All of us here at Brain Damage offer our very best wishes to Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who celebrates the very special occasion of his 80th birthday today (January 27th). We all hope you are going to have a fantastic day, Nick! The cornerstone of the band, he had his first drum kit at the tender age of 13. A member of Pink Floyd since the earliest iterations, he is the only one to have appeared on every one of their albums. Thanks to his late father Bill, he has been a petrol head from a young boy, and cars have been – and remain – one of his major passions in life. Of course, for those who haven’t read it, Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/inside-out-2011-edition-updated-paperback-nick-mason-2.html) is an absolutely essential read, and available in a variety of editions: hardback, paperback and an audiobook, which is read by Nick himself… Nick has contributed to a number of magazines on motoring issues over the years (including a fascinating monthly column in Octane Magazine), and also became president of the Guild of Motoring Writers. He is a trustee of the Beaulieu National Motor Museum, and a life member and Guardian of the BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club). He has been involved in motor racing since the early 1970s and has entered Le Mans five times. Musically, of course, the big news over the last few years was the launch of his new band, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets. The four initial, small gigs in May 2018 held in London lead to a very successful and critically acclaimed European tour in September. This was followed, of course, in 2019 with dates in the US, Canada, and more dates in the UK and Europe. 2020 saw the release of the superb London Roundhouse concert film on audio and video formats, and was due to see the band play more shows. Sadly, the pandemic put the halt on any such plans for 2020 and 2021, but the band were back with a bang in 2022 and 2023! The incredible musician, songwriter and record producer Phil Manzanera has now announced his memoir, Revolucion to Roxy. The book features over 100 black white, and colour, photographs looking at his times and adventures with not only Roxy Music but Pink Floyd and David Gilmour, Heroes del Silencio, and much more. There’s apparently a lot to interest Floyd fans in the book, with a chapter devoted to ‘The Gilmour Years’. Manzanera met Gilmour when Phil was still at Dulwich College. Phil’s brother Eugen was at Cambridge University and met David at gigs. Much later, Manzanera co-produced Gilmour’s 2006 album On an Island, and played in Gilmour’s band for tours in Europe and North America. Manzanera also co-wrote One Slip from 1987’s A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, played on the Rattle That Lock album, and helped bring together the pieces of music which eventually became Pink Floyd’s final album, The Endless River, which he was also co-producer for. Phil: “I’ve written this memoir for my English and Colombian family, dear friends and music fans, who have followed my musical twists and turns for over half a century. We all have different memories of the same events, and these stories are my stories. It’s a memoir that spans my 50’s childhood in Cuba, Hawaii and Venezuela, when everything seemed in the brightest technicolor, to grey but very cool ’60’s London and the start of a music career that continues to enrich my life, some 50 years later. Just announced is the worldwide release – housed in a 7″ gatefold sleeve – of a special edition of Atom Heart Mother, originally sold only in Japan in August 2021. This is a very interesting package celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s pair of concerts at Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Hakone, Japan – the band’s first in that country. This special edition will be available from December 8th, 2023. The background to the release is this: an original 16mm film of Atom Heart Mother from the 1971 Hakone Aphrodite shows was recently discovered in a fan’s garage. A long time was spent digitizing, restoring and remastering, and to mark the 50th anniversary of the ’71 Hakone Aphrodite event, a special edition (a two disc set of a CD and Blu-ray) of the Atom Heart Mother album was released in Japan. Now, finally, this enhanced video will be released outside of Japan. The Blu-ray disc contains the restored footage of Atom Heart Mother, showing the band on stage performing the song, and travelling around Japan, together with some additional bonus footage of Pink Floyd’s crew, setting up the show, dealing with issues, etc., which hasn’t been seen before. The pack comes with a 60-page photo book with never-seen-before photos, a reproduction programme, venue map flyer, Osaka show poster and Hakone Aphrodite ticket reprint which all looks great! Just announced is the release – on October 13th – of breakout sets from Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon (TDSOTM) 50th Anniversary box set. Coming on that date, from Warner Music (Sony Music outside Europe) are the hoped for stand-alone releases of the newly remastered TDSOTM on CD, LP and Blu-ray. First released as part of the box set which appeared in March, this will be the first time that the new remaster of the classic album will be available on its own. The Blu-ray contains the Dolby Atmos and a 5.1 Surround mix as well as the remastered Stereo version. The package comes with commemorative postcards, stickers and a 24-page booklet. The 50th Anniversary continues to be celebrated as Pink Floyd invited a new generation of animators to enter a competition to create animated music videos for any of the 10 songs on the album, and a number of entries have been lodged already. Pink Floyd has a rich history of collaborating with animators (Ian Emes, Gerald Scarfe, etc.), and in some cases the visuals that accompany the songs have become synonymous with the music itself. Animators can enter up to 10 videos, one per song on the album. A winner will be selected from a panel of experts which will include Nick Mason and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell (Pink Floyd’s creative consultant). The deadline for submissions is November 30th 2023. The second track from the upcoming Redux version of The Dark Side Of The Moon, that Roger Waters is releasing on October 6th (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/roger-waters-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-redux-album-annou.html), has been released today to streaming services. Time has now been added to Money as the second full publicly available track from this new version of the Pink Floyd classic. Together they give a decent clue as to how the album should sound – a fairly stripped back, almost introspective and certainly atmospheric take, which is quite different from the original. Today would have been the much-missed, and much-loved, Richard