Brainstorms: A Great Gig in the Sky seeking US venue for latest staging

During the summer, Frameless, a 30,000 square-foot venue in the heart of London, hosted Brainstorms: A Great Gig In The Sky. The show blended music and art with the latest neuroscience and technology, in an exploration of how our minds respond to music. The immersive experience came from Brainstorms, a joint venture between San Francisco-based creative studio Pollen Music Group and Richard Wright Music Limited, bringing to life the results of the Brainstorms research project that took place last autumn. Driven by a mutual admiration for the beautiful and haunting simplicity of Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright’s songwriting, the Brainstorms team themed the experience around the concept behind the iconic Pink Floyd track The Great Gig in the Sky. Visitors travelled through the four main Frameless galleries which each featured stunning sky-themed creative visualisations of the human brain’s response to music, from mesmerising cloud formations and mystical auroras to starling murmurations and an eclipse. The whole experience was designed to communicate how people respond to music, while enhancing the listening experience by enveloping individuals inside the songs like never before. Gala Wright, curator and Artistic director at Brainstorms and daughter of Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright, said, “The visual representation of brain data provides an accessible and intuitive way to see how a piece of music can be a deeply personal yet also powerfully shared experience. Questioning how this is true for my father’s compositions is a key motivation for me bringing this concept to life with Pollen. The added benefit of bringing awareness to his musicality through the Brainstorms project serves to augment his legacy.” To create the visuals for the centrepiece experience, 125 individuals had their brain activity recorded while listening in unparalleled clarity and depth through immersive sound Dolby Atmos to Pink Floyd’s The Great Gig in the Sky from The Dark Side of the Moon. The instrumental track, which was the creation of Richard Wright, features Clare Torry’s voice as an instrument in place of lyrics so was deemed a perfect piece for the largest data collection of its kind. The EEG readings of brain activity, which was showcased within the experience, were captured at Dolby by the neuroscience experts within the Pollen Music Group team and reflect the participant’s excitement, interest, relaxation and stress felt whilst listening to the track. Now, Pollen Music Group are aiming to bring this groundbreaking venture to the US and is seeking partnerships with immersive venues and networking organizations interested in evolving the show for its US debut. “We’re proud to have successfully executed a high-level concept from inception to delivery that was enormously well-received at one of the most prestigious immersive venues in the world,” said Richard Warp, Chief Technology Officer at Pollen. “We’re excited to partner with visionary venues in the US who can help us realize the full potential of this unique experience.” US-based immersive experience venues interested in hosting Brainstorms in their location can reach out to Pollen directly at partners@pollenmusicgroup.com. Once a suitable venue has been arranged, we will update you with dates, tickets and so on, so those in the US can also experience this event.

Just announced: June 7th sees the launch of Brainstorms: A Great Gig in the Sky, presented by the UK’s largest immersive art experience Frameless. A complete takeover of the iconic, 30,000 square-feet venue in the heart of Marble Arch, London, this new show blends music and art with the latest neuroscience and technology, in an exploration of how our minds respond to music. The fascinating sounding immersive experience, running on Friday and Saturday evenings in June 2024 for over 18s only, comes from Brainstorms, a joint venture between San Francisco-based creative studio Pollen Music Group and Richard Wright Music Limited. It brings to life the results of the Brainstorms research project that took place last autumn. Driven by a mutual admiration for the beautiful and haunting simplicity of Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright’s songwriting, the Brainstorms team has themed the experience around the concept behind the iconic Pink Floyd track The Great Gig in the Sky. Visitors will travel through the four main Frameless galleries which each feature stunning sky-themed creative visualisations of the human brain’s response to music, from mesmerising cloud formations and mystical auroras to starling murmurations and an eclipse. The added benefit of bringing awareness to his musicality through the Brainstorms project serves to augment his legacy.” To create the visuals for the centrepiece experience, 125 individuals had their brain activity recorded while listening in unparalleled clarity and depth through immersive sound Dolby Atmos to 1973 Pink Floyd classic, ‘The Great Gig in the Sky’ from the highly celebrated album ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’. The instrumental track, which was the creation of Richard Wright, features Clare Torry’s voice as an instrument in place of lyrics so was deemed a perfect piece for the largest data collection of its kind. The EEG readings of brain activity, which will be showcased within the experience, were captured at Dolby by the neuroscience experts within the Pollen Music Group team and reflect the participant’s excitement, interest, relaxation and stress felt whilst listening to the track. A strictly limited number of VIP places will be available to book a unique 15-minute EEG brain capture experience, powered by technology provided by AMD and Emotiv, where they will feel more from the music than ever before as they go on an intense and emotional journey as they listen to five minutes of The Dark Side of the Moon in immersive sound Dolby Atmos via headphones. Participants will then be able to see their brain activity visualised into stunning large-scale cloud formations, projected into Frameless’ re-imagined ‘Cloud’ Gallery. Each participant will also receive a personalised memento based on their individual brain’s reaction to the piece. Tickets to Brainstorms: A Great Gig in the Sky are priced from £30 and have gone on sale this morning. Pink Floyd Animals 2018 Remix – Dolby Atmos Blu-ray coming

