David Gilmour involved with upcoming Peter Green tribute album

Peter Green Celebration concert, which takes place in just under a month’s time at London’s Palladium (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/david-gilmour-helping-mick-fleetwood-celebrate-peter-green-at-london-pall.html) (poster shown to the left), and includes David Gilmour amongst the performers that night, fellow participant Kirk Hammett has been speaking to GuitarWorld.com (https://www.guitarworld.com/news/kirk-hammett-talks-greeny-les-paul-meeting-peter-green-and-playing-and-singing-on-a-new-green-and-fleetwood-mac-tribute-record) about a Peter Green tribute album also coming out. In the interview, Hammett notes that he plays on two songs on the album, and one of them – Need Your Love So Bad – involves David. Hammett said: There was a demo of this one song called Need Your Love So Bad that they found. It’s a demo; Peter Green sang that song in his bedroom, and at the end of it you could hear his mom saying to turn it down or something like that. So what they did, they took that vocal track and they isolated it, and they’ve created an augmented instrumentation track done by David Gilmour. So the song Need Your Love So Bad, [was] created by David Gilmour and his band, and they flew in the vocals on top of it. It’s a more modern, updated version of Need Your Love So Bad, and that’s one of the tracks. The other track is Man of the World with myself and Mick Fleetwood. I am singing on it; it’s an easy song to sing, it’s got that talk-singing kind of thing, I can handle that. That’s about the length of my singing abilities, but I’m into it. I’m so into it, I’m into all aspects of it, it’s just one of those things, it just kind of unfolded like this.” Once we have more information about this tribute album, we will of course let you know. As a reminder, the tribute concert includes (other than Hammett and Gilmour) Mick Fleetwood, Billy Gibbons, Jonny Lang, John Mayall, Christine McVie, Zak Starkey, Steven Tyler and Bill Wyman. Alongside the invited guest musicians, the house band consists of Fleetwood alongside Andy Fairweather Low, Dave Bronze and Ricky Peterson, and the concert will be filmed for eventual release.

IMPORTANT – BRAIN DAMAGE WEBSITE

IMPORTANT – PLEASE NOTE:
At some point in the next day or so this site will be unavailable for a short while. Due to some technical changes being imposed on us by our current site hosts, we are being forced to move to new site hosts which will hopefully eradicate the adverts which are appearing some of the time, and may also give a performance boost to things too. We are taking this step despite it meaning we will lose a lot of money, but hope it brings a more enjoyable experience for all our visitors. If you find BD not available, please try again a little later, as we don’t have a firm timescale for how quickly this work will complete. Thanks so much for your patience and understanding, and for your support of the website.

Happy birthday, Nick Mason!

Passion for Speed (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/passion-for-speed-nick-mason-and-mark-hales-2.html), is worth checking out, as is the DVD of the same name (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/dvds-and-videos/passion-for-speed-ferrari-enzo-dvd-nick-mason-and-mark-2.html) focusing on his Ferrari Enzo car (with Nick heavily involved). Of course, for those who haven’t read it, Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/inside-out-2011-edition-updated-paperback-nick-mason-2.html) is an absolute essential read, and available in a variety of editions: hardback, softback (paperback) and an audiobook, which is read by Nick himself… Nick has contributed to a number of magazines on motoring issues over the years (including a fascinating monthly column in Octane Magazine), and also became president of the Guild of Motoring Writers. He is a trustee of the Beaulieu National Motor Museum, and a life member and Guardian of the BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club). He has been involved in motor racing since the early 1970s and has entered Le Mans five times. Musically, of course, the big news recently was the launch of his new band, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets. The four initial, small gigs in May 2018 held in London lead to a very successful and critically acclaimed European tour in September. Last year, of course, the tour continued with dates in the US, Canada, and more dates in the UK and Europe. 2020 sees more UK and European shows, and hopefully the release of the London Roundhouse concert filmed last year! Many happy returns, Nick, and see you on the road!

