Coming on May 17th, on Blu-ray and compatible digital platforms (Apple Music, Tidal, and Amazon Music), is the Dolby Atmos version of Pink Floyd’s Animals 2018 Remix. It is the first time the album will have been available in Dolby Atmos. The Blu-ray includes High Resolution Stereo and 5.1 mixes alongside the 1977 Original Stereo Mix. For those who have compatible equipment to hear it in its full glory, the Dolby Atmos mix goes beyond ordinary listening by immersing the listener in the music, revealing details with unparalleled clarity and depth. Listeners will feel like they are inside the song as music moves around and above them. The album artwork has been reimagined especially for this release and presented in a digipak with a 16-page booklet, a sticker and a postcard. The front cover image still includes the iconic pig floating between two chimneys of the Battersea Power Station, conceived by Roger Waters. However, for this new release, the artwork has been re-created for the modern era by Storm Thorgerson’s Hipgnosis partner Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell and Peter Curzon from StormStudios, and shows the historic building as it looks now, complete with light projections, variations of which feature in the accompanying booklet. The projections and graphics were mapped and designed by Peter Curzon for the launch of the 2018 Remix and the photography is by Rupert Truman and Benny Trickett with Aubrey Powell. The Animals 2018 Remix is also available on CD, LP (with gatefold artwork), SACD and Deluxe Gatefold formats. The Deluxe Gatefold version includes LP, CD, audio Blu-ray, audio DVD and a 32-page book. David Gilmour – a very happy birthday to you!
Our very best wishes, and many happy returns, to David Gilmour who is celebrating his birthday today (March 6th)! Born and raised in Cambridge, David became involved with various bands in the area, principally Jokers Wild who were a popular draw when they played, before joining Pink Floyd in 1968. More recent years have seen David concentrating on his solo career, and helping out chums on their musical projects on an ad hoc basis. In 2019, some 120+ of David’s guitars were auctioned, raising $21.5 million (including some record-breaking amounts for individual instruments) which went to the environmental charity ClientEarth (https://clientearth.org). He also appeared as a guest performer at the Richard Thompson 70th Birthday Concert (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/david-gilmour-guest-appearance-at-richard-thompson-70th-birthday-co.html), playing Dimming Of The Day and Fat Old Sun, and joining the encore. In 2020, on February 25th, shortly before all activity stopped around the world due to Coronavirus, David joined the stellar bill for the Mick Fleetwood Friends Celebrate The Music of Peter Green and The Early Years of Fleetwood Mac (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mick-fleetwood-friends-concert-box-set-available-to-orde.html) concert at London’s Palladium, which has been released as a 4LP, 2CD, Blu-ray and book box set (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mick-fleetwood-friends-concert-box-set-available-to-orde.html). The concert was in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust charity (https://teenagecancertrust.org). More recently, of course, there have been numerous pictures of David posted by his wife, Polly, showing him being rather active in recording studios – one reason is the upcoming Mark Knopfler charity single bringing over 60 musicians – particularly guitarists – together for the Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mark-knopfler-gathers-60-guitar-legends-including-david-gilmour-for-charity-s.html). However, there looks to have been plenty of activity unrelated to this project, giving indications that new music from David may be on the cards… It just remains for us to wish David a very happy day! Roger Waters – Dark Side Redux picture disc in 2024 Record Store Day
Just revealed is the list of exclusives that will be made available as part of the 2024 Record Store Day, which is being held on 20th April at all participating, independent stockists. Amongst the huge array of special editions, all of which are produced in varying degrees of limited numbers, is one for the Roger Waters collectors out there. As you will be aware, last year he released his Redux of The Dark Side Of The Moon, which – on vinyl – was issued in nine different versions, from standard black to almost any colour you like. Nine always felt an odd number (literally) for this release, and a tenth edition has just been revealed. On the Record Store Day list, they have included a limited edition 1LP picture disc of the album that will be individually numbered in a die-cut sleeve. There will be 3000 copies worldwide, so actually in greater numbers than some of the different colour variants of the album, which were all 2LP sets. We suspect they’ve been able to squeeze the album (without the additional track that came with the vinyl versions last year) onto a single LP, but obviously we don’t know at this stage if there has been any editing to help it fit. And, as we’ve mentioned previously, all the limited edition items are released just through RSD participating stores on 20th April 2024 – go to RecordStoreDay.com (https://www.RecordStoreDay.com) or RecordStoreDay.co.uk (https://www.RecordStoreDay.co.uk) for more details of who those will be. A reminder that it will ONLY be these stores participating; the stores themselves can’t sell it online – the record will become available for customers coming through the door of the store from the morning of the 20th (and not before), in limited quantities – first come, first served, and only one copy per customer. After RSD, if copies remain, the retailers may put them for sale online (and of course, there’ll also be copies on eBay inevitably…).
Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets announce UK tour for June 2024
Just announced – Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets will be playing fourteen dates on their Set The Controls tour around the UK, as their European tour expands. The last time they played the UK was April/May 2022, so it is a treat for the band to be back in June this year! Last year, of course, the band played shows in Australia, preceded by a string of European dates including a stunning night in the excavated ruins of Pompeii, with the modern city of Pompei conferring honorary citizenship on Nick. Tickets for the new dates – detailed below – go on sale on Friday (February 16th) at 11am UK time, from MyTicket.co.uk (https://myticket.co.uk). Nick Mason said: “Six years ago when I got behind the drums again and we started playing the early Pink Floyd material, it was a real pleasure on so many levels. Many of the tracks had never actually been played live, so to have performed them all over the world has been something we’ve all enjoyed immensely. To get the opportunity to come back to the UK for another tour is something the band and I had been hoping we would be able to do, so to say “we’re back” feels good!” Here’s all the dates for you: June 11th – VICTORIA HALL, STOKE-ON-TRENT, ENGLAND (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2024/june-11th-victoria-hall-stoke-on-trent-en.html) – TICKETS (https://myticket.co.uk)

Hipgnosis Exhibition opens in Germany
A recently opened exhibition of Hipgnosis pictures and artwork in Germany has been attracting a lot of interest from visitors, along with local media. Co-curator Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell was in touch with us, to provide some more detail on this for you all. Po said: “The Hipgnosis Exhibition ‘Breathe’ opened on Sunday 21st January to an enthusiastic crowd of 400 people. The exhibition runs over 3 floors of this wonderful gallery and contains 150 Hipgnosis pictures, curated by myself and John Colton of the Browse Gallery, Berlin. There has been great press and TV coverage. “The initial rooms celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon and all the artwork that has been designed by Hipgnosis or Storm Studios over the past fifty years related to that celebrated album. The Ludwig Schloss Gallery is in Oberhausen, 30 minutes by car from the centre of Dusseldorf. Germany has always been a huge admirer of Pink Floyd, and Hipgnosis, and this marks the sixth exhibition held over the last five years in that country, with many thanks to the continued support from Pink Floyd.” For more information on the gallery, and the exhibition – which runs until May 2024 – please visit Ludwiggalerie.de (https://www.ludwiggalerie.de/en/exhibition/current-exhibitions/). Our thanks to Po for the update, as well!
Pink Floyd releasing The Dark Side Of The Moon Crystal Clear 2LP Collector’s Edition
A date for the diary for (we suspect) a lot of you: on April 19th, Pink Floyd will be releasing a Collectorâs Edition of The Dark Side Of The Moon on crystal clear vinyl (https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0CTHWT8YN/braindamage-21). This will be a 2 x 180g single sided LP set, featuring UV artwork print on the non-groove side (so side 1 on the first record, and side 2 on the second). From the initial pictures of it, and from seeing other UV releases, it promises to be a wonderful looking addition to the collection! The technology is fairly new, and from the limited examples from other artists already released, it gives great looking results. This new edition of The Dark Side Of The Moon features the prism spectrum seen through the playable side of the vinyl whilst maintaining the best quality sound. Packaged in a slipcased gatefold sleeve, it also comes with an exclusive poster. It’s great to see them use this pioneering UV printing process. The images are printed with a high end UV printer, using UV-LED light to dry the permanent ink on the side without audio on which the image is printed. This combination of one-sided audio and the UV print (on the side without audio) combines the best of both worlds: great audio and a beautiful image to enjoy. You can order this special edition through the following links, whilst helping this site with its ongoing running costs, at no additional cost to you, as we participate in the Amazon affiliate programme. You can order through Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0CSPHJQ24/braindamage-20), Amazon UK (https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0CTHWT8YN/braindamage-21), Canada (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0CSPHJQ24/braindamageon-20), Germany (http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0CTHWT8YN/braindamage0f-21), France (http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0CTHWT8YN/braindamageon-21), Italy (http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B0CTHWT8YN/bradamonl-21) and Spain (http://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B0CTHWT8YN/braidama01-21). A very happy birthday to Nick Mason!
All of us here at Brain Damage offer our very best wishes to Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who celebrates the very special occasion of his 80th birthday today (January 27th). We all hope you are going to have a fantastic day, Nick! The cornerstone of the band, he had his first drum kit at the tender age of 13. A member of Pink Floyd since the earliest iterations, he is the only one to have appeared on every one of their albums. Thanks to his late father Bill, he has been a petrol head from a young boy, and cars have been – and remain – one of his major passions in life. His most recent book, Passion for Speed (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/passion-for-speed-nick-mason-and-mark-hales-2.html), is worth checking out, as is the DVD of the same name (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/dvds-and-videos/passion-for-speed-ferrari-enzo-dvd-nick-mason-and-mark-2.html) focusing on his Ferrari Enzo car (with Nick heavily involved). Of course, for those who haven’t read it, Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/inside-out-2011-edition-updated-paperback-nick-mason-2.html) is an absolutely essential read, and available in a variety of editions: hardback, paperback and an audiobook, which is read by Nick himself… Nick has contributed to a number of magazines on motoring issues over the years (including a fascinating monthly column in Octane Magazine), and also became president of the Guild of Motoring Writers. He is a trustee of the Beaulieu National Motor Museum, and a life member and Guardian of the BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club). He has been involved in motor racing since the early 1970s and has entered Le Mans five times. Musically, of course, the big news over the last few years was the launch of his new band, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets. The four initial, small gigs in May 2018 held in London lead to a very successful and critically acclaimed European tour in September. This was followed, of course, in 2019 with dates in the US, Canada, and more dates in the UK and Europe. 2020 saw the release of the superb London Roundhouse concert film on audio and video formats, and was due to see the band play more shows. Sadly, the pandemic put the halt on any such plans for 2020 and 2021, but the band were back with a bang in 2022 and 2023! This year, Nick and the band will be back on tour, with six dates in Italy, and one in Germany, announced so far – click here to see all the 2024 gigs as it stands (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2024/index.php) – and we suspect there are plans for other shows too. Obviously, we’ll let you know as and when we get any further dates through. Many happy returns, Nick, and see you on the road!
