Back in December, we told you about a new, streaming-only release from Roger Waters – The Lockdown Sessions. The album consists of six songs, and runs for 39 and a half minutes. At that time, there were no publicised plans for a physical release of this, but the good news for those of you interested in this, is that this afternoon a CD and vinyl LP has been announced, for release on June 2nd, 2023. Housed in a gatefold cover, the tracks on the album are Mother, Two Suns In The Sunset, Vera, The Gunner’s Dream, The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range, and Comfortably Numb 2022. Roger explained that he was going to do an album of unusual encores, but then lockdown struck. “Our Us and Them Tour lasted three years… At every gig we did an encore after the main show closed with Comfortably Numb⦠the encore was always Mother… I can’t remember why I decided to start doing other songs?… Anyway, at some point after the end of the tour⦠I started thinking, “It could make an interesting album, all those encores”⦠“The Encores”. “Yeah, has a nice ring to it!” Thenâ¦I’m in England doing the Ginger Baker tribute gig one Tuesday night at the Hammersmith Odeon with Eric Clapton and⦠the following Saturday marching from The Australian Embassy to Parliament Square to make a speech in support of Julian Assange, when bugger me, Covidâ¦Schlummmm! “For me it was Friday March 13th 2020. Lockdown! So much for the “Encores” project. Unless⦠We’ve tacked C. Numb on the end of the collection, as an appropriate exclamation point in closing this circle of love.” The Lockdown Sessions were recorded at home during the Covid lockdown between 2020 and 2021. Pink Floyd live in Canada, 1975 – footage revealed
Every so often, some vintage Pink Floyd surfaces when you least expect it. In the last day or so, some incredible footage of the band playing live in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, on June 28th, 1975, has surfaced. This gig was the final show on the 1975 North American tour, showcasing The Dark Side Of The Moon and selections from Wish You Were Here, along with Raving And Drooling and Gotta Be Crazy (both to appear later on Animals), with an encore of Echoes. The footage which has just appeared was shot on Super 8, which allows for around 3 minutes on each cartridge of film. Thus, during the 70s if people were using Super 8 cameras to record shows, they’d grab snippets and highlights, rather than have the camera rolling for entire sequences. The footage, which you’ll see below, features highlights of the band’s performance throughout the evening, showing some of the stage effects well. The footage has also been restored and tidied up, and syncronised with an audio recording of this show (Super 8 film at that time was normally just picture, no sound, although larger cartridges had recently been developed allowing a magnetic sound recording). Enjoy!

Us and Them: The Authorised Story of Hipgnosis – new book coming
Us and Them: The Authorised Story of Hipgnosis (https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/178870567X/braindamage-21) takes a close look at arguably the principal music industry designers Hipgnosis. Between the late ’60s and early ’80s, design house Hipgnosis created some of the most iconic and ubiquitous album artwork of all time. Their original lifespan coincided with the golden age of the 12-inch LP, beginning just as the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper made the record sleeve the ultimate blank canvas and ending just as new technology looked set to usurp vinyl. Having originally been approached to design an album cover for their friends Pink Floyd, students Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell and Storm Thorgerson would go on to define the visual identity of rock and roll for the next fifteen years, swiftly gaining international prominence for their famed The Dark Side of the Moon artwork. This paved the way for other major musicians to set foot in the surreal photo-design world of Storm and Po, resulting in seminal Hipgnosis creations for the likes of Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Genesis, Black Sabbath, ELO and Yes. In this authorised account, with access to previously unpublished material and exclusive contributions from David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Peter Gabriel, Roger Waters, Robert Plant and even Aubrey Powell himself, Blake goes behind the scenes of the Hipgnosis partnership to reveal the pioneering ambition and grand vision that led to their success, as well as the clashing egos and artistic differences that undermined it. The Hipgnosis story also offers hitherto-untold insight into some of music’s most legendary bands, as viewed through the prism of the people who shaped their imagery and cultural legacy. With the work of Hipgnosis continuing to be referenced, reproduced and revered worldwide, Us and Them serves as a celebration, a cautionary tale and a compelling human drama, exploring the vital intersection between art and music. Blake is best known in the Floyd community for his excellent book, Pigs Might Fly: The Inside Story Of Pink Floyd (known as Comfortably Numb in the US) which originally came out in 2007, and subsequently updated. Other books worth searching out by Blake include titles covering Queen and Freddie Mercury, Peter Grant (Led Zeppelin’s manager) and The Who. ORDERING INFO:If Blake’s previous books are any guide, it really sounds like another essential book – and orders are now possible through a number of retailers. Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon – official book for 50th anniversary
Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon cover March 2023 sees the 50th anniversary of the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd, and as part of the anniversary celebrations, an official 216 page hardback book is being published on 1st March to commemorate the band and the album. The album-sized (12″ x 12″) package features rare and unseen backstage and onstage photography of the band during the album tours of 1972 to 1975. 129 candid black-and-white photographs by Storm Thorgerson, Jill Furmanovsky, Aubrey Powell, Storm Thorgerson and Peter Christopherson document the soundchecks, the shows and the after shows. A review of the October 1972 Wembley gig, originally published in Melody Maker, provides insight into one of the Floydâs most celebrated performances, and there is a complete listing of the tour dates. The second part explores in 65 colour images how the original prism motif by Hipgnosis and StormStudios evolved into an array of graphics and homages to the world’s great artists, some of which went on to grace further projects of the band. Co-founder of StormStudios, Peter Curzon, recalls the details of each brief and the development of the graphics over a 50-year period. At this stage, there is no indication of what the cover looks like, and as we get more information, including the cover, we will update this page.
