Following their acquisition of the Pink Floyd catalogue, Sony Music have today announced an excellent first release: Pink Floyd at Pompeii MCMLXXII – a newly restored version of the classic Live At Pompeii, with a superb new audio mix by Steven Wilson. It will mark the first time the music will be officially available on vinyl. Before the home release, the iconic performance will return to the cinema screen. This new version of the groundbreaking 1972 film directed by Adrian Maben will, thanks to Trafalgar Releasing and Sony Music Vision, be in selected cinemas and IMAX worldwide from April 24th and tickets will be on sale
from March 5th at PinkFloyd.film (https://www.pinkfloyd.film) and of course, from participating cinemas directly. Digitally re-mastered in 4K from the original 35mm footage, with enhanced audio newly mixed by Steven Wilson, the upcoming theatrical release presents the definitive version of this pioneering film. Pink Floyd at Pompeii MCMLXXII is accompanied by the live album, set for release by Legacy Recordings, the catalogue division of Sony Music, on double CD, Digital Audio (streaming, Blu-ray and DVD), and for the very first time in Dolby Atmos and on double vinyl, from May 2nd. Presenting a first look at the newly restored footage and audio, a taster clip of Echoes has been released today. Obviously, YouTube has limitations, and the full releases should look and sound even better! The film has been meticulously hand restored, frame-by-frame, from the original 35mm cut negative – discovered in five dubiously labelled cans within Pink Floyd’s own archives. This momentous breakthrough unearthed the very film that rolled through the cameras during those sweltering days amidst the ruins of Pompeii over 50 years ago. Led by Lana Topham, Director of Restoration for Pink Floyd, the team’s mission was to preserve the integrity and beauty of the original picture. The film was scanned in 4K using advanced techniques to ensure the finest, sharpest detail. Colours were enhanced, and every frame was meticulously reviewed and repaired, maintaining a natural and vivid appearance with minimal grain adjustments. Lana: “Since 1994, I have searched for the elusive film rushes of Pink Floyd At Pompeii, so the recent discovery of the 1972 original 35mm cut negative was a very special moment. The newly restored version presents the first full 90-minute cut, combining the 60-minute source edit of the performance with the additional Abbey Road Studios documentary segments filmed shortly after.” The film also features stunning sound quality with a new theatrical and home entertainment mix by Steven Wilson in 5.1 and Dolby Atmos that enhances the film’s depth and clarity, preserving the authenticity and spirit of the original 1972 release. Wilson’s aim was to remain faithful to how the band would have sounded on those scorching hot days in 1971: “Ever since my dad brainwashed me as a kid by playing The Dark Side of the Moon on repeat, Pink Floyd has been my favourite band. They are my “Beatles”, deeply ingrained in my musical DNA. I first saw Pompeii from a grainy print at a local cinema. It made an incredible impression on me with its untethered and exploratory rock music made by four musicians that seemed to epitomise the notion of intellectual cool. It was an honour to remix the soundtrack to accompany Lana Topham’s incredible restoration of the film, which looks like it could’ve been filmed yesterday.” Steven’s 2025 remix – either standalone, or as part of the film – will be available on CD/LP/Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital Audio/Dolby Atmos from May 2nd. David Gilmour: Luck and Strange – new album announced!
