Polly Samson & David Gilmour – A Theatre For Dreamers book & music events cancelled

Exclusive Gilmour 4 track CD with paperback of Polly Samson’s “…Dreamers” novel

Most of you will be aware of A Theatre for Dreamers, Polly Samson’s most recent bestselling novel, which was a 2020 book of the year in The Times and Sunday Times, The Telegraph, The Daily Mail and Spectator. To accompany the book, David Gilmour created some new music, principally for the audiobook version of A Theatre For Dreamers. One song in particular, Yes, I Have Ghosts, received a standalone, 7″ single release for Record Store Day last year. Just announced is the paperback edition, with the Rough Trade record store chain offering an exclusive edition at roughtrade.com/gb/polly-samson/a-theatre-for-dreamers (https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/polly-samson/a-theatre-for-dreamers). Ordered through them, the book comes with an exclusive bonus CD, featuring four songs inspired by the book. Initial orders had the bonus of the CD being signed by Samson and Gilmour, but those quickly sold out. They are now offering a few more signed CDs, so don’t delay if you fancy one – and make sure you select the “Paperback+” option which is the signed version, if it is there when you are ordering! The four tracks were written by Samson and Gilmour, and performed by Gilmour and the couple’s daughter Romany. Songs 2, 3 and 4 are instrumentals. CD Track Listing: Yes, I Have Ghosts
Tell The Truth
Astral Dust
Kokineli We don’t know how limited this edition is yet, nor if the first song, Yes, I Have Ghosts, is a different version to what has been released already. We do suspect this will sell very quickly, so suggest you get your orders in now (https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/polly-samson/a-theatre-for-dreamers)! Please note that this CD isn’t being offered with the paperback book through other retailers – it’s just Rough Trade.

A very happy birthday to David Gilmour

Our very best wishes, and many happy returns, to David Gilmour who is celebrating his 75th birthday today (March 6th)! Born and raised in Cambridge, David became involved with various bands in the area, principally Jokers Wild who were a popular draw when they played, before joining Pink Floyd in 1968. More recent years have seen David concentrating on his solo career, and helping out chums on their musical projects on an ad hoc basis. In 2019, some 120+ of David’s guitars were auctioned, raising $21.5 million (including some record-breaking amounts for individual instruments) which went to the environmental charity ClientEarth (https://clientearth.org). He also appeared as a guest performer at the Richard Thompson 70th Birthday Concert (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/david-gilmour-guest-appearance-at-richard-thompson-70th-birthday-co.html), playing Dimming Of The Day and Fat Old Sun, and joining the encore. Last year, on February 25th, shortly before all activity stopped around the world due to Coronavirus, David joined the stellar bill for the Mick Fleetwood Friends Celebrate The Music of Peter Green and The Early Years of Fleetwood Mac (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mick-fleetwood-friends-concert-box-set-available-to-orde.html) concert at London's Palladium, which is being released as a 4LP, 2CD, Blu-ray and book box set on April 30th this year (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mick-fleetwood-friends-concert-box-set-available-to-orde.html). The concert was in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust charity (https://teenagecancertrust.org). Finally, scheduled for the end of June (Covid restriction permitting, of course), David is joining his wife Polly Samson for three special evenings to mark the release of her new book, A Theatre For Dreamers, which will see David performing a few songs (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/polly-samson-and-david-gilmour-a-theatre-for-dreamers-book-and-music-e.html). Tickets for these three events, in Manchester, Birmingham, and London, are available now (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/polly-samson-and-david-gilmour-a-theatre-for-dreamers-book-and-music-e.html).It just remains for us to wish David a very happy day! Reminder: David Gilmour’s Yes, I Have Ghosts 7″ out today

A reminder, should you need it – today is Black Friday Record Store Day, and for those in the UK, retailers have in the last few minutes put all the special releases for this event available to purchase online! Included in this special RSD for Black Friday (the final Friday in November), is a 7″ vinyl release from Sony Legacy of “Yes, I Have Ghosts”, the first new song from David Gilmour in five years which features his daughter Romany on harp and vocals. The inspiration for the track was Polly Samson’s novel A Theatre for Dreamers, a Sunday Times bestseller about an idyllic poet/musician/artist community in 1960s Greece. An alternate version of the song is on the B-side. As with the other RSD 2020 releases, it is a limited edition: generally the RSD releases are pressed up as just a couple of thousand or so worldwide. We understand that there are 5,000 of David’s single available to snap up from today. Some of you may also be interested in the 12″ single of The Green Manalishi, recorded at the Mick Fleetwood and Friends celebration of Peter Green, which David appeared at (although doesn’t appear on this particular song). And, as we’ve mentioned previously, go to RecordStoreDay.com (https://www.recordstoreday.com) for more details of participating stores near you. A reminder that it will ONLY be these stores selling these releases; first come, first served, and only one copy per customer.

