Originally released in 2011, and now hard to find (particularly on vinyl), the compilation An Introduction To Syd Barrett is getting a deserved reissue on 2nd December 2022 on 2LP – on heavyweight 180g vinyl – and on CD. The album is designed to provide a handy overview of this visionary talent, with an eighteen track collection taking in six early Pink Floyd songs, alongside twelve of Syd’s solo recordings. David Gilmour, who originally worked on Syd’s two solo albums, as co-producer of The Madcap Laughs and as producer of Barrett, was the executive producer for the album. Damon Iddins and Andy Jackson at Astoria Studios remixed five tracks including Octopus, She Took A Long Cool Look, Dominoes and Here I Go, with Gilmour adding bass guitar to the last track. Pink Floyd’s Matilda Mother also received a fresh 2010 mix. Both versions of the album feature the original 24-page booklet and graphics plus all lyrics, and was designed including the cover art by long time Pink Floyd associate the late Storm Thorgerson and his estimable studio. As hinted at on the official Pink Floyd social media channels last week, this week London’s Battersea Power Station, which has been undergoing major renovation and rebuilding, was lit up to mark the release of the Floyd’s superb Animals 2018 Remix on LP, CD, DVD, Blu-ray and Super Audio CD (SACD) (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/now-announced-pink-floyds-animals-2018-remix-on-multiple-for.html). With a test run on Tuesday night working well, it was full steam ahead for last night as you will be able to see from the short video below. On the first night, there were a variety of different colour projections and chimney colours. If you fancy taking a look yourself, it is running again tonight (Thursday) between 8:30pm – 11pm. With the Battersea Power Station site a lot more open these days, there will be various vantage points you might want to take, but clearly there’s also a good view from across the River Thames as well.
In a new interview with Consequence Of Sound (https://consequence.net/2022/09/nick-mason-interview-pink-floyd-animals-2018-remix/), Nick Mason revealed he kept out of the arguments over the sleeve notes for the upcoming release of the incredible 2018 remix of Pink Floyd’s Animals. The remix (including surround versions) is out this Friday on LP, CD, Blu-ray and Super Audio CD (SACD), with a deluxe edition gathering together the first of those three, with a DVD containing the same material as the Blu-ray, all in a well-designed gatefold cover. Nick said: “David and Roger had a major disagreement about the liner notes, and like all great world wars no one can quite remember what it was about now and what the problem was. But there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing and eventually some sort of resolution was reached. I managed to stay well out of it.” Adding to the delay in the release was Covid and Brexit. Nick also praised the new cover designs (there’s two different ones, with the main, dusk image joined by a darker, night-time shot for the Blu-ray cover) with the return to Battersea: “I think its terrific, and it’s a continuation of an idea we’ve had before, which is sort of updating something that has existed â including the 1971 Relics compilation and last year’s reissue of 1987’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason”. As you all no doubt know, Pink Floyd’s Animals 2018 Remix is being released on CD, LP (with gatefold artwork), Blu-ray, and SACD on September 16th, and on October 7th, in Deluxe Gatefold format. Today (Friday, 22nd July) the first audio from the release has appeared, in the form of the 2018 remix of the magnificent Dogs, which you can hear below! The Deluxe Gatefold version of Animals 2018 Remix includes the LP, CD, audio Blu-ray, audio DVD and a 32-page book. The Blu-ray and DVD audio include the 2018 remix in Stereo, 5.1 Surround (both by James Guthrie) and the original 1977 Stereo mix. The 32-page booklet features rarely seen behind the scenes photographs of the original album sleeve shoot along with live images and memorabilia. We’ve had emails asking about the Blu-ray and DVD editions, enquiring whether there is any region coding. This is important for those who are looking to order from other countries, either due to availability, or price. We’ve had it confirmed that there is NO region coding on the discs, which is great news. The album’s iconic cover shows an inflatable pig (known as Algie) floating between two chimneys of London’s Battersea Power Station, conceived by Roger Waters, and designed by long-time collaborator Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis Studios. For this new release, the artwork has been re-designed for the modern era by Storm’s Hipgnosis partner Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell. This newly released video, below, uses some animation with the new album cover design to complement the audio (albeit in lower quality than the eventual release) of Dogs, released today as an Instant Grat/Digital Single. Something