Coming on May 17th, on Blu-ray and compatible digital platforms (Apple Music, Tidal, and Amazon Music), is the Dolby Atmos version of Pink Floyd’s Animals 2018 Remix. It is the first time the album will have been available in Dolby Atmos. The Blu-ray includes High Resolution Stereo and 5.1 mixes alongside the 1977 Original Stereo Mix. For those who have compatible equipment to hear it in its full glory, the Dolby Atmos mix goes beyond ordinary listening by immersing the listener in the music, revealing details with unparalleled clarity and depth. Listeners will feel like they are inside the song as music moves around and above them. The album artwork has been reimagined especially for this release and presented in a digipak with a 16-page booklet, a sticker and a postcard. The front cover image still includes the iconic pig floating between two chimneys of the Battersea Power Station, conceived by Roger Waters. However, for this new release, the artwork has been re-created for the modern era by Storm Thorgerson’s Hipgnosis partner Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell and Peter Curzon from StormStudios, and shows the historic building as it looks now, complete with light projections, variations of which feature in the accompanying booklet. The projections and graphics were mapped and designed by Peter Curzon for the launch of the 2018 Remix and the photography is by Rupert Truman and Benny Trickett with Aubrey Powell. The Animals 2018 Remix is also available on CD, LP (with gatefold artwork), SACD and Deluxe Gatefold formats. The Deluxe Gatefold version includes LP, CD, audio Blu-ray, audio DVD and a 32-page book. Richard Wright’s 80th birthday marked by superb Wet Dream remix

Today would have been the much-missed, and much-loved, Richard Wright’s 80th birthday. Today sees new mixes by Steven Wilson of Richard’s debut solo album, Wet Dream, available on CD and all streaming platforms, with a deep blue transparent marbled vinyl and blu-ray edition of the album being released on September 29th. The vinyl reissue sees it on the format for the first time since its original release in 1978. It is on streaming platforms for the first time ever including a new Dolby Atmos mix, and the Blu-ray edition of Wet Dream includes the Dolby Atmos mIx, a 5.1 surround mix (DTS-HD Master Audio 96/24), the new stereo mix in Hi-Res Audio (96/24), and exclusive personal images and videos from around this period of his life. It’s housed in a book format with four collectable postcards and an 8-page booklet. Since the initial announcement, the Blu-ray has been expanded to also include a flat transfer of the original pre-master of the 1978 stereo mix, taken from the analogue reels, as well as Steven Wilson’s 2023 instrumental stereo mixes of the four vocal tracks on the album being added. This reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard’s children and managers of his estate. As per the original release, the bi-fold sleeve folds out to extend the image and features the same vibrant colour palette. This time, the unidentified person in bright red shorts is swimming within deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool and the image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, referencing the nautical theme of the record. The image was taken by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, which is where the album was written and the graphic design is by Carl Glover. The original artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson and photographed by Audrey Powell for Hipgnosis and features in the vinyl booklet. Upon rediscovering this record (broadly speaking, quite overlooked or unknown by some Pink Floyd fans), it becomes hugely apparent how much of Richard’s DNA runs through Floyd. His distinct rhythm patterns, song structure and style of play exudes throughout, shining a light on his unique talent and influence on modern music. Yesterday evening, at the Dolby Listening Room in Soho, London, family (most of Richard’s were there), friends, and selected media were treated to a pair of playback sessions – in the pitch black – which straddled a Q&A session with Steven Wilson, hosted by Guy Pratt. First, the playback: this was the Atmos mix which is coming in September on the Blu-ray of the album, and simply put, it sounded absolutely superb. The clarity, power, and sheer musical and emotional impact made for a truly memorable night. The Q&A with Steven led to some fascinating insights into the process of finding the original master tapes (which were held at Universal in London), then getting them “baked” by Damon Iddins at Astoria (David Gilmour’s houseboat studio), before Steven could take the separate 24-track recordings and create the remix, which gives us an album which has never sounded as good as this! Here’s a glimpse at the Q&A, and the message to the attendees on a screen in the Ray Dolby Lounge (a separate screen was showing home video footage of Richard, which should be on the Blu-ray when that is released). Finally, if you’ve yet to hear it, here’s a taster of the album: ORDERING INFORMATION:
