Happy birthday, Guy Pratt!

My Bass And Other Animals (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/my-bass-and-other-animals-guy-pratt-2.html) book, an essential read for any Floyd fan. He has toured his memories in a tour of the same name, and has also developed adaptations of the show. Whatever your interests in music are, the book (as with his solo, stand-up shows) give a mind-boggling and hilarious look at life with various musicians. There’s plenty of detail within the pages of his Floyd life, so well worth taking a look. Many happy returns, Guy, from all of us at Brain Damage!

Pink Floyd – The Later Years 1987-2019 box set

Well, this is one that many have been waiting for. With the release of The Early Years, things looked inevitable and logical for The Later Years to happen, although as with anything, nothing is certain until it happens! Many people have questioned why the Floyd have missed The Middle Years, although one could argue that broadly speaking, much of that ground has been covered by the Immersion sets. There’s also a certain inevitability that there was a lot less material that the band could call on – the beginnings of the band saw them appear on countless TV and radio stations, something that dried up as time went on. They were also a band who in the later years would keep working on an idea through to fruition, rather than have endless abandoned ideas and early versions. We’ve covered the contents elsewhere; suffice it to say, with over 13 hours of unreleased audio and audiovisual material, there’s plenty of new stuff to explore, along with material which has been readdressed and given a 2019 polish. First impressions as you face the box are very strong. A fine job has been done with the presentation of this set – the box and the inner housing reek of quality. Easing the front lid to the side (it is attached, so opens like a very large book) reveals the first of the contents: the three reproduction tour programmes (1987-88, 1989 and 1994) along with a lyric book, all banded together. Under that is the large format, hardback covered photo book which covers the era in question, then there is the memorabilia pouch, which is in something akin to a vinyl album sleeve. In here are repro posters, tickets, passes, and the two 7 vinyl singles – one with Lost For Words (PULSE tour rehearsal edit) and the other, Arnold Layne recorded at the Barrett tribute held at London’s Barbican in 2007. Once these have all been removed, you are down to the final layer – the hardback covered CD/Credits Book which houses the five CDs in the set (numbered 1-5), the six Blu-rays (6-11) and five DVDs (12-16) all housed in individually designed cardboard sleeves. Each of the discs in cardboard sleeves sits in thin plastic sleeves, to protect them from any damage when sliding them in or out of the card. A nice, simple touch but could make a difference in the long term.

Pink Floyd: Delicate Sound of Thunder 2019 Screening – New York City

For many years, fans have been clamouring for a DVD release of Delicate Sound of Thunder. It (finally) arrives on December 13th, in full re-master glory, and boasting improvements that honour its previously under-appreciated legacy. New York City got a sneak-peek of this new version last night (December 4th) at the historic Village East Cinema, as did Chicago and San Francisco, in a trio of one night only, private screenings. It is a well-known fact that when David Gilmour re-launched Pink Floyd with 1987’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason, its promotional tour kick-off was riddled with uncertainties, insecurity, and self-doubt – but ended in record-breaking success. This entire story arc was captured at its bookends in two films: early performances in Atlanta, just a few weeks into the tour, were filmed and would eventually be bootlegged as the Calhoun Tapes; latter performances, recorded at Nassau Coliseum just a few months before the tour ended, landed an official release in the form of Delicate Sound of Thunder. Delicate Sound of Thunder captures a band in top form, rejuvenated, confident, and financially viable. The contrast between the original edit and the new edit of this official release is largely rooted in a spectacular balance between detail and panorama.