UK’s Prog Magazine celebrates 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s The Wall

available worldwide online (https://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/Prog-Print-Back-Issues/prog-issue-105/?listtype=list searchparam=prog) is the new issue (issue 105, January 2020) of the UK’s Prog Magazine. Always a decent read, this month’s issue has three features in particular of interest to Pink Floyd fans. First, there’s a two-page look at Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets, and in particular, the band’s UK and Ireland tour this year. With comments from Nick and guitarist Lee Harris, it finds the band missing the stage, and looking forward to being back on it in the spring when the dates resume. The main feature is a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s epic double album The Wall in a ten-page feature. They talked to Nick Mason, Bob Ezrin, Gerald Scarfe, and Bob Geldof about how the album evolved into a live extravaganza, a movie and how it pretty much broke the band. It’s a lively, and fascinating, look at this wide-ranging project. The Wall feature is followed by a two-page interview with the Floyd’s Creative Director Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, and Andy Jackson, long-time collaborator with the band who mixed and produced much of the music on The Later Years. There’s also brand new and exclusive interviews with Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Marillion, Sons Of Apollo, The Flower Kings, Edison’s Children, Kaprekar’s Constant, Nightmare Scenario, The Blackheart Orchestra, American Tears, Field Music, Lee Abraham Music and more… Plus there’s the results of the 2019 Readers’ Poll (with Nick Mason in the top ten drummers, and the Saucers in the top ten event category), and a look at 50 years of the legendary Friars Aylesbury venue. And music from Oak, The Dave Foster Band, Stuckfish, Moonshot Band and more on the CD. If your local store doesn’t stock this magazine, you can get a copy, shipped anywhere in the world, through this direct link (https://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/Prog-Print-Back-Issues/prog-issue-105/?listtype=list searchparam=prog).

Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon SACD reissued

To be released on January 24th, 2020, is a long-awaited reissue of the hybrid multichannel SACD (Super Audio CD) of Pink Floyd’s iconic 1973 album, The Dark Side Of The Moon. Originally released in the format (having a separate stereo layer playable on all normal CD players) in 2003 as mark of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the album, the SACD proved very popular. However, it has been out of print for some years, so the reissue later this month will be welcomed by many. The release is by Analogue Productions, and seems that they will be selling it exclusively through their AcousticSounds.com store (https://store.acousticsounds.com/index.cfm?get=detail Title_ID=133317), and preorders are now being taken. The mix is the same as the 2003 release, but we understand the packaging has been updated and the retailer are noting that it is presented in a deluxe format. SACDs provide high audio quality, and in certain cases (such as this, and the other Floyd SACD, Wish You Were Here) multi-channel, surround mixes too. The DSOTM and WYWH SACDs both sound superb, and it is worth checking to see if you have suitable equipment to play multichannel SACDs. Many Sony CD players are compatible with SACDs, and indeed Playstation 3 consoles all play SACDs with no problem. Other makes of CD/DVD/Blu-ray players do support the format, but this varies from model to model. If we hear of other retailers who are selling this title, we will let you know.

Pink Floyd feature in Uncut’s Prog Rock Archive Collection magazine

online worldwide through this link (https://nme.backstreetmerch.com/artist/uncut/magazines/prog-rock-ultimate-genre-guide) is a special magazine from the makers of the UK’s respected Uncut Magazine. Prog Rock – The Ultimate Genre Guide is a blend of newly written articles, along with classic archive features, looking at the greats of the golden age of UK progressive rock. As the opening piece suggests, the period featured bands and performers retreating from the limelight, be it via elaborate stage shows, or the wearing of fox heads and make-up as a mask. This was all to give prominence to the music – and what music some of it was! Artists covered in some depth across the 124 pages include The Moody Blues, King Crimson, Yes, ELP, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Floyd’s chums The Soft Machine, and of course Pink Floyd, who are also the cover stars. The twelve-page Floyd section is in two parts. First, there’s an extensive look at the band’s music, including how they took some of the complex arrangements on the road – and how these were presented to the audiences. This section is followed by three fascinating articles from 1973 editions of the New Musical Express and Melody Maker weekly newspapers, two of which include extensive interviews with David Gilmour – giving an interesting look at his, and the band’s, thoughts and feelings at the time. There’s also a list of the 40 best UK prog albums so you can see how many are in your own collection, and maybe find titles that you’ll want to track down to explore further. Elsewhere you can find a list of some of the most collectable records of the genre, in case you are sitting on an obscure goldmine! You can pick up this magazine in larger UK stores at the moment, or via the publisher’s online store worldwide (https://nme.backstreetmerch.com/artist/uncut/magazines/prog-rock-ultimate-genre-guide).
