Special Japanese-only Pink Floyd Hakone/Atom Heart Mother release

Just announced as a special edition, being sold only in Japan (presumably due to licensing/release agreement), is a very interesting package celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s pair of concerts at Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Hakone, Japan – the band’s first in that country. The background to the release is this: an original 16mm film of Atom Heart Mother from the 1971 Hakone Aphrodite shows was recently discovered. A long time was spent digitizing, restoring and remastering, and to mark the 50th anniversary of the ’71 Hakone Aphrodite event, a special edition (a two disc set of a CD and Blu-ray) of Atom Heart Mother will be released on August 4, 2021 in Japan. The Blu-ray disc contains the restored footage of Atom Heart Mother, showing the band on stage performing the song, and travelling around Japan, together with some additional bonus footage of Pink Floyd’s crew, setting up the show, dealing with issues, etc., which hasn’t been seen before. The pack comes with a 60-page photo book with never-seen-before photos, a reproduction programme, flyer, poster and ticket reprint which all looks great! More details can be found at PinkFloyd.jp (https://www.pinkfloyd.jp/), although if you can’t read Japanese you’ll need to use Google Translate or similar. Orders can now be placed through various links found at sonymusicjapan.lnk.to/PF_gjb (https://sonymusicjapan.lnk.to/PF_gjb) including Amazon Japan, HMV, Sony Music Store, and others. We suspect that most, if not all, of these retailers will happily ship the item worldwide, although in certain countries customs duties or import taxes will be levied, so please be aware of this and check before ordering. If you want to see a quick comparison of a short part of the footage, comparing the newly restored film with what many of us will have been familiar with for many years, here’s something that Sony Music Japan have put together:

Reminder: David Gilmour’s Yes, I Have Ghosts 7″ out today

A reminder, should you need it – today is Black Friday Record Store Day, and for those in the UK, retailers have in the last few minutes put all the special releases for this event available to purchase online! Included in this special RSD for Black Friday (the final Friday in November), is a 7″ vinyl release from Sony Legacy of “Yes, I Have Ghosts”, the first new song from David Gilmour in five years which features his daughter Romany on harp and vocals. The inspiration for the track was Polly Samson’s novel A Theatre for Dreamers, a Sunday Times bestseller about an idyllic poet/musician/artist community in 1960s Greece. An alternate version of the song is on the B-side. As with the other RSD 2020 releases, it is a limited edition: generally the RSD releases are pressed up as just a couple of thousand or so worldwide. We understand that there are 5,000 of David’s single available to snap up from today. Some of you may also be interested in the 12″ single of The Green Manalishi, recorded at the Mick Fleetwood and Friends celebration of Peter Green, which David appeared at (although doesn’t appear on this particular song). And, as we’ve mentioned previously, go to RecordStoreDay.com (https://www.recordstoreday.com) for more details of participating stores near you. A reminder that it will ONLY be these stores selling these releases; first come, first served, and only one copy per customer.

David Gilmour’s Yes, I Have Ghosts in 2020 Black Friday Record Store Day

Just when you thought the three Record Store Days this year kept you busy with checking out what releases were coming out on the different days (or “drops”), another RSD is on its way on 27th November. The normal RSD was split, of course, due to Covid-19 (something that has affected pretty much all aspects of life). Releases this year have included the 12″ single from Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets, the 7″ from Pink Floyd, and the 1990 Roger Waters Berlin gig on clear vinyl. Occasionally there’s what is normally a second RSD for Black Friday (the final Friday in November), and this has now been confirmed. Whilst exact details of everything to be included are still to be confirmed, one thing that IS included, is a 7″ vinyl release from Sony Legacy of “Yes, I Have Ghosts”, the first new song from David Gilmour in five years which features his daughter Romany on harp and vocals. The inspiration for the track was Polly Samson’s novel A Theatre for Dreamers, a Sunday Times bestseller about an idyllic poet/musician/artist community in 1960s Greece. As with the other RSD 2020 releases, it is a limited edition: generally the RSD releases are pressed up as just a couple of thousand or so worldwide. We understand that there are going to be 5,000 of David’s single available to snap up on the day. And, as we’ve mentioned previously, go to RecordStoreDay.com (https://www.recordstoreday.com) for more details of participating stores near you. A reminder that it will ONLY be these stores selling these releases; the stores themselves can’t sell them online – the record will become available for customers coming through the door of the store from the morning of the 27th (and not before), in limited quantities – first come, first served, and only one copy per customer. If copies remain (this year, normally after 6pm on the day), they may put them for sale online (and of course, there’ll also be copies on eBay inevitably…).

In Conversation with Hoger

Following the success of his previous two singles, Hoger has released his incredible new single “Show Me How To Love”. The track deeply delves into the way that different perceptions of how to love can cause confusion and unnecessary heartache. Through interweaving an entrancing melody with his commanding vocal presence, Hoger manages to enthral in …

