Pink Floyd releasing The Dark Side Of The Moon Crystal Clear 2LP Collector’s Edition

A date for the diary for (we suspect) a lot of you: on April 19th, Pink Floyd will be releasing a Collector’s Edition of The Dark Side Of The Moon on crystal clear vinyl (https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0CTHWT8YN/braindamage-21). This will be a 2 x 180g single sided LP set, featuring UV artwork print on the non-groove side (so side 1 on the first record, and side 2 on the second). From the initial pictures of it, and from seeing other UV releases, it promises to be a wonderful looking addition to the collection! The technology is fairly new, and from the limited examples from other artists already released, it gives great looking results. This new edition of The Dark Side Of The Moon features the prism spectrum seen through the playable side of the vinyl whilst maintaining the best quality sound. Packaged in a slipcased gatefold sleeve, it also comes with an exclusive poster. It’s great to see them use this pioneering UV printing process. The images are printed with a high end UV printer, using UV-LED light to dry the permanent ink on the side without audio on which the image is printed. This combination of one-sided audio and the UV print (on the side without audio) combines the best of both worlds: great audio and a beautiful image to enjoy. You can order this special edition through the following links, whilst helping this site with its ongoing running costs, at no additional cost to you, as we participate in the Amazon affiliate programme. Richard Wright’s 80th birthday marked by superb Wet Dream remix

Today would have been the much-missed, and much-loved, Richard Wright’s 80th birthday. Today sees new mixes by Steven Wilson of Richard’s debut solo album, Wet Dream, available on CD and all streaming platforms, with a deep blue transparent marbled vinyl and blu-ray edition of the album being released on September 29th. The vinyl reissue sees it on the format for the first time since its original release in 1978. It is on streaming platforms for the first time ever including a new Dolby Atmos mix, and the Blu-ray edition of Wet Dream includes the Dolby Atmos mIx, a 5.1 surround mix (DTS-HD Master Audio 96/24), the new stereo mix in Hi-Res Audio (96/24), and exclusive personal images and videos from around this period of his life. It’s housed in a book format with four collectable postcards and an 8-page booklet. Since the initial announcement, the Blu-ray has been expanded to also include a flat transfer of the original pre-master of the 1978 stereo mix, taken from the analogue reels, as well as Steven Wilson’s 2023 instrumental stereo mixes of the four vocal tracks on the album being added. This reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard’s children and managers of his estate. As per the original release, the bi-fold sleeve folds out to extend the image and features the same vibrant colour palette. This time, the unidentified person in bright red shorts is swimming within deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool and the image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, referencing the nautical theme of the record. The image was taken by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, which is where the album was written and the graphic design is by Carl Glover. The original artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson and photographed by Audrey Powell for Hipgnosis and features in the vinyl booklet. Upon rediscovering this record (broadly speaking, quite overlooked or unknown by some Pink Floyd fans), it becomes hugely apparent how much of Richard’s DNA runs through Floyd. His distinct rhythm patterns, song structure and style of play exudes throughout, shining a light on his unique talent and influence on modern music. Yesterday evening, at the Dolby Listening Room in Soho, London, family (most of Richard’s were there), friends, and selected media were treated to a pair of playback sessions – in the pitch black – which straddled a Q&A session with Steven Wilson, hosted by Guy Pratt. First, the playback: this was the Atmos mix which is coming in September on the Blu-ray of the album, and simply put, it sounded absolutely superb. The clarity, power, and sheer musical and emotional impact made for a truly memorable night. The Q&A with Steven led to some fascinating insights into the process of finding the original master tapes (which were held at Universal in London), then getting them “baked” by Damon Iddins at Astoria (David Gilmour’s houseboat studio), before Steven could take the separate 24-track recordings and create the remix, which gives us an album which has never sounded as good as this! Here’s a glimpse at the Q&A, and the message to the attendees on a screen in the Ray Dolby Lounge (a separate screen was showing home video footage of Richard, which should be on the Blu-ray when that is released). Finally, if you’ve yet to hear it, here’s a taster of the album: ORDERING INFORMATION:

Richard Wright ‘Wet Dream’ reissue with Steven Wilson remix release details

Some great news has been announced this afternoon, following some online rumours and speculation – Richard Wright’s debut solo album, Wet Dream, is to be reissued on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1978 – this time in deep blue transparent marbled vinyl. It will also be available on streaming platforms for the first time ever including a new Dolby Atmos mix, on CD and on blu-ray which includes a 5.1 mix and never before released personal images and videos from around this period of his life. To be released on July 28th – the date that would have been his 80th birthday – it will initially be made available on CD and all streaming platforms, with the vinyl and blu-ray editions of the record being released on September 29th. Remixed by Steven Wilson, this reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard’s children and managers of his estate. Upon rediscovering this record, it becomes hugely apparent how much of Richard’s DNA runs through Pink Floyd. His distinct rhythm patterns, song structure and style of play exudes throughout, shining a light on his unique talent and influence on modern music. When originally released, post Pink Floyd’s Animals (1977) and shortly before 1979’s The Wall, Wet Dream was largely under-appreciated. Steven Wilson’s mix is designed to give new life to the record demonstrating Wright’s brilliance. Richard wrote and produced the whole album himself and it was one of only three albums he released outside of Pink Floyd, the others being Broken China, from 1996, and Identity, released in 1983 under the guise of Zee, a duet with Dave Harris from Fashion. The Blu-ray edition of Wet Dream includes the Dolby Atmos mIx, a 5.1 surround mix (DTS-HD Master Audio 96/24), the new stereo mix in Hi-Res Audio (96/24), and exclusive personal videos along with a photo gallery. It’s housed in a book format with collectable postcards and an 8-page booklet. Here’s a first taste of the album: ORDERING INFORMATION:

Now announced: Pink Floyd’s Animals 2018 Remix on multiple formats!