that we know probably most – if not all – of you have been eagerly awaiting, has just been announced this afternoon. Pink Floyd’s Animals 2018 Remix is being released on CD, LP (with gatefold artwork), Blu-ray, and SACD on September 16th, and on October 7th, in Deluxe Gatefold format. The Deluxe Gatefold version includes the LP, CD, audio Blu-ray, audio DVD and a 32-page book. The Blu-ray and DVD audio include the 2018 remix in Stereo, 5.1 Surround (both by James Guthrie) and the original 1977 Stereo mix. The 32-page booklet features rarely seen behind the scenes photographs of the original album sleeve shoot along with live images and memorabilia. The album’s iconic cover shows an inflatable pig (known as Algie) floating between two chimneys of London’s Battersea Power Station, conceived by Roger Waters, and designed by long-time collaborator Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis Studios. For this new release, the artwork has been re-designed for the modern era by Stormâs Hipgnosis partner Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell. Taking new shots of the building as it appeared during the recent conversion work, Po experimented with new angles and produce some striking new takes on the classic original. Po elaborates: “With the original 1977 album cover being such an iconic piece of stand-alone art, I had the chance to update it, which was a rather daunting task, but Hipgnosis took the opportunity to re-photograph the image to reflect a changing world, and by using modern digital colouring techniques I kept Pink Floyd’s rather bleak message of moral decay using the Orwellian themes of animals, the pig Algie, faithful to the message of the album.” The main image of the train tracks and shed, already familiar to many of you following Roger Waters’ social media posts about it, features on most of the formats, but there’s a strikingly different image – a more dark, moody and colourful look at Battersea Power Station at night – used for the Blu-ray cover. Happy Halloween! Regulars to Brain Damage over the years will know that our good friend Joe Ringus is a hugely talented pumpkin artist, and each year crafts a Pink Floyd themed pumpkin for Halloween (a celebration which is embraced by many, principally tonight, but in a number of places it covers a number of days). Those regulars will no doubt be as keen as we have been to see if Joe would be continuing the tradition this year, and if so, what design would be picked. The great news is that Joe has been hard at work yet again, and has done another phenomenal job! We’re delighted to share his incredible carving with you, which is a representation of the key detail on the cover of the Floyd’s A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. This is very timely with the release on Friday of the Remixed & Updated edition (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/pink-floyds-a-momentary-lapse-of-reason-remix-2lp-vinyl-cd-dvd-blu-ray-and-360-reality-a.html) of the album! Joe said: “For the longest time I didn’t think this design would be possible on a pumpkin. But with limited design selections left to choose from, it was time to give it a try! It was also fitting that it coincided with the remix of A Momentary Lapse Of Reason! Happy Halloween!” Thanks Joe – we think you’ve done another excellent job! Remixed and updated from the original 1987 master tapes for âThe Later Yearsâ by Andy Jackson with David Gilmour, assisted by Damon Iddins, the album on Pink Floyd Records (PFR37) will be available from 29 October on 2LP heavyweight 180g vinyl (cut at 45rpm for enhanced sound quality), CD, CD DVD, CD Blu-ray and digitally with stereo and 5.1 mixes. In addition, for the first time, and from 19 October 2021, the album will be presented in 360 Reality Audio (https://www.sony.com/electronics/360-reality-audio), a new immersive music experience that closely mimics the omni-directional soundscape of live musical performance for the listener using Sonyâs object-based 360 Spatial Sound technologies. This new edition of AMLOR will also be released in Dolby Audio and UHD in addition to 360 Reality Audio, all of which will continue with other Pink Floyd releases. The release of The Later Years project in 2019 gave an opportunity for a fresh overview of A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, originally released in 1987. By returning to some of Richard Wright’s original keyboard takes, and by re-recording new drum tracks with Nick Mason, producers David Gilmour and Bob Ezrin have restored a better creative balance between the three Pink Floyd members. Nick and David explain: David Gilmour said: “Some years after we had recorded the album, we came to the conclusion that we should update it to make it more timeless, featuring more of the traditional instruments that we liked and that we were more used to playing. This was something we thought it would benefit from. We also looked for and found some previously unused keyboard parts of Rickâs which helped us to come up with a new vibe, a new feeling for the album.