This afternoon, the months of speculation and rumour come to a close, with the announcement of David Gilmour’s new album, Luck and Strange. It is his first new album in nine years, and those who have been on social media over the last couple of days will have seen movement on his official channels, changing the profile pictures and headers to subtle, rather mysterious images of a figure with their arms out, and rushing water. His official website, too, had undergone a similar change with the same imagery and a sign-up button. The album will be released on September 6th, on Sony Music, on LP, CD, Blu-ray and digital. Deluxe LP and CD boxsets will be announced in the coming weeks. The first track from the album – The Piper’s Call – will be released tomorrow (Thursday, April 25th), following a world exclusive first play on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show. A video for the song will be available to watch from Friday. Full track listings are shown below. Luck and Strange was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour’s first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, best known for his work with ALT-J and Marika Hackman. Of this new working relationship, David says, “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos, and said things like, “Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?” and “Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?”. He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.” The majority of the album’s lyrics have been composed by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s co-writer and collaborator for the past thirty years. Samson says of the lyrical themes covered on Luck and Strange, “It’s written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.” Gilmour elaborates, “We spent a load of time during and after lockdown talking about and thinking about those kind of things.” Polly has also found the experience of working with Charlie Andrew liberating. “He wants to know what the songs are about, he wants everyone who’s playing on them to have the ideas that are in the lyric informing their playing. I have particularly loved it for that reason.” The album features eight new tracks along with a reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ Between Two Points and has artwork and photography by the renowned artist Anton Corbijn. Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt and Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry and Roger Eno on keyboards with string and choral arrangements by Will Gardner. The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 at a jam in a barn at David’s house.
Pink Floyd Hakone/Atom Heart Mother special edition release announced
Just announced is the worldwide release – housed in a 7″ gatefold sleeve – of a special edition of Atom Heart Mother, originally sold only in Japan in August 2021. This is a very interesting package celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s pair of concerts at Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Hakone, Japan – the band’s first in that country. This special edition will be available from December 8th, 2023. The background to the release is this: an original 16mm film of Atom Heart Mother from the 1971 Hakone Aphrodite shows was recently discovered in a fan’s garage. A long time was spent digitizing, restoring and remastering, and to mark the 50th anniversary of the ’71 Hakone Aphrodite event, a special edition (a two disc set of a CD and Blu-ray) of the Atom Heart Mother album was released in Japan. Now, finally, this enhanced video will be released outside of Japan. The Blu-ray disc contains the restored footage of Atom Heart Mother, showing the band on stage performing the song, and travelling around Japan, together with some additional bonus footage of Pink Floyd’s crew, setting up the show, dealing with issues, etc., which hasn’t been seen before. The pack comes with a 60-page photo book with never-seen-before photos, a reproduction programme, venue map flyer, Osaka show poster and Hakone Aphrodite ticket reprint which all looks great! The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary breakout sets: CD, LP, Blu-ray
Just announced is the release – on October 13th – of breakout sets from Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon (TDSOTM) 50th Anniversary box set. Coming on that date, from Warner Music (Sony Music outside Europe) are the hoped for stand-alone releases of the newly remastered TDSOTM on CD, LP and Blu-ray. First released as part of the box set which appeared in March, this will be the first time that the new remaster of the classic album will be available on its own. The Blu-ray contains the Dolby Atmos and a 5.1 Surround mix as well as the remastered Stereo version. The package comes with commemorative postcards, stickers and a 24-page booklet. The 50th Anniversary continues to be celebrated as Pink Floyd invited a new generation of animators to enter a competition to create animated music videos for any of the 10 songs on the album, and a number of entries have been lodged already. Pink Floyd has a rich history of collaborating with animators (Ian Emes, Gerald Scarfe, etc.), and in some cases the visuals that accompany the songs have become synonymous with the music itself. Animators can enter up to 10 videos, one per song on the album. A winner will be selected from a panel of experts which will include Nick Mason and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell (Pink Floyd’s creative consultant). The deadline for submissions is November 30th 2023. To enter and for more information go to pinkfloyd.com/competition (https://www.pinkfloyd.com/competition/). A live streamed Q&A has also been announced, featuring Powell in conversation with animators who have created some videos in promotion for the competition and who will discuss their work and the creative process. The event will take place on September 6th at 5pm UK time on YouTube, via Pink Floyd’s official channel there. ORDERING INFORMATION:

New Syd Barrett limited heavyweight vinyl LP collection available to order
Some very interesting news today from Third Man Records, who have quite a reputation for quality, limited pressing. They’ve teamed up with Sony Music Entertainment for a very special, limited edition box set that many of you will undoubtably be interested in! Individually out of print on LP for almost ten years (the last issue of these was in 2014) and never previously available together on vinyl, Third Man are releasing Syd Barrettâs solo albums – The Madcap Laughs, Barrett, and Opel – as the 57th installment of their Vault subscription series. This reissue sees January 1970’s The Madcap Laughs pressed on ‘Golden Hair’ coloured vinyl, November 1970’s Barrett on ‘Baby Lemonade’ coloured vinyl, and 1988’s Opel on ‘Milky Way Opal’ coloured vinyl. All three LPs are pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Third Man Pressing in Detroit and will come housed in a newly-designed slipcase featuring a recursive portrait of Syd by New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Greg Ruth, executed in one continuous line without lifting the pen. An added bonus to this collection is a 7-inch single by David Gilmour covering two Barrett compositions. Dominoes was recorded live at London’s Royal Festival Hall in January 2002, and Dark Globe was recorded live in Clam, Austria, as a tribute, shortly after Syd’s death in July 2006. Order by midnight local time July 31st to guarantee yourself a copy of this essential collection, only at ThirdManStore.co.uk (https://thirdmanstore.co.uk/blogs/vault-news/introducing-vault-package-57-the-solo-works-of-syd-barrett). You will need to take out at least a quarterly subscription, which will INCLUDE the Barrett boxset, but once received you should be able to cancel this subscription – unless you fancy future releases and the other benefits that Third Man Records offer to their subscribers.
Roger Waters – Prague concert live cinema broadcast worldwide
Trafalgar Releasing, in conjunction with Sony Music, are collaborating with Roger Waters for the third time, following their cinema broadcasts of the Us And Them, and The Wall Live, concerts. On Thursday, May 25th, they will broadcast Roger’s “This Is Not a Drill” show live from Prague to cinemas around the world. This cinematic event will feature 20 Pink Floyd and Waters’ classic songs, along with the new song “The Bar”. Tickets will go on sale in one’s week’s time, on Tuesday, April 25th at www.thisisnotadrillfilm.com (https://www.thisisnotadrillfilm.com), where details of participating cinemas should also be available. They advise that this event has been time shifted in some markets to suit local time zones, which is a sensible move, to avoid being in the middle of the working day, or the middle of the night. Obviously, check local listings for more details of this. Here’s the trailer for the event:
The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary – exclusive Japanese SACD & loads of extras
As you all know, the 50th Anniversary of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon is next month, with a deluxe box set, the Live At Wembley 1974 LP and CD sets, and the official book (which we’ve seen and is very nice) that’s included in the box set, and available separately too, all being released on March 24th. Full details of all these, here (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/pink-floyds-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-50th-anniversary-box-set-anno.html). Exclusively, though, for the Japanese market (but thanks to HMV.co.jp (https://www.hmv.co.jp/en/artist_Pink-Floyd_000000000004473/item_The-Dark-Side-Of-The-Moon-Hybrid-Multi-Ch-Edition_13590862) and CDJapan (https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/SICP-10143), available worldwide online) is a hybrid SACD (Super Audio CD) version of the album, bundled with loads of reproduction memorabilia – as seen to the right! For those unfamiliar with hybrid SACDs, they hold higher resolution audio, often with surround sound versions as well as standard stereo, and the stereo version is playable on all normal CD/DVD/Blu-ray players. To play the multi-channel audio, you need a compatible player, but as the format was devised by Sony and Philips, there are plenty of those around still. The surround and stereo versions of TDSOTM on this SACD is as released in 2021 on the SACD from Analogue Productions SACD. The album is packaged in typical Japanese style – a 7″ version of the original album cover, along with the stickers and posters you would hope to be included in this reproduction. However, they are also including a wide array of reproduction Japanese memorabilia: 1972 Pink Floyd In Japan Photo Book (48 pages, Airport, Live, and Japan stay in 1972)
1972 Pink Floyd In Japan Tour Pamphlet (16 pages)

Pink Floyd’s A Momentary Lapse Of Reason remix – 2LP vinyl, CD, DVD, Blu-ray and 360 Reality Audio!
Just announced is the release of Pink Floyd’s A Momentary Lapse Of Reason – Remixed & Updated on physical and digital formats (including some unusual ones) in October 2021. Remixed and updated from the original 1987 master tapes for âThe Later Yearsâ by Andy Jackson with David Gilmour, assisted by Damon Iddins, the album on Pink Floyd Records (PFR37) will be available from 29 October on 2LP heavyweight 180g vinyl (cut at 45rpm for enhanced sound quality), CD, CD DVD, CD Blu-ray and digitally with stereo and 5.1 mixes. In addition, for the first time, and from 19 October 2021, the album will be presented in 360 Reality Audio (https://www.sony.com/electronics/360-reality-audio), a new immersive music experience that closely mimics the omni-directional soundscape of live musical performance for the listener using Sonyâs object-based 360 Spatial Sound technologies. This new edition of AMLOR will also be released in Dolby Audio and UHD in addition to 360 Reality Audio, all of which will continue with other Pink Floyd releases. The release of The Later Years project in 2019 gave an opportunity for a fresh overview of A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, originally released in 1987. By returning to some of Richard Wright’s original keyboard takes, and by re-recording new drum tracks with Nick Mason, producers David Gilmour and Bob Ezrin have restored a better creative balance between the three Pink Floyd members. Nick and David explain: David Gilmour said: “Some years after we had recorded the album, we came to the conclusion that we should update it to make it more timeless, featuring more of the traditional instruments that we liked and that we were more used to playing. This was something we thought it would benefit from. We also looked for and found some previously unused keyboard parts of Rickâs which helped us to come up with a new vibe, a new feeling for the album.
Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon SACD finally reissued
Back in January 2020, we advised that later that month the long-awaited reissue of the hybrid multichannel SACD (Super Audio CD) of Pink Floyd’s iconic 1973 album, The Dark Side Of The Moon, was due. Unfortunately, due to unspecified reasons (which were possibly related to the first appearance and spread
of Covid-19) the reissue was delayed. Great news for all of you who have been patiently waiting on confirmed information of when you could get your hands on this – it is now seemingly starting to ship out to those who have ordered it! Originally released in the SACD format (having a separate stereo layer playable on all normal CD players) in 2003 as part of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the album, the SACD proved very popular. However, it has been out of print for some years, so the reissue will be welcomed by many. The release comes on the Pink Floyd Records label (catalogue number PFR24) via Analogue Productions, and they are selling it fairly much exclusively through their US-based AcousticSounds.com store (https://store.acousticsounds.com/d/133317/Pink_Floyd-The_Dark_Side_Of_The_Moon-Hybrid_Multichannel_SACD), although for those in the UK and other places might prefer to use the UK’s Rough Trade (https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/pink-floyd/the-dark-side-of-the-moon-analogue-productions-sacd) as despite the total cost being similar to buying from Acoustic Sounds, it might negate the chance of having to pay customs charges or import duties. The mix on the SACD/CD layer is the same as the 2003 release, but as you’ll see from the unboxing video below, the packaging has been updated with a slipcover, with the disc held in a well-illustrated book housing. For those unfamiliar with the format, SACDs provide high audio quality, and in certain cases (such as this, and the other Floyd SACD, Wish You Were Here) multi-channel, surround mixes too. The TDSOTM and WYWH SACDs both sound superb, and it is worth checking to see if you have suitable equipment to play multichannel SACDs. A number of Sony CD players are compatible with SACDs, and indeed some Playstation consoles play SACDs with no problem. Other makes of CD/DVD/Blu-ray players do support the format, but this varies from model to model. There are a number of “universal” players out there which include SACD in their capabilities. It is worth checking the specifications of players, particularly if you are looking to pick up a cheap, second-hand machine on eBay and suchlike.