Something that we know probably most – if not all – of you have been eagerly awaiting, has just been announced this afternoon. Pink Floyd’s Animals 2018 Remix is being released on CD, LP (with gatefold artwork), Blu-ray, and SACD on September 16th, and on October 7th, in Deluxe Gatefold format. The Deluxe Gatefold version includes the LP, CD, audio Blu-ray, audio DVD and a 32-page book. The Blu-ray and DVD audio include the 2018 remix in Stereo, 5.1 Surround (both by James Guthrie) and the original 1977 Stereo mix. The 32-page booklet features rarely seen behind the scenes photographs of the original album sleeve shoot along with live images and memorabilia. The album’s iconic cover shows an inflatable pig (known as Algie) floating between two chimneys of London’s Battersea Power Station, conceived by Roger Waters, and designed by long-time collaborator Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis Studios. For this new release, the artwork has been re-designed for the modern era by Storm’s Hipgnosis partner Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell. Taking new shots of the building as it appeared during the recent conversion work, Po experimented with new angles and produce some striking new takes on the classic original. Po elaborates: “With the original 1977 album cover being such an iconic piece of stand-alone art, I had the chance to update it, which was a rather daunting task, but Hipgnosis took the opportunity to re-photograph the image to reflect a changing world, and by using modern digital colouring techniques I kept Pink Floyd’s rather bleak message of moral decay using the Orwellian themes of animals, the pig Algie, faithful to the message of the album.” The main image of the train tracks and shed, already familiar to many of you following Roger Waters’ social media posts about it, features on most of the formats, but there’s a strikingly different image – a more dark, moody and colourful look at Battersea Power Station at night – used for the Blu-ray cover. The full list of format details are below (click Read More to see them), and here are the direct links available so far to place your orders (which help us with Brain Damage’s ongoing running costs, without costing anything further to you!). If the store link for the format you want isn’t “clickable”, that’s because they haven’t got the item listing live yet. Please keep trying! Gerald Scarfe shows his Art Of Pink Floyd The Wall book to Brain Damage visitors!

Following a slight delay to its originally announced publication date, The Art Of Pink Floyd The Wall is now available and shipping to those who have already ordered it. This is a beautiful new, 288-page hardback book, in landscape format housed within a cardboard sleeve (shown to the right) that reveals a huge amount of rare and previously unseen sketches, paintings and more, created by Gerald Scarfe principally for The Wall project, but also includes earlier materials, for Wish You Were Here and Animals, for example. It is an expensive book, but the work involved bringing together the breadth of material within, and the quality of its presentation, help to justify the price tag – and it is completely different to any previous books on Scarfe’s artwork for the Floyd. From the first ideas for The Wall, through to the finished images that we are all familiar with, there’s such a wealth of material that steadily progresses through the album/film/concert staging, that you can quickly feel quite overwhelmed with the amount that Scarfe clearly created during his time on this project. And, for the first time, an incredible amount of that work has been revealed. Our review of The Art Of Pink Floyd The Wall (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/gerald-scarfe-the-art-of-pink-floyd-the-wall-hardback-book.html) is worth checking out if you are interested in the book. However much you think you know The Wall, and Scarfe’s artwork for it (and earlier Pink Floyd projects), this book will reveal far more than you could imagine. One wonders if there was anything left in his archive that wasn’t included? That’s not a criticism, but a note of thanks for bringing in so many early sketches and ideas to sit alongside finished designs and images. This is a truly incredible book that will appeal equally to Pink Floyd fans, to Scarfe enthusiasts, and to those interested in production design for film and concert stage. This really is an exemplary collection of Scarfe’s work for the band, and the image reproduction throughout is top notch. Yes, it has a hefty price tag, but putting together a book like this was never going to be a quick and cheap affair. Some retailers are offering discounts thus reducing the price a little. As a special exclusive treat, Gerald had this video shot especially for Brain Damage, so you get a feel for what the book includes, and the format it comes in. Thanks Gerald! For those who would like to add this incredible book to their Floydian bookshelves, you can order it through the following links. Ordering through our links also helps with BD’s ongoing running costs, and we really appreciate it: Amazon UK (https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1408714329/braindamage-21), Amazon France (https://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/1408714329/braindamageon-21), Amazon Germany (https://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/1408714329/braindamage0f-21), Amazon Spain (https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/1408714329/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 tag=braidama01-21 linkCode=as2 camp=3626 creative=24822 creativeASIN=1408714329) and Amazon Italy (https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/1408714329/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3370 creative=24114 creativeASIN=1408714329 1 linkCode=as2 tag=bradamonl-21). Some stores might not yet have the book available to order (at time of writing this, Amazon.com and Canada still don’t list the book) so please keep checking back as it should be available from all stores, soon. If your chosen store doesn’t stock it, try other Amazon stores as they will ship books worldwide. There is another option if you can wait until 3rd November 2022 – a paperback version of the book is due for publication then. You can order it now from UK retailer WH Smith (https://www.whsmith.co.uk/products/the-art-of-pink-floyd-the-wall/gerald-scarfe/paperback/9781408714331.html), and we’ll also add links for Amazon stores once they list this correctly. Amazon’s current listings show a paperback version as currently available, BUT that’s an error, as it is an older book and not The Art Of Pink Floyd The Wall!
