, we’ll let you know! David also contributed a guitar solo for Ice-T’s band Body Count on their cover version of Comfortably Numb (a very unexpected collaboration!). David’s team have also edited together footage from each city of the tour to construct a live version of The Piper’s Call, released as a pre-Christmas treat. Finally, to conclude the year, there’s been another release of a bunch of live Pink Floyd concerts to be found on platforms such as Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/artist/0k17h0D3J5VfsdmQ1iZtE9?si=jRkN8zT1TqWovrf0sObizw) for a limited period. There’s thirteen gigs in total, all from 1974, and definitely worth checking out…

Comparing vinyl editions of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon

Something a little different today as we count down the hours until David Gilmour’s Royal Albert Hall shows begin, tomorrow evening. The Dark Side Of The Moon is rightly considered an audiophile classic, and has been used over the last fifty-odd years as a showcase of someone’s hifi, or indeed, as a perfect test record in equipment stores for prospective buyers of turntables and so on. The following video goes into incredible detail into the vinyl version of The Dark Side Of The Moon, and includes plenty of background into how the finished recording made it onto vinyl. It also compares various editions of the album, to try and determine (from the presenter’s perspective, of course) which are the copies to search out for the highest quality audio. As with all audio comparisons, it is subjective, and different equipment does affect the sound one hears. The most important thing is for people to enjoy the music, irrespective of the format, but nevertheless it is a fascinating look at how records are made, showing the process – particularly, how it was done in the early to mid 1970s…

Limited edition LP & CD deluxe formats for David Gilmour’s Luck and Strange album revealed

The details for the limited edition deluxe formats for David Gilmour’s Luck and Strange album, which is released on September 6th 2024, have been revealed and will include bonus tracks and a very special hardback book by Thames & Hudson featuring exclusive photographs taken by Polly Samson during the recording of the album. The deluxe editions will be limited to one run only. Up to now, there’s just been a blurry hint at the editions over at David’s official store, but now full details have been revealed. The deluxe editions come in two versions: vinyl or CD, depending on which format you prefer for the standard audio elements. Nick Mason’s solo albums available individually on CD and vinyl LP next month

To be released on June 7th, 2024 are all three of Nick Mason’s solo albums as individual LPs and CDs for the first time since their original release. In August 2018, the limited edition Unattended Luggage box set gathered the three album together but now you can get them separately. For those who need reminding, Fictitious Sports was Nick’s debut solo album from 1981, which included collaborations with a variety of different musicians including Robert Wyatt and Carla Bley. 1985’s Profiles saw him hook up with 10cc guitarist Rick Fenn, and is a mainly instrumental album except for tracks Lie for a Lie which features vocals from Maggie Reilly and Floyd bandmate David Gilmour. and Israel, sung by UFO keyboardist Danny Peyronel. Finally, there’s White of the Eye, another collaboration with Rick Fenn, a soundtrack for the British thriller movie of the same name. Originally released on January 1st 1987 on Harvest in the UK, and Columbia in the US, to coincide with the film’s release, the 2018 saw it appear on CD for the first time. ORDERING INFORMATION:

Roger Waters – Dark Side Redux picture disc in 2024 Record Store Day

Just revealed is the list of exclusives that will be made available as part of the 2024 Record Store Day, which is being held on 20th April at all participating, independent stockists. Amongst the huge array of special editions, all of which are produced in varying degrees of limited numbers, is one for the Roger Waters collectors out there. As you will be aware, last year he released his Redux of The Dark Side Of The Moon, which – on vinyl – was issued in nine different versions, from standard black to almost any colour you like. Nine always felt an odd number (literally) for this release, and a tenth edition has just been revealed. On the Record Store Day list, they have included a limited edition 1LP picture disc of the album that will be individually numbered in a die-cut sleeve. There will be 3000 copies worldwide, so actually in greater numbers than some of the different colour variants of the album, which were all 2LP sets. We suspect they’ve been able to squeeze the album (without the additional track that came with the vinyl versions last year) onto a single LP, but obviously we don’t know at this stage if there has been any editing to help it fit. A reminder that it will ONLY be these stores participating; the stores themselves can’t sell it online – the record will become available for customers coming through the door of the store from the morning of the 20th (and not before), in limited quantities – first come, first served, and only one copy per customer. After RSD, if copies remain, the retailers may put them for sale online (and of course, there’ll also be copies on eBay inevitably…).
