A recently opened exhibition of Hipgnosis pictures and artwork in Germany has been attracting a lot of interest from visitors, along with local media. Co-curator Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell was in touch with us, to provide some more detail on this for you all. Po said: “The Hipgnosis Exhibition ‘Breathe’ opened on Sunday 21st January to an enthusiastic crowd of 400 people. The exhibition runs over 3 floors of this wonderful gallery and contains 150 Hipgnosis pictures, curated by myself and John Colton of the Browse Gallery, Berlin. There has been great press and TV coverage. “The initial rooms celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon and all the artwork that has been designed by Hipgnosis or Storm Studios over the past fifty years related to that celebrated album. The Ludwig Schloss Gallery is in Oberhausen, 30 minutes by car from the centre of Dusseldorf. Some hopefully great news for those of you in or near Germany – Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets have expanded their summer tour this year with a performance at the Herzberg Festival at Breitenbach am Herzberg, Germany (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2024/july-28th-herzberg-festival-breitenbach-am-herzberg-ge.html). It’s quite a large festival, running since 1968 and this year, runs from 25th – 28th July, with Nick and the gang appearing on the final day – 28th July (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2024/july-28th-herzberg-festival-breitenbach-am-herzberg-ge.html). Roger Waters is releasing The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/roger-waters-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-redux-album-annou.html), his new recording of Pink Floyd’s 1973 classic album, he has just announced a live performance of the album to take place in London. UPDATE: now two shows! The concert premiere of his new recording will take place at the London Palladium on October 8th, two days after the album’s release on October 6th. Waters said that “we’re going to do it live at the London Palladium, in October. We look forward to that⦠hopefully performing it live on other occasions in the future.” Joining Waters on stage will be a number of the musicians who worked with him on the new recording, including Gus Seyffert (bass), Joey Waronker(drums), Jonathan Wilson (guitars), Johnny Shepherd (organ), Via Mardot (theremin), Azniv Korkejian (vocals), Gabe Noel (strings), Jon Carin (keyboards) and Robert Walter (piano). The show has been designed by Waters’ long time Creative Director Sean Evans. Some great news has been announced this afternoon, following some online rumours and speculation – Richard Wrightâs debut solo album, Wet Dream, is to be reissued on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1978 – this time in deep blue transparent marbled vinyl. It will also be available on streaming platforms for the first time ever including a new Dolby Atmos mix, on CD and on blu-ray which includes a 5.1 mix and never before released personal images and videos from around this period of his life. To be released on July 28th – the date that would have been his 80th birthday – it will initially be made available on CD and all streaming platforms, with the vinyl and blu-ray editions of the record being released on September 29th. Remixed by Steven Wilson, this reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard’s children and managers of his estate. As per the original release, the bi-fold sleeve folds out to extend the image and features the same vibrant colour palette. This time, the unidentified person in bright red shorts is swimming within deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool and the image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, referencing the nautical theme of the record. The image was taken by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, which is where the album was written and the graphic design is by Carl Glover. The original artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson and photographed by Audrey Powell for Hipgnosis and features in the vinyl booklet. Upon rediscovering this record, it becomes hugely apparent how much of Richard’s DNA runs through Pink Floyd. His distinct rhythm patterns, song structure and style of play exudes throughout, shining a light on his unique talent and influence on modern music. When originally released, post Pink Floyd’s Animals (1977) and shortly before 1979’s The Wall, Wet Dream was largely under-appreciated. Steven Wilson’s mix is designed to give new life to the record demonstrating Wright’s brilliance. Richard wrote and produced the whole album himself and it was one of only three albums he released outside of Pink Floyd, the others being Broken China, from 1996, and Identity, released in 1983 under the guise of Zee, a duet with Dave Harris from Fashion. The Blu-ray edition of Wet Dream includes the Dolby Atmos mIx, a 5.1 surround mix (DTS-HD Master Audio 96/24), the new stereo mix in Hi-Res Audio (96/24), and exclusive personal videos along with a photo gallery. It’s housed in a book format with four collectable postcards and an 8-page booklet. UPDATE: due to feedback on the contents of the Blu-ray, it has been expanded to also include a flat transfer of the original pre-master of the 1978 stereo mix, taken from the analogue reels, as well as Steven Wilson’s 2023 instrumental stereo mixes of the four vocal tracks on the album being added. Announced this lunchtime: Toronto has been confirmed as the seventh location to host The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains, the magnificent and critically acclaimed major retrospective of Pink Floyd, their music and the impact the band had on art and culture. Canada sees the exhibition remain on its shores having recently staged it in Montreal. Following its hugely successful debut at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum in 2017, which saw over 400,000 people attend, the exhibition has subsequently traveled to Italy, Germany, Spain and the United States attracting well over 500,000 people and will now take residency in the cultural hub of Toronto. The Exhibition opens on Friday, June 16th, 2023, and is being held at the Better Living Centre at Exhibition Place in the city. Tickets go on sale Friday, May 26th at 10am EST. The Better Living Centre should be a good venue for the immersive experiential journey through Pink Floyd’s world. The band played in Toronto a number of times, as have the individual members of the band on their solo tours. Wish You Were Here – A Peopleâs History of Pink Floyd is the title of a new book about the Floyd, although author Richard Houghton readily admits that the book isn’t entirely new, as it’s an update of an earlier work from 2017. The book tells the story of Pink Floyd through more than 500 eyewitness accounts, mixing concert memories with other encounters with the band. As well as stories from the beginnings of the band’s career and accounts of arena shows, there are a number of more intimate encounters. One example is the story of Norman Whitehall, who travelled with a friend to Bridgend in Wales to see Pink Floyd at the tiny Kee Club in March 1969, only to be told that they couldn’t get in because it was a members-only club. A disconsolate Norman wandered the streets with his friend until they bumped into the band themselves, who took pity on them and escorted them into the club and through to their dressing room, where band and fans shared a joint. Richard said: “I had a book entitled Pink Floyd – I Was There published in paperback, but that book has been out of print for a few years. I’ve managed to acquire the rights to the book and decided to republish it through my own company, Spenwood Books, and give the material in the book the treatment it deserves. The new book is coming out in hardback in a larger format, with full colour photos on high quality paper. I’ve also collected over 100 new accounts of seeing the Floyd live that weren’t in the original book. This includes several tales from the period when Syd was in the band. So it’s a fascinating look back at Pink Floyd as it’s their history told in the words of fans, and it provides a very different take on a story that’s been told many times before.