Wright’s 80th birthday. Today sees new mixes by Steven Wilson of Richard’s debut solo album, Wet Dream, available on CD and all streaming platforms, with a deep blue transparent marbled vinyl and blu-ray edition of the album being released on September 29th. The vinyl reissue sees it on the format for the first time since its original release in 1978. It is on streaming platforms for the first time ever including a new Dolby Atmos mix, and the Blu-ray edition of Wet Dream includes the Dolby Atmos mIx, a 5.1 surround mix (DTS-HD Master Audio 96/24), the new stereo mix in Hi-Res Audio (96/24), and exclusive personal images and videos from around this period of his life. It’s housed in a book format with four collectable postcards and an 8-page booklet. Since the initial announcement, the Blu-ray has been expanded to also include a flat transfer of the original pre-master of the 1978 stereo mix, taken from the analogue reels, as well as Steven Wilson’s 2023 instrumental stereo mixes of the four vocal tracks on the album being added. This reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard’s children and managers of his estate. As per the original release, the bi-fold sleeve folds out to extend the image and features the same vibrant colour palette. This time, the unidentified person in bright red shorts is swimming within deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool and the image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, referencing the nautical theme of the record. The image was taken by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, which is where the album was written and the graphic design is by Carl Glover. The original artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson and photographed by Audrey Powell for Hipgnosis and features in the vinyl booklet. Upon rediscovering this record (broadly speaking, quite overlooked or unknown by some Pink Floyd fans), it becomes hugely apparent how much of Richard’s DNA runs through Floyd. His distinct rhythm patterns, song structure and style of play exudes throughout, shining a light on his unique talent and influence on modern music. Yesterday evening, at the Dolby Listening Room in Soho, London, family (most of Richard’s were there), friends, and selected media were treated to a pair of playback sessions – in the pitch black – which straddled a Q&A session with Steven Wilson, hosted by Guy Pratt. First, the playback: this was the Atmos mix which is coming in September on the Blu-ray of the album, and simply put, it sounded absolutely superb. The clarity, power, and sheer musical and emotional impact made for a truly memorable night. The Q&A with Steven led to some fascinating insights into the process of finding the original master tapes (which were held at Universal in London), then getting them “baked” by Damon Iddins at Astoria (David Gilmour’s houseboat studio), before Steven could take the separate 24-track recordings and create the remix, which gives us an album which has never sounded as good as this! Here’s a glimpse at the Q&A, and the message to the attendees on a screen in the Ray Dolby Lounge (a separate screen was showing home video footage of Richard, which should be on the Blu-ray when that is released). Roger Waters – The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux, his reimagining of the iconic 1973 Pink Floyd album, has now been announced. Coming on October 6th, it will be available in a variety of different editions, including digital, CD, cassette, and a range of double vinyl LPs in almost ‘any colour you like’! Roger: “When we recorded the stripped down songs for the Lockdown Sessions, the 50th anniversary of the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon was looming on the horizon. It occurred to me that The Dark Side Of The Moon could well be a suitable candidate for a similar re-working, partly as a tribute to the original work, but also to re-address the political and emotional message of the whole album. I discussed it with Gus and Sean, and when we’d stopped giggling and shouting ‘You must be ****ing mad’ at one another we decided to take it on. It’s turned out really great and I’m excited for everyone to hear it. It’s not a replacement for the original which, obviously, is irreplaceable. But it is a way for the seventy nine year old man to look back across the intervening fifty years into the eyes of the twenty nine year old and say, to quote a poem of mine about my Father, ‘We did our best, we kept his trust, our Dad would have been proud of us’. And also it is a way for me to honour a recording that Nick and Rick and Dave & I have every right to be very proud of.” You can get your first proper experience of Roger’s new take on this album, with the official lyric video for Money, below. The album will be available on digital platforms, as well as CD, and as mentioned above, the range of double vinyl editions, which includes standard black, a selected-store-only blue vinyl (please check with your local record store for this, or order below through HMV), an Amazon exclusive violet vinyl, a white vinyl which is a German exclusive through jpc, and Roger’s official store (https://rogerwaters.tmstor.es) has an exclusive transparent orange vinyl edition, bundles with exclusive numbered prints and standard CD and vinyl editions, and even a gold cassette! Interestingly, the fourth side of the vinyl includes “an original composition”, which isn’t on the CD or cassette editions (we don’t yet know about the digital offerings). The Times newspaper today notes that “a new 13-minute original ambient bonus track inspired by the re-recording will feature on the ten-track album, which will be released on the record label Cooking Vinyl on October 6 and supported by a series of live shows.” ORDERING INFORMATION:

Well, the day is now here! Tonight, in Loreley, Germany, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets start their 2023 Echoes Tour. They will be taking in a number of European countries this month (July) – Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and no less than six shows in Italy, including a return for Nick to the ancient ruins of Pompeii for a concert to be held in the Teatro Grande (after he receives an honorary citizenship from the mayor of Pompei on the day of the concert – the same honour that David Gilmour received back in July 2016 when he played in the ruins located in the city). Then, in September, they will be playing six shows in Australia. As those of you who were fortunate enough to have seen the band on their quite extensive 2022 Echoes Tour, which took in shows in the UK, Europe, the US and Canada, presenting another incredible set list and upgraded staging to thrilled audiences across the board. One of many highlights of the set was of course the piece that the tour is named after – Echoes – each night a tour de force which is sure to be replicated again this year.
