Nick Mason featured in German Drums & Percussion Magazine

Our friend Michael Nickel has been in touch with some information about a newly published issue of a German language magazine, which should be of interest to visitors to Brain Damage. The July/August 2023 issue of Drums & Percussion (What Moves Drummers) Magazine (issue 4 of 2023) (https://www.sticks.de/heftinhalt-artikeldetail?tx_news_pi1%5BactbackPid%5D=343&tx_news_pi1%5Baction%5D=detail&tx_news_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=News&tx_news_pi1%5Bnews%5D=13517&cHash=e12a9539a6bedafa8a852ee1c39116e9) has an eye catching cover featuring a very happy looking Nick Mason, in the midst of one of his Saucerful Of Secrets concerts. The cover story – “Time travel to the beginnings of Pink Floyd” – with Nick interviewed, is accompanied by a potted history of the band. On their website, they give an extract from the magazine feature: “With his new band Saucerful Of Secrets, the drummer who made music history with Pink Floyd is going way back in time. Here, Nick Mason tells us how this special time travel feels. However, the new band is not the only thing on the mind of the now 79-year-old… “This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the über-album The Dark Side of the Moon, and then there’s also a traveling exhibition about Pink Floyd called Their Mortal Remains – not to mention that Pink Floyd, by the way, has even released a new song after decades of abstinence in protest against the war in Ukraine. More than one topic for a conversation with a legend of our guild. “Nick, at the Roundhouse in London you played in 1966 and 2019 with at least partly the same songs. Where were the similarities and differences between then and now? Nick: “That was quite interesting. Of course there were similarities, but also differences: The main ones were on the technical side, because in 1966, for example, there was no stage, but an old trailer and a very small PA or very little electronics. So the whole thing was pretty quiet [laughs]. I mean, at the end of the evening the PA would have been completely destroyed. But musically it was pretty similar in parts, which I found very pleasant.” Our thanks to Michael for the information. The magazine can be purchased online through Sticks.de (https://www.sticks.de/heftinhalt-artikeldetail?tx_news_pi1%5BactbackPid%5D=343&tx_news_pi1%5Baction%5D=detail&tx_news_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=News&tx_news_pi1%5Bnews%5D=13517&cHash=e12a9539a6bedafa8a852ee1c39116e9).

Hipgnosis Studio: Pink Floyd And Beyond opens tonight in Italy

Opening this evening at the Palazzo Mezzacapo, in Maiori, Salerno, Italy, is a new exhibition – Hipgnosis Studio: Pink Floyd And Beyond. The exhibition runs until 27th August celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side Of The Moon. On display will be 55 large-format works, from the band’s most iconic covers to their preparatory works and out-takes, and will tell the story of the collaboration between the Hipgnosis design studio and Pink Floyd. In an interview for the opening of the exhibition, Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell said: “I met Pink Floyd at Abbey Road studios to listen to the recordings of the new album and talk about the cover. The keyboardist, Richard Wright, asked us not to do one of our usual surrealist works, but something simpler. A week later, while reading an American physics magazine, Storm noticed a prism which, when struck by a beam of light, created a rainbow. It’s perfect, he said. We didn’t have computers and software, so I took some crayons and made a drawing. When we showed it to Pink Floyd they chose it straight away”. Po, who is a designer, photographer and director, but above all co-founder with Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis, said that the exhibition in Maiori gave “an emotional contrast between the Baroque palace and my works. I would never have thought that half a century later that prism would have been an icon: on the street you see people wearing t-shirts with that logo, it’s the first thing that struck me even when I arrived in Naples. Of course the fact that Pink Floyd sold 50 million copies of that album didn’t hurt.” The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday between 6pm – 9pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 7.30pm – 11.30pm. Lee Harris interviewed re: Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets

A new podcast has started up, called Fingal’s Cave, which is aimed at “all true Pink Floyd fans” with a focus
on more in-depth subjects related to the band. As Ian Priston, co-host with Nils Zehnpfennig, alludes to in the first episode, it’s not really a podcast aimed at the Floyd novice! In the second episode, Nils meets Lee Harris, co-founder and guitarist with Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets. As the podcast description neatly summarises, “Lee recalls being a fan of Pink Floyd from an early age, trips to Kensington and Camden markets in London to buy bootlegs and his memories of Floyd Xmas Mix ’93. Other highlights of the hour include, the story of how the Saucers were formed, Roger Waters’ performance in New York when he joined the band for Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, and Lee’s experience of the famous concert in Luxembourg 2018.” A really great listen and well worth checking out. You can listen to it in full below, or via your favourite podcast platform such as Apple, Spotify or Amazon.
