Very rare Syd Barrett gig poster in upcoming auction
Warren Dosanjh, a school friend of Syd Barrett, and the manager of the early Barrett band Those Without, is selling some of his framed and glazed posters and other ephemera through the Cambridge based auction house Cheffins. Cheffins Auctions were the people who sold Barrett’s possessions after his death, on behalf of his family, so it is no real surprise they are being used again. The auction is being held this Thursday, October 26th, under the sale title Art and Design October 2023. You can view the details of each of the lots, on page 50-51 of Cheffins catalogue for this auction, which can be viewed through this link (https://edition.pagesuite.com/html5/reader/production/default.aspx?pubname=&edid=0c6fef7f-3de9-410d-be7e-077c9c75883b) or by clicking the thumbnail of the auction pages below: Most of the items are from exhibitions to do with Syd, held after his death. The first is a City Wakes poster (from the Syd celebration in Cambridge) signed by Storm Thorgerson and Rosemary Breen (Syd’s sister), together with assorted ephemera relating to the exhibition, a facsimile poster of the BBC Cambridgeshire and Anglia Ruskin University invitation to the unveiling of a Blue Plaque in memory of Syd; a Royal Mail Syd Barrett first day cover, numbered 658 of 3000; a copy of Melody Maker from August 1967 featuring Syd on the cover and other Syd related ephemera. There’s a VIP invitation poster for ‘Syd Barrett: A Celebration’ at the Cambridge Corn Exchange from October 2016 , featuring an unveiling of public commemorative art followed by a celebratory concert and music from Men on the Border together with the Sandviken Symphony Orchestra and lights by Peter Wynne-Willson, interpreting the music of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd, at the venue where Barrett performed his last ever concert in 1972. There’s a Royal Mail limited edition, numbered giclée print of the Wish You Were Here stamp, and a poster from the Their Mortal Remains exhibition in Rome, Italy. The most unusual lot though is from a gig at the Cambridge Corn Exchange that Syd played in with a support band, The Last Minute Put Together Boogie Band. This comes with a live recording CD of the band which had Syd on guitar, and a CD of Hawkwind on the same evening. Potentially this is the only remaining example of this poster in existence. We suspect the estimate of £500-1000 will be shown to be very pessimistic…
Danish celebration for Roger Waters’ 80th birthday
Roger Waters will be turning 80 on September 6th. Still incredibly active, Waters has a huge number of fans and advocates in Denmark. Three of them are performing on Waters’ birthday to celebrate his words, music and activism on a night that combines a one-hour lecture with a 90-minute-long acoustic concert. Thomas Ulrik Larsen, esteemed songwriter, musician, journalist and lecturer, and friend of Brain Damage, opens the program with a talk about Roger Waters’ background, the Pink Floyd years, solo career and Waters’ current standing in today’s musical and political climate. After the lecture Thomas Ulrik Larsen (on vocals and guitar) will be joined by multi-instrumentalist Anders Haarh and singer/pianist Stine Liebman. The trio goes by the name Shrink Freud and plays acoustic interpretations of Roger Waters’ best songs from his Floyd years as well as from his solo albums â both classics and rarities. The venue is Kulturium, which is just south of Copenhagen, and the admission fee is a modest 80 Danish kroner (the equivalent of eight British Pounds). You can get your tickets for the birthday bash at Kulturium.dk (https://kulturium.dk/kalender/event/show/fdselsdagsforedrag-om-pink-floyd.html).

Nick Mason made honorary citizen of Pompei!
In a special ceremony held at the Commune di Pompei – the city hall – Nick Mason was this afternoon made an honorary citizen of the city! Heres’s his acceptance video, and a selection of photos from the event, which was held prior to this evening’s Saucerful Of Secrets concert at the Teatro Grande (Grand Theatre) in the ruins of Pompeii. Many congratulations on the award, Nick!
Weather stops Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets gig in Vicenza, Italy
Last night, show four of the 2023 Echoes Tour in Europe saw Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets back in Italy, which like much of the central band of Europe has been suffering with extreme weather, with temperatures breaking records in many places. As you’ll see from the below, sadly a bad storm came in shortly before the band were due on stage in the Piazza dei Signori in Vicenza, forcing organisers to evacuate the city square where the concert was to be held, for everyone’s safety.
Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets 2023 Echoes Tour starts tonight!
Well, the day is now here! Tonight, in Loreley, Germany, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets start their 2023 Echoes Tour. They will be taking in a number of European countries this month (July) – Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and no less than six shows in Italy, including a return for Nick to the ancient ruins of Pompeii for a concert to be held in the Teatro Grande (after he receives an honorary citizenship from the mayor of Pompei on the day of the concert – the same honour that David Gilmour received back in July 2016 when he played in the ruins located in the city). Then, in September, they will be playing six shows in Australia. As those of you who were fortunate enough to have seen the band on their quite extensive 2022 Echoes Tour, which took in shows in the UK, Europe, the US and Canada, presenting another incredible set list and upgraded staging to thrilled audiences across the board. One of many highlights of the set was of course the piece that the tour is named after – Echoes – each night a tour de force which is sure to be replicated again this year. As ever, we’d love to hear your thoughts about any of the concerts you might be going to, as we’d love to add your comments, reviews, pictures, or whatever else you kindly share with us, onto the respective show pages elsewhere on this site within the Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets 2023 tour zone (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2023/index.php). Roger Waters concludes current leg of tour; bee makes surprise appearance
Last night, in the English city of Manchester, Roger Waters, his band and crew, concluded the current leg of his This Is Not A Drill tour, which also looks like it has seen the end of the use of the “in the round” staging.. Show 40 of the 2023 tour – this leg, visiting various locations in Portugal, Italy, Spain, Germany, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Hungary, Switzerland, France, Belgium, Czech Republic, Scotland and England – saw Roger back in the Arena in Manchester which he has played in previous years, and which in 2017 was subjected to the atrocity of an Ariana Grande concert, full of young people, being bombed. There is significance in mentioning that fact – the worker bee has long been the symbol of the city, its heritage built on industry, but the bombing gave the bee extra significance as it represented the indomitable spirit of the locals after the attack, rebuilding and standing strong. In a totally unexpected moment, Roger was performing The Bar during the show, and he realised that (somehow) a bee was in the arena, and had rested on his hand as he was playing piano! He remarked: “That is unbelievable. That has been on my hand for the whole last chorus.” Our thanks to those who have contributed their thoughts about the shows so far, and we’re still adding some recent reviews and pictures to the show pages. If you want to share your thoughts, or pictures, and haven’t done so yet, please get in touch. We really love to see all your contributions! As it stands, the next show on the 2023 Roger Waters This Is Not A Drill tour (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2023-tour-zone/index.php) is on October 24th in Brasilia, Brazil, as he starts the South American leg. If you are going to any of these, we hope you enjoy them and would obviously love to see your pictures and reviews of the shows.
