The end of the year – Pink Floyd related activities wrap-up
With the end of the year looming, it’s a good time to look back at what 2024 gave us. There’s been a lot of different releases that we’ve all experienced over the months, and it is interesting to look back at what there’s been in a busy year. In March there was the Mark Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes release of Going Home (Theme From Local Hero), which included David Gilmour amongst around 60 musicians. April saw the lovely looking crystal clear vinyl of The Dark Side Of The Moon, with UV artwork. Later that month, Roger Waters released a picture disc of his Redux version of TDSOTM as part of Record Store Day. May brought us the Animals 2018 Remix on Blu-ray and on digital platforms, bringing the 1977 album to life in multi channel gloriousness. This was presented with new artwork from the launch of the Animals 2018 remix, showing how Battersea Power Station is used these days for such promotions. June saw the start of the 35-date Set The Controls tour from Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets, thrilling audiences in the UK and Europe, and getting better and better as a band. Let’s hope that there’s more next year! The DVD, Blu-ray and digital release of Have You Got It Yet? The Story Of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd was released in July, following the 2023 cinema screenings. Of course, in September, we saw the release of the hotly anticipated Luck And Strange from David Gilmour, which was accompanied from later that month with live shows in Brighton and London, England, Rome, Italy, Los Angeles and New York, USA. Dates in Rome were filmed with the aim to release at some point, and once we have details of that, we’ll let you know! David also contributed a guitar solo for Ice-T’s band Body Count on their cover version of Comfortably Numb (a very unexpected collaboration!). David’s team have also edited together footage from each city of the tour to construct a live version of The Piper’s Call, released as a pre-Christmas treat. Finally, to conclude the year, there’s been another release of a bunch of live Pink Floyd concerts to be found on platforms such as Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/artist/0k17h0D3J5VfsdmQ1iZtE9?si=jRkN8zT1TqWovrf0sObizw) for a limited period. There’s thirteen gigs in total, all from 1974, and definitely worth checking out…
New David Gilmour interview online
Just published on YouTube is a new interview with David Gilmour, conducted by Rick Beato during the Madison Square Garden concerts in New York City. The nearly hour-long chat with David finds him in expansive mood, explaining how the new album, Luck and Strange, came together and he also talks about the recent concerts.
David Gilmour Luck and Strange tour – next stop, California!
Well, to use film terminology, that’s a wrap – for now, anyway! David Gilmour’s fourteen nights in three European cities – Brighton, Rome and London – have just come to a triumphant conclusion, with audiences truly thrilled by the sonic and visual feast served up by David and his band. The show has matured well over the month since the first Brighton shows, which were a great tour opener for the lucky 1,500 at each of the two performances there, with the subsequent Rome open air concerts being truly special, and then the Royal Albert Hall gigs in London which will live long in everyone’s memories. Next for David and the gang is an appearance on the BBC TV series, Later…With Jools Holland (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00248kd). We hear possibly that David will be on this week’s show, although looking on the BBC website at the episode guide (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00248kd), it doesn’t include his name amongst the guests performing. From pictures that Polly Samson and others have shared on their social media, they have already filmed their song selection, it seems at Alexandra Palace in London. Then, the US dates start, with three locations selected, taking in the West and East coasts – the newly opened and quite high tech Intuit Dome in LA on October 25th (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/october-25th-intuit-dome-inglewood-los-angeles-c.html), the legendary Hollywood Bowl on October 29th – 31st (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/october-29th-hollywood-bowl-hollywood-los-angeles-c.html), and concluding at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on November 4th – 6th and 9th – 10th (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/november-4th-madison-square-garden-new-york-city-n.html). Should all be superb shows, and limited tickets are still available if you are quick. We’ve been so grateful for all the reviews, comments and pictures submitted for the shows that have taken place, and are working through the final ones to get them on the site too. Thanks to Kevan Porter for this picture from last night’s show – his review and many more great shots are on the relevant show page in the David Gilmour 2024 section (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/index.php). People love reading others’ thoughts on the shows, whether or not they were fortunate enough to have attended themselves, and seeing pictures taken from all different aspects of the venues. If you haven’t yet submitted something and still want to – or are going to any of the US shows and want to share with the Floyd community – do please get in touch at the normal email address of Matt@Brain-Damage.co.uk. Thank you, everyone!