December 2020 issue of Italian/English Floyd fanzine Heyou now available

Just published is the latest issue (number 35 – cover date December 2020) of the Pink Floyd fanzine Heyou run by our friends over at the Italian website of the same name. The 52-page dual language magazine (in Italian and English), which is published every six months or so, catches up with things in the Floyd world. The magazine has a range of subjects as its major focuses, despite 2020 being a year when plans have changed dramatically for many people – musicians in particular, with Roger and Nick both having planned to be touring with their respective bands. The first feature looks at the collaboration between Polly Samson and David Gilmour – in particular the audiobook of A Theatre For Dreamers and David’s single, Yes, I Have Ghosts. This is followed by a lengthy review by The Second Disc of Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets: Live At The Roundhouse, which is (quite rightly) very enthusiastic about the release. There’s a detailed and fascinating look at the making of The Later Years box set, via an article from somethingelsereviews.com, which includes interviews with Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, Damon Iddins, and Andy Jackson. A review of the Roger Waters Us + Them precedes the first part of a detailed article looking at the initial run of Wall concerts in 1980, and what happened during the shows. Finally, there’s a look at two of the Floyd related Record Store Day 2020 releases – Roger’s 1990 Berlin gig on vinyl, and the Floyd’s 7″ single of Arnold Layne recorded at the Syd Barrett tribute concert at London’s Barbican in 2007. More details of the Heyou fanzine can be found at www.heyou.it/fsubscrbd.html (http://www.heyou.it/fsubscrbd.html), where you can get individual copies, and subscription enquiries (four issues costing 35 euros within Europe, and 45 euros outside Europe) should go to durgaheyou@libero.it (mailto:durgaheyou@libero.it?subject=Heyou%20enquiry%20from%20BD%20visitor) – make sure you mention Brain Damage when you write!

David Gilmour’s Yes, I Have Ghosts in 2020 Black Friday Record Store Day

Just when you thought the three Record Store Days this year kept you busy with checking out what releases were coming out on the different days (or “drops”), another RSD is on its way on 27th November. The normal RSD was split, of course, due to Covid-19 (something that has affected pretty much all aspects of life). Releases this year have included the 12″ single from Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets, the 7″ from Pink Floyd, and the 1990 Roger Waters Berlin gig on clear vinyl. Occasionally there’s what is normally a second RSD for Black Friday (the final Friday in November), and this has now been confirmed. Whilst exact details of everything to be included are still to be confirmed, one thing that IS included, is a 7″ vinyl release from Sony Legacy of “Yes, I Have Ghosts”, the first new song from David Gilmour in five years which features his daughter Romany on harp and vocals. The inspiration for the track was Polly Samson’s novel A Theatre for Dreamers, a Sunday Times bestseller about an idyllic poet/musician/artist community in 1960s Greece. As with the other RSD 2020 releases, it is a limited edition: generally the RSD releases are pressed up as just a couple of thousand or so worldwide. We understand that there are going to be 5,000 of David’s single available to snap up on the day. And, as we’ve mentioned previously, go to RecordStoreDay.com (https://www.recordstoreday.com) for more details of participating stores near you. A reminder that it will ONLY be these stores selling these releases; the stores themselves can’t sell them online – the record will become available for customers coming through the door of the store from the morning of the 27th (and not before), in limited quantities – first come, first served, and only one copy per customer. If copies remain (this year, normally after 6pm on the day), they may put them for sale online (and of course, there’ll also be copies on eBay inevitably…).

Polly Samson: “A Theatre for Dreamers” (London: Bloomsbury, 2020)

In the latest of our BD visitor contributions, our good friend Dr Kevin De Ornellas, who is Lecturer in English Renaissance Literature, at the School of Arts and Humanities of Ulster University, takes a detailed look at A Theatre for Dreamers, the new book from Polly Samson. The audiobook for this expands on the lockdown broadcasts Polly and her husband, David Gilmour, have done, with new music created by David specifically for the project. Many of you have bought, or are thinking of buying, Polly's book, and indeed some of you will have got a copy when you bought a ticket for the (delayed) evenings hosted by Polly and David, which are also due to include some of the new music. For those curious, Kevin kindly expands on what he found upon reading the book…If you are looking for an easy read, a summer page-turner, this is not it. A Theatre for Dreamers is a difficult book, a book that is highly allusive and sometimes ethereal in quality. Although the basic story is very simple – a woman remembers being on Hydra with a bunch of creative types in 1960 as she coincidentally deals with revelations about her mother – the novel is layered with feeling and complex memory. The plot is not always linear – most of the novel describes memories of 1960 but we start off in 2016 before we go back to the late 1950s and by the end we have stopped off at Paddington Station in 1970 and returned again to the island some decades later. This structure makes sense: memories do not come to us in a neat, linear way so there is no need for this memory-fixated novel to be conveyed in a strictly linear trajectory. There is a large cast of characters: although we see everything from the self-consciously subjective eyes of Erica, the first-person narrator, she is greedy for experience and observation of varied humanity – put simply, she is interested in lots of people. Getting to know these people takes a lot of effort: for example, on page 215 alone we have to engage with the following named characters: Francine, Charmian, Leonard, Marianne, Jimmy, Bobby, Robyn, Bim, Axel, Angela, Marianne, Demitri, Charlie and Edie. Engaging with this novel necessitates commitment. Some of these characters are very significant to the novel as a whole; some are more incidental. It is worth making the effort because this is an intellectually substantial as well as emotive novel.
