Us and Them: The Authorised Story of Hipgnosis (https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/178870567X/braindamage-21) takes a close look at arguably the principal music industry designers Hipgnosis. Between the late ’60s and early ’80s, design house Hipgnosis created some of the most iconic and ubiquitous album artwork of all time. Their original lifespan coincided with the golden age of the 12-inch LP, beginning just as the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper made the record sleeve the ultimate blank canvas and ending just as new technology looked set to usurp vinyl. Having originally been approached to design an album cover for their friends Pink Floyd, students Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell and Storm Thorgerson would go on to define the visual identity of rock and roll for the next fifteen years, swiftly gaining international prominence for their famed The Dark Side of the Moon artwork. This paved the way for other major musicians to set foot in the surreal photo-design world of Storm and Po, resulting in seminal Hipgnosis creations for the likes of Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Genesis, Black Sabbath, ELO and Yes. In this authorised account, with access to previously unpublished material and exclusive contributions from David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Peter Gabriel, Roger Waters, Robert Plant and even Aubrey Powell himself, Blake goes behind the scenes of the Hipgnosis partnership to reveal the pioneering ambition and grand vision that led to their success, as well as the clashing egos and artistic differences that undermined it. The Hipgnosis story also offers hitherto-untold insight into some of music’s most legendary bands, as viewed through the prism of the people who shaped their imagery and cultural legacy. With the work of Hipgnosis continuing to be referenced, reproduced and revered worldwide, Us and Them serves as a celebration, a cautionary tale and a compelling human drama, exploring the vital intersection between art and music. Blake is best known in the Floyd community for his excellent book, Pigs Might Fly: The Inside Story Of Pink Floyd (known as Comfortably Numb in the US) which originally came out in 2007, and subsequently updated. Other books worth searching out by Blake include titles covering Queen and Freddie Mercury, Peter Grant (Led Zeppelin’s manager) and The Who. Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets – US/Canada tour 2022 rescheduled dates
With uncertainty over surges of Coronavirus cases, the January/February 2022 tour dates for Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets in the US and Canada were postponed. Rearranging existing tour dates (particularly at the moment with the heavily increased demand from all artists affected) must be incredibly difficult, as the available venues must be the right size for the act, and in a vaguely logical geographical location so bands and crews aren’t zig-zagging their way across a country in an unsustainable way. However, after what we suspect has been a huge amount of work behind the scenes, the revised US and Canadian tour has now been announced. The difficulties in sorting a revised schedule are evident in that, sadly, six gigs have had to be cancelled. These are: Cincinnati which was originally on February 1st, St Louis on February 8th, Memphis on February 9th, Kansas on February 10th, Sacramento on February 23rd and Spokane on February 27th. For all of you holding tickets for these shows, the point of sale should be in touch with a refund. The better news is that these six cancelled gigs, have been replaced by eight new shows (in different locations). There are also three of the existing shows that have moved venues, within the same cities – Washington DC, Phoenix AZ, and Vancouver BC. For rescheduled shows that will be taking place at the same venue, all previously purchased tickets will be valid for the new date. For all shows being moved to new venues, customers will be automatically refunded for their purchase and offered an exclusive presale opportunity for the new venue and date. Further information will be sent directly to the original ticket holders by email shortly, and for any additional ticketing inquiries, fans should reach out to their point of purchase. The sale of tickets for the new shows starts on FRIDAY, MARCH 25th 2022 at 10am (local time), via Ticketmaster (https://www.ticketmaster.com/nick-masons-saucerful-of-secrets-tickets/artist/2602669) and other normal agents. Using our direct links also helps toward the ongoing running costs of this site, and is really appreciated! Nick Mason sits for portrait artists
Back in August, we told you that the eighth series of ‘Portrait Artist of the Year’ would be returning to the UK’s Sky Arts channel and streaming service NOW in August – and yes, there’s relevance to Pink Floyd fans! The series ‘Portrait Artist of the Year’, with hosts Stephen Mangan and Joan Bakewell, brings together a batch of amateur and professional artists as they battle it out to impress expert judges Tai Shan Schierenberg, Kathleen Soriano and Kate Bryan. On Wednesday, December 8th, it is the semi-final, where each heat winner will paint none other than Nick Mason, taking a break from the preparations for the Saucerful Of Secrets tour next year. The three best portraits will see their artists progress to the grand final. The long-running publication Radio Times previewed the episode: ‘A pink background with a gong centrepiece tips us off that the semi-final sitter is drummer and Pink Floyd co-founder Nick Mason. It makes a change for the musician to be foregrounded: âFinally after 50 years!â he says, with a wry smile.
As the competitors brandish gold foil, fabric and polaroid photos, their styles are described variously as âmaster of melancholicâ, âpure imaginationâ and âbonkersâ. It’s a bewitching watch, and the competition is so tight thereâs not a sheet of paper between the artists. âItâs everybodyâs to lose,â judge Kate Bryan says about the usual temptation to tinker⦠A momentary lapse of reason could make the difference. Portrait Artist of the Year will air on Sky Arts, Sky Arts HD, Sky Showcase, Sky Showcase HD, Freeview Channel 11, and streaming service NOW, from 8pm – 9pm on Wednesday, with repeat screenings on December 9th, 11th and 12th, at various times. The following tweet also gives a very quick glimpse of Nick and the gong! Just some out of context @StephenMangan (https://twitter.com/StephenMangan?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw) for your Monday. Are you ready for the semi-final of #PAOTY (https://twitter.com/hashtag/PAOTY?src=hash ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)?!