David Gilmour opens Royal Albert Hall, London, shows to much acclaim
Well, last night saw the start of the six concerts that David Gilmour and his band are playing at London’s Royal Albert Hall (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/october-9th-royal-albert-hall-london-en.html). These follow the six nights in Rome, Italy, which we have covered on the relevant tour pages, and will be doing so again on the London tour pages as the shows take place. The Royal Albert Hall has long been a favourite of David’s, so it should be a good place to see him play in again. This was proved with the opening show last night for which we’ve already had some pictures and comments through from people who attended, and were thrilled by what they witnessed! As ever, we will do our best to minimise any spoilers unless you go further down each of the concert pages – the set list is always hidden for obvious sight, and comments about each show will be below that, along with pictures kindly submitted. We’ve included one here of a recognisable shadow playing on the rear of the Royal Albert Hall’s seating area, courtesy of David Gaylor, which we figured didn’t really spoil anything in particular of the show. The other picture, showing the Luck and Strange Man above one of the Royal Albert Hall entrances, was kindly sent by Chris Leith. For those interested, there were no major differences with the merchandise on offer – the normal range of t-shirts, hoodies and other accessories including tour programme. Sometimes for the Royal Albert Hall, there’s been a special poster, but all there is are the t-shirts and hoodies marked as from the London shows (as seen in the previous shows in Brighton and Rome). We hear though that the merchandise stall was swamped with people snapping things up eagerly so would suggest those who want to get something to commemorate the show, should buy before the concert, and not after, to reduce the chance of disappointment. Obviously, if you go to any of these shows (or indeed, any others between now and when the tour wraps up next month at New York City’s Madison Square Garden) and would like to share your thoughts and/or pictures with the Floyd community, do please get in touch! Thank you.
David Gilmour announces two rehearsal concerts in Brighton
Following the release of David Gilmour’s Luck and Strange, his critically acclaimed first new album in nine years, this week, has been an announcement which reminds us of 2015. Today, Gilmour has announced two very special rehearsal performances at the Brighton Centre on the south coast of England, on September 20th (Evening) (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/september-20th-brighton-centre-brighton-en.html) and 21st (Matinee) (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/september-21st-brighton-centre-brighton-en.html). Each show will be limited to just 1500 people. Many of you will remember that in 2015, Gilmour performed what was called a “preview show” at the same venue, which had been used for production rehearsals, and the Brighton Centre obviously worked well as a facility to get the show into its final shape, hence these newly announced concerts. Tickets for the shows are £30, and to be in with a chance to get them, fans will need to have
purchased a copy of Luck and Strange from the official David Gilmour UK store (https://store-uk.davidgilmour.com) by 8am, Monday, September 16th. This will give the chance for first access to the available tickets. Those who have already ordered from the store will also be included. Visit that website to get full details of terms and conditions of the ticketing process. The shows will offer an exclusive preview of David’s forthcoming live performances in Rome, London, Los Angeles, and New York.

David Gilmour announces six nights of concerts in Rome, Italy
official David Gilmour Italian Album Store (https://DavidGilmour.lnk.to/storeIT) (including those who have already done so), with the general sale of tickets beginning on Friday, May 17th via this link at Ticketone.it (https://www.ticketone.it/en/artist/david-gilmour/) Other than the store presale, there is a Virgin Radio Presale at this link (https://www.ticketone.it/virginradio), from May 15th at 9am until May 16th at 11:59pm. There’s also a Sonyo Presale running at the same time as the Virgin Radio Presale. As with the Royal Albert Hall tickets, we suspect these shows – the only ones that will be performed in mainland Europe – will be extremely popular. The capacity of the venue should be higher than the London venue, so hopefully plenty of fans will be able to secure tickets.
David Gilmour announces string of London Royal Albert Hall gigs – only UK concerts
JUST ANNOUNCED: David Gilmour is doing six nights at London’s Royal Albert Hall in October 2024, to coincide with the release of his new album Luck and Strange, which comes out on September 6th (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/david-gilmour-luck-and-strange-new-album-announced.html). Gilmour and his band will be playing the legendary venue on October 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th and 15th, and tickets go on sale next week (full details below). In the recent Uncut interview (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/exclusive-david-gilmour-interview-in-new-uncut-magazine.html) Gilmour talks about the mechanics of sorting out the set list for the tour, which should include the new album, but also selected Pink Floyd songs from over the years. The band is yet to be announced but he notes that “I thought we’d get people who are genuinely creative and give them a little more space. That’s the plan. So we’re going to have some of the younger guys alongside Guy [Pratt] and the Webb Sisters, who sang with Leonard Cohen on his last tours”. It is worth noting that the six shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall are the entirety of his UK performances this time around. We suspect there could be dates in other countries announced in due course. Tickets for these concerts go on sale in two stages. Fans in the UK/Ireland pre-ordering Luck and Strange from the official David Gilmour UK Album Store (https://davidgilmour.com/rah) will get first access to tickets, via an exclusive ticket pre-sale on Thursday 9th May through Ticketmaster UK (https://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/david-gilmour-tickets/artist/769001). If you have, or intend to, order from elsewhere, there IS, however, a “No purchase necessary” option you can select at David’s store to get the pre-sale code without having to cancel your existing order. The window to qualify for the pre-sale ends at 3pm UK on Wednesday, May 8th, with all existing pre-orders from the official David Gilmour UK Album Store also eligible. Pre-sale codes will be sent out later that day. Tickets will then go on general sale at 10am UK on Friday, May 10th, through this link at Ticketmaster UK (https://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/david-gilmour-tickets/artist/769001). We are sure that demand will be high for these special concerts.