Roger Waters: Us + Them coming to digital next month

Good news for all those who have been patiently waiting for news of the domestic release of the concert film 'Roger Waters: Us + Them' – the digital release of this has just been announced. The film documents the 156 date 2017-2018 tour which played to a combined audience of 2.3 million across a number of countries, and was quite an incredible spectacle, coupled with a great set list and a powerful message at the heart of it all.The review by BD's Ed Lopez-Reyes (movies/roger-waters-us-them-concert-film-reviewed-2.html) noted that the intersection of beautifully crafted sound and footage combined with director Sean Evans' ability to turn an action-packed, live performance into an atmospheric, ethereal experience, raises the bar for concert video… . Those who were fortunate enough to catch the film in cinemas last year seemed to be universally knocked out by it (as we were). For those who want to relive the show, digitally, you'll be able to catch it in 4K (Ultra HD), HD and SD formats from June 16th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, and available on the Apple, Googleplay, and Amazon platforms from that date. Included will be some all-new post-feature content which includes two additional concert songs missing from the original feature (Comfortably Numb and Smell the Roses) as well as A Fleeting Glimpse, a documentary short featuring behind-the-scenes moments from the tour, which we think is the one that was shown following the screening of the main feature in cinemas last year. We're hoping that the physical release won't be too far away now, for all those who want this on DVD/Blu-ray, or CD (and hopefully vinyl too). As and when we get any confirmed information on these, we will of course let you know.In the meantime, mark your diaries for June 16th and the digital release of Us + Them!

Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets – film premiere pictures

Last night, a significant chunk of you would have been at cinemas in various countries, watching the special presentation of Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets Live At The Roundhouse. Followed by an exclusive Q A with the band, that was recorded a short while ago, reaction to the film (and the Q A) has been thoroughly positive.Brain Damage was at the world premiere on Monday evening, at London's Picturehouse Central, which included a nice introduction by Nick Mason before welcoming the rest of the band to join him in front of the screen. Pictures of this are below. For those who are yet to see the film (which is released on April 17th on Blu-ray, DVD, CD and 2LP, as well as digitally) we won't spoil things for you. Suffice it to say that a fantastic job has been done with the recording, and editing, of the Saucers' at the Roundhouse. Whilst some live albums and videos can be quite sterile, LATR has an involving and exciting feel to it. In places there are short interview segments, and these work well in the points of the show when the stage falls into darkness, and instruments are changed. The interview bits give good insight into the project, and only enhance things. You will NOT want to miss seeing this release…it has easily exceeded our hopes and expectations for the live recording.Just for some clarification, we went direct to Sony to check out the situation with region coding on the Blu-ray edition as there is still some confusion or misinformation about it. We have had confirmation from them that the Blu-ray has NO region coding at all, so will be playable worldwide, irrespective of where you purchase it from.ORDERING INFORMATION:You can order the various editions through the following direct links, taking advantage of Amazon's pre-order price guarantee so you will automatically pay the lowest asking price between placing your order, and release, whilst giving Brain Damage much needed help with running costs without costing you any extra. Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets Roundhouse Blu-ray – NO region coding confirmed!

The announcement of Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets: Live At The Roundhouse, coming via Sony Records on April 17th, 2020 as a 2CD/DVD package, on double vinyl and on Blu-ray, has gone down very well with those who have already seen the band perform, and with those who haven't yet had the opportunity! These releases include the show in its entirety, and the video formats include some additional footage including interviews and rehearsals. The pair of Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets shows at London's Roundhouse on May 3rd and 4th were recorded with a grand total of 18(!) cameras were pressed into action on the second night. These included remotely operated cameras, and one suspended on wires which flew back and forth above the audience. The result of this expensive and challenging filming and recording exercise (cameras were positioned to minimise any impact on the audience) looks spectacular on the footage we've seen so far. This week, Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XWMFWG/braindamage-20) have alarmed some by noting that the Blu-ray edition won't be compatible in North America and other countries. We went direct to Sony to check this out, and we have had confirmation from them that this was an Amazon error (which Sony had Amazon correct immediately), and that the Blu-ray has NO region coding at all, so will be playable worldwide, irrespective of where you purchase it from. This is great news! For a full, early viewing of Live At The Roundhouse, there's exclusive screenings coming to cinemas in selected cities worldwide for one night only on March 10th, 2020 – details of participating cinemas can be found at NickMasonFilm.com (http://www.nickmasonfilm.com/) where tickets can also be purchased. This theatrical event will also include a pre-recorded cinema exclusive Q A with Nick Mason and the band where they will answer questions submitted by fans. ORDERING INFORMATION:You can order the various editions through the following direct links, taking advantage of Amazon's pre-order price guarantee so you will automatically pay the lowest asking price between placing your order, and release, whilst giving Brain Damage much needed help with running costs without costing you any extra. Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon SACD reissued

To be released on January 24th, 2020, is a long-awaited reissue of the hybrid multichannel SACD (Super Audio CD) of Pink Floyd’s iconic 1973 album, The Dark Side Of The Moon. Originally released in the format (having a separate stereo layer playable on all normal CD players) in 2003 as mark of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the album, the SACD proved very popular. However, it has been out of print for some years, so the reissue later this month will be welcomed by many. The release is by Analogue Productions, and seems that they will be selling it exclusively through their AcousticSounds.com store (https://store.acousticsounds.com/index.cfm?get=detail Title_ID=133317), and preorders are now being taken. The mix is the same as the 2003 release, but we understand the packaging has been updated and the retailer are noting that it is presented in a deluxe format. SACDs provide high audio quality, and in certain cases (such as this, and the other Floyd SACD, Wish You Were Here) multi-channel, surround mixes too. The DSOTM and WYWH SACDs both sound superb, and it is worth checking to see if you have suitable equipment to play multichannel SACDs. Many Sony CD players are compatible with SACDs, and indeed Playstation 3 consoles all play SACDs with no problem. Other makes of CD/DVD/Blu-ray players do support the format, but this varies from model to model. If we hear of other retailers who are selling this title, we will let you know.