Available on all podcast platforms from tomorrow (https://pinkfloyd.lnk.to/Podcast) is The Lost Art Of Conversation, an exclusive look at Pink Floyd’s upcoming box set, The Later Years, which is out on December 13th (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/pink-floyd-the-later-years-1987-2019-mega-box-set-revealed.html). To mark the release of The Later Years, David Gilmour gave BBC Radio’s Matt Everitt unprecedented access with his only interview about the project, the result of which is the four part podcast which will be available weekly on Mondays from 25th November, via your chosen podcast service. Covering the material and stories featured in The Later Years box set, the episodes are split into four key themes from the band’s career from 1987 to the present day, delving into the multi-faceted elements of Pink Floyd’s creative output: The Studio
David talks about the band’s return to the jam sessions in the recording studio and embracing new technology when faced with mountains of new advances in synthesisers and other instruments. Artwork
David tells of his ideas for the band’s artwork including how his simple sketch of a single, empty bed was transformed by the artist Storm Thorgerson into the epic image of hundreds of beds on the cover of A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Live Performances
How the band were preparing for the terrifying prospect of the upcoming tour, only added to by
the enormous pressure facing them whilst rehearsing in a massive aircraft hangar at Toronto
airport. Unreleased New Material from the box set
David talks about the many hours of new and rare material included in The Later Years, his memories jogged by watching footage of the band flying around in promotional airships over Miami beach, watching hapless swimmers surrounded by sharks. You can subscribe to this four-part look at The Later Years via PinkFloyd.lnk.to/Podcast (https://pinkfloyd.lnk.to/Podcast) with the episodes available via all normal podcast platforms. David Gilmour helping Mick Fleetwood celebrate Peter Green at London Palladium

February 25th, 2020, Mick Fleetwood hosts a celebration of the early years of Fleetwood Mac and its co-founder Peter Green at the London Palladium (https://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/mick-fleetwood-tickets/artist/744997). Fleetwood has lined up musicians such as Billy Gibbons, David Gilmour, Jonny Lang, John Mayall, Christine McVie, Zak Starkey, Steven Tyler and Bill Wyman to perform on the night. The concert is a celebration of those early blues days where we all began, and it’s important to recognise the profound impact Peter and the early Fleetwood Mac had on the world of music, Fleetwood said. Peter was my greatest mentor and it gives me such joy to pay tribute to his incredible talent. I am honoured to be sharing the stage with some of the many artists Peter has inspired over the years and who share my great respect for this remarkable musician. Alongside the invited guest musicians, the house band consists of Fleetwood alongside Andy Fairweather Low, Dave Bronze and Ricky Peterson, and the concert will be filmed for eventual release. Money from the event will go to the very deserving Teenage Cancer Trust charity (https://www.teenagecancertrust.org), and tickets go on sale on Friday (November 15th) at 10am GMT via Ticketmaster UK (https://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/mick-fleetwood-tickets/artist/744997). There are a number of tickets available in a Ticketmaster presale, again through that link.

