David Gilmour on BBC TV’s Later…With Jools Holland

Filmed around the time of his highly acclaimed Royal Albert Hall shows, and before departing for his nine shows in Los Angeles and New York City, David Gilmour’s appearance (with his band) on the BBC series Later…With Jools Holland has now been detailed. It is the third episode (of six) from series 65 of the show, which always features a variety of artists and musical styles. Airing on the UK’s BBC Two on Saturday, November 2nd at 10:25pm, it will then be available to view on the BBC’s iPlayer service through this link (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0024s5f). From the programme notes: “Jools welcomes to the show legendary singer, songwriter and guitarist David Gilmour to perform a couple of songs from his album Luck and Strange, including the track Between Two Points; Australian punk rockers Amyl and the Sniffers with a couple of tracks from their album Cartoon Darkness; 80s icons The The with a song from their album Ensoulment; singer-songwriter Dhruv with the track Tragedy from his debut album, Private Blizzard; and South African hip-hop tour de force Moonchild Sanelly with her song Do My Dance from her album Full Moon.”

David Gilmour Luck and Strange tour – next stop, California!

Well, to use film terminology, that’s a wrap – for now, anyway! David Gilmour’s fourteen nights in three European cities – Brighton, Rome and London – have just come to a triumphant conclusion, with audiences truly thrilled by the sonic and visual feast served up by David and his band. The show has matured well over the month since the first Brighton shows, which were a great tour opener for the lucky 1,500 at each of the two performances there, with the subsequent Rome open air concerts being truly special, and then the Royal Albert Hall gigs in London which will live long in everyone’s memories. Next for David and the gang is an appearance on the BBC TV series, Later…With Jools Holland (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00248kd). We hear possibly that David will be on this week’s show, although looking on the BBC website at the episode guide (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00248kd), it doesn’t include his name amongst the guests performing. From pictures that Polly Samson and others have shared on their social media, they have already filmed their song selection, it seems at Alexandra Palace in London. Then, the US dates start, with three locations selected, taking in the West and East coasts – the newly opened and quite high tech Intuit Dome in LA on October 25th (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/october-25th-intuit-dome-inglewood-los-angeles-c.html), the legendary Hollywood Bowl on October 29th – 31st (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/october-29th-hollywood-bowl-hollywood-los-angeles-c.html), and concluding at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on November 4th – 6th and 9th – 10th (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/november-4th-madison-square-garden-new-york-city-n.html). Should all be superb shows, and limited tickets are still available if you are quick. We’ve been so grateful for all the reviews, comments and pictures submitted for the shows that have taken place, and are working through the final ones to get them on the site too. Thanks to Kevan Porter for this picture from last night’s show – his review and many more great shots are on the relevant show page in the David Gilmour 2024 section (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/index.php). People love reading others’ thoughts on the shows, whether or not they were fortunate enough to have attended themselves, and seeing pictures taken from all different aspects of the venues. If you haven’t yet submitted something and still want to – or are going to any of the US shows and want to share with the Floyd community – do please get in touch at the normal email address of Matt@Brain-Damage.co.uk. Thank you, everyone!

Nick Mason appears on new episode of motoring podcast

With Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets getting ready to entertain again in the UK and Europe this summer, starting on June 11th in Stoke, England, Nick has taken time out of early preparations to appear on the Fuelling Around podcast. The 45-minute episode of the automotive show where he talked about music, motors and his epic car collection, is typically entertaining. “I thought I’d retired about 20 years ago. I think my doctor said: ‘If you haven’t grown out of showing off by the time you’re 70, you’re probably incurable’. It’s really terrific when you do get a younger fanbase. Sometimes they bring their old granny along – the clatter of zimmer-frames in the mosh pit is something to
watch out for.” In the podcast, he noted that “we play Floyd songs because first of all it was a repertoire which I could just about remember, which helped. The other thing was that feeling that we wanted to capture the atmosphere of the early music. That meant it actually freed us up a bit because we didn’t have to play Comfortably Numb exactly as it was played on the record. We were playing the earlier songs where it was much more about the atmosphere that went with it rather than the accuracy. “It wasn’t me who formed the band. It was initially Lee’s suggestion and the rest of the band sort of formed itself around us. We certainly didn’t do anything as crude as hold any sort of tests or auditions. It was actually, in a way, exactly how bands always used to be put together, which was a few like-minded people getting together and saying ‘well let’s give it a go’. And that’s exactly what we did.” You can enjoy the entire episode here:
