New issue of Prog Magazine with large David Gilmour features and Nick Mason’s Saucers reviewed

Prog gave us the following rundown of what the issue offers: “Nine years after David Gilmour released his last solo album he is about to release Luck And Strange. That evocative guitar tone, those emotive solos, that distinct voice – all those components that make up a great Gilmour album are all in place. Limited edition LP & CD deluxe formats for David Gilmour’s Luck and Strange album revealed

The details for the limited edition deluxe formats for David Gilmour’s Luck and Strange album, which is released on September 6th 2024, have been revealed and will include bonus tracks and a very special hardback book by Thames & Hudson featuring exclusive photographs taken by Polly Samson during the recording of the album. The deluxe editions will be limited to one run only. Up to now, there’s just been a blurry hint at the editions over at David’s official store, but now full details have been revealed. The deluxe editions come in two versions: vinyl or CD, depending on which format you prefer for the standard audio elements. Second single – Between Two Points – released from David Gilmour’s Luck and Strange

Released today is the second single from David Gilmour’s forthcoming album, Luck And Strange, which is released on September 6th – full details here (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/david-gilmour-luck-and-strange-new-album-announced.html). The song is Between Two Points, which is a cover of a track by the Montgolfier Brothers from their 1999 debut album Seventeen Stars, and features David’s daughter Romany on vocals and harp. David: “I’ve had that song on my playlist since it was released. More recently I mentioned it to one or two people: I assumed that it had been a hit, but no one knew it. I asked Romany to give it a go”. During the live streams that David and family, as the Von Trappeds, performed to a global audience during the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, Romany had sung and played the harp, and David found that their voices mixed in a way that only a family member could. Around that time, David and Romany collaborated on the song Yes, I Have Ghosts, which appears on the CD Blu-Ray versions of Luck and Strange. “I realised that Romany has exactly the right sort of vulnerability and youth for the song. In fact, she was halfway through an essay with a train to catch when we asked her: “OK, I’ll sing it once, put the mic on” and that, said David, is 90 percent of the finished vocal. Mark Tranmer of The Montgolfier Brothers is greatly enamoured with this new version. “David and Romany’s version of our song is a great arrangement and production. Like all the best covers, it diverges from the original but keeps the spirit. Romany’s vocal phrasing of Roger Quigley’s words and the harp playing are both truly beautiful. David Gilmour’s distinctive guitar adds a whole new dimension. I still find it incredible that David and Polly chose to cover our song from all the songs out there.” The video for Between Two Points was shot on location in London and Manchester, with David on guitars and featuring Romany Gilmour on vocals and harp. Gavin Elder who directed the clip said: “Romany performs this song with an extraordinary level of fragility, vulnerability and understated control. David Gilmour adds Los Angeles concert

Just announced is a further date on the US leg of David Gilmour’s upcoming tour – David and his band will be performing at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Los Angeles, California, on Friday, October 25th (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/october-25th-intuit-dome-inglewood-los-angeles-c.html). This latest addition to David’s 2024 Luck and Strange live shows is this show in a venue that is undergoing the final stages of its construction, and it sounds a most interesting building. The architect, AECOM, notes that the “Intuit Dome will be naturally ventilated, fully electric through batteries and solar power with enough on-site energy storage to power a basketball game or concert, and have no net new greenhouse gas emissions.” To qualify for the pre-sale, which starts on June 12th at 10am local time, you need to sign up at DavidGilmour.com (https://www.davidgilmour.com/uspresale) beforehand to get the pre-sale code. David Gilmour announces string of London Royal Albert Hall gigs – only UK concerts

JUST ANNOUNCED: David Gilmour is doing six nights at London’s Royal Albert Hall in October 2024, to coincide with the release of his new album Luck and Strange, which comes out on September 6th (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/david-gilmour-luck-and-strange-new-album-announced.html). Gilmour and his band will be playing the legendary venue on October 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th and 15th, and tickets go on sale next week (full details below). In the recent Uncut interview (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/exclusive-david-gilmour-interview-in-new-uncut-magazine.html) Gilmour talks about the mechanics of sorting out the set list for the tour, which should include the new album, but also selected Pink Floyd songs from over the years. The band is yet to be announced but he notes that “I thought we’d get people who are genuinely creative and give them a little more space. That’s the plan. So we’re going to have some of the younger guys alongside Guy [Pratt] and the Webb Sisters, who sang with Leonard Cohen on his last tours”. It is worth noting that the six shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall are the entirety of his UK performances this time around. We suspect there could be dates in other countries announced in due course. Tickets for these concerts go on sale in two stages. Exclusive David Gilmour interview in new Uncut magazine

Trailing the 12-page article, Uncut note that it has Gilmour discussing the making of the album at length, including the use of a younger team who don’t have the normal Floydian preconceptions or notions of how things are done. As ever with Uncut’s deep dive interviews, it is a fascinating and illuminating piece that is well worth reading, with some great pictures – a number of which were taken during the recent recording sessions. Elsewhere in the magazine, there are features on The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, and more, and there’s a CD of live Can performances from 1973-1977. David Gilmour: Luck and Strange – new album announced!

This afternoon, the months of speculation and rumour come to a close, with the announcement of David Gilmour’s new album, Luck and Strange. It is his first new album in nine years, and those who have been on social media over the last couple of days will have seen movement on his official channels, changing the profile pictures and headers to subtle, rather mysterious images of a figure with their arms out, and rushing water. His official website, too, had undergone a similar change with the same imagery and a sign-up button. The album will be released on September 6th, on Sony Music, on LP, CD, Blu-ray and digital. Deluxe LP and CD boxsets will be announced in the coming weeks. The first track from the album – The Piper’s Call – will be released tomorrow (Thursday, April 25th), following a world exclusive first play on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show. A video for the song will be available to watch from Friday. Full track listings are shown below. Luck and Strange was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour’s first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, best known for his work with ALT-J and Marika Hackman. Of this new working relationship, David says, “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos, and said things like, “Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?” and “Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?”. He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.” The majority of the album’s lyrics have been composed by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s co-writer and collaborator for the past thirty years. Samson says of the lyrical themes covered on Luck and Strange, “It’s written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.” Gilmour elaborates, “We spent a load of time during and after lockdown talking about and thinking about those kind of things.” Polly has also found the experience of working with Charlie Andrew liberating. “He wants to know what the songs are about, he wants everyone who’s playing on them to have the ideas that are in the lyric informing their playing. I have particularly loved it for that reason.” The album features eight new tracks along with a reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ Between Two Points and has artwork and photography by the renowned artist Anton Corbijn. Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt and Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry and Roger Eno on keyboards with string and choral arrangements by Will Gardner. The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 at a jam in a barn at David’s house.