Pink Floyd The Later Years box set – further price drop

Click here for the track listing of the box set (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/miscellaneous-articles/pink-floyd-the-later-years-1987-2019-box-set-track-li-2.html). Some good news for those who have been wondering about ordering it, or for those who already have, through Amazon – they have reduced the price in a number of their stores for the box set. At time of writing this, Amazon UK are currently offering it for £272.76 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07WP7568V/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=1634 creative=19450 creativeASIN=%20%20B07WP7568V linkCode=as2 tag=braindamage-21) which is the lowest price they’ve had for it, so far. Those who have already pre-ordered it through them will automatically pay the lowest price it was advertised for, between when they ordered it, and release date, so there’s no need to cancel your order and re-purchase. Each Amazon store seems to set their own price, so it is worth shopping around, and also note they will send things like this worldwide. For those who need reminding, let’s take a look at what is on offer. Looking at the largest item first, the box set, this consists of 5 CDs in a 60-page hardback book, 6 Blu-rays and 5 DVDs, each in gatefold wallets, 2 7 vinyl singles with material never released, a 40-page hardback photo book, replica tour programmes, and a reproduction memorabilia collection. The box set offers over six hours of previously unheard audio and over seven hours of previously unseen audiovisuals from A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, The Division Bell and The Endless River albums. The CDs take in the 2019 remix of A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, a 2019 remix of Delicate Sound Of Thunder, a disc of live B-sides and unreleased material from The Division Bell, and a new remix of the 1990 Knebworth concert. With AMLOR, the album is presented for the first time in 5.1, and has been updated and remixed by David Gilmour and Andy Jackson. The release of The Later Years project gives an opportunity for a fresh overview of this album. By returning to some of Richard Wright’s keyboard parts and recording new drum tracks with Nick Mason, producers David Gilmour and Bob Ezrin have restored the creative balance between the three Pink Floyd members. The Blu-rays include 5.1 surround sound mixes of the above, as well as The Division Bell, a restored and remixed Delicate Sound of Thunder and includes additional tracks not on the original release, a re-edited PULSE, the full Venice 1989 and Knebworth 1990 concert films (Knebworth includes Great Gig In The Sky), along with music videos, the full range of tour screen films (including the very amusing Money screen film from 1994 with a very retro looking alien complete with ray gun), documentaries, and a new film by Ian Emes for The Endless River album. The DVDs replicate the above material with the exception of the surround sound mixes, which are only on the Blu-rays. The two 7 vinyl singles host two previously unreleased songs – Arnold Layne from the 2007 Syd Barrett tribute concert at the Barbican, and Lost For Words recorded at the rehearsals for the 1994 Earls Court shows. The double vinyl LP and CD highlights packages bring together a flavour of the full set, taking in tracks from Knebworth, The Division Bell sessions, the Momentary Lapse remix, Delicate Sound and more. This has different artwork to the box set. If you missed it, here’s another sneak preview from The Later Years that is now available to hear – the 2019 remix of One Slip, which BD’s Ed Lopez-Reyes has reviewed elsewhere on our site. ORDERING INFORMATION:
You can order the various editions through the following direct links, taking advantage of Amazon’s pre-order price guarantee so you will automatically pay the lowest asking price between placing your order, and release, whilst giving Brain Damage much needed help with running costs without costing you any extra. Gerald Scarfe selling his Pink Floyd archive

RollingStone.com (https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/the-wall-artist-gerald-scarfe-pink-floyd-archive-905710/) that the downsizing of his home was behind the decision. I’d like it to go to a good home, [and] if possible, to be kept together. It could probably get cut up and divided, but my ideal would be to sell it to one collector who keeps it, because it’s got every concept of The Wall from when I first met Roger [Waters]. Small notes, sketches and so forth, which I then developed into bigger sketches. I’ve got tapes; I found whole cans of film the other day, rust-covered cans of 35mm film in my attic, just bits of film that go back to Wish You Were Here. Back in 2017, Gerald sold off a few Wall-era items; ‘The Scream’, the focal piece of artwork for the movie, sold for $1.85million, one of the most expensive non-instrument items in rock history, as RS point out. I didn’t want to let ‘The Scream’ go, but when I saw the price… noted Gerald. The upcoming sale, via the San Francisco Art Exchange, will consist of an incredible 3,000-plus items of sketches, paintings, storyboards, memorabilia, animation cels, stage props, and more. RS notes that Scarfe’s archive collects everything from the five-year stretch that bridges Waters’ doorstep arrival with the demo tapes to the aftermath of The Wall’s Alan Parker-directed 1982 film adaptation: The early hand-drawn sketches, the paintings that feature inside The Wall‘s vinyl gatefold, storyboards, film scripts complete with Scarfe’s illustrations, props from both the extravagant Wall tour and the film. Scarfe’s collection also boasts ‘five years of ephemera’ that ranges from Scarfe’s framed The Wall gold records, figurines, backstage passes, a custom-made Wall tour jacket and some obscure items from the film shoot. Quite a collection, which is sure to have a lot of Floyd fans salivating! It would be great if it could be kept together, and form a new exhibition to complement Their Mortal Remains. We suspect the cost of purchasing the entire thing would be somewhat prohibitive though…one can dream though. Let us know what you’d want to buy from the sale, money no object!
