David Gilmour – Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, Irvine, CA, USA – June 24th 1984

Our thanks to Theatrice Westbrook for very kindly sharing recollections of an evening in Irvine, California, in June 1984, when David Gilmour played at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre as part of his About Face tour that year: Chef André Wiederkehr, a friend of my co-worker and friend Karen, got tickets and they had a couple extra. They invited me and other coworker/friend Brian and gave us a ride. Pink Floyd wasn’t really Brian’s cup of tea. He was more New Wave, outrageous… he turned me on to John Waters and “Pink Flamingos”! But ironically after a group of us saw Berlin in concert in Hollywood earlier, he told me LA was too much, he couldn’t wait to get back behind that Orange Curtain (the more conservative Orange County, California)! Go figure. Brian had his leg in a cast, but refused a wheelchair and walked from the parking lot to our seat on crutches. (He took up the wheelchair offer after the concert.) We had great seats in the lower section, closest to the stage. David Gilmour’s first solo tour. Roger Waters had also begun his first solo tour during the middle of this tour (and more Floyd acrimony would lay ahead). Before the show, André and I went to the restroom; I came out first. Through the fence I saw a guy in jeans and a red Pendleton talking with crew or someone. He looked like a trucker. I looked at his face from profile, it was David Gilmour, 20-25 feet away, with very short hair. I about shit myself. André came out of the bathroom, talking. André was a super hardcore European Floyd fan from Austria. (Translation: Hardcore fan.) When I pointed out David Gilmour, he stopped in his tracks, staring, speechless. We both stared for a couple minutes before returning to our seats. No opening act. A beautiful Summer eve, a little warm. I had both solo albums and hoped he would play my favourite track “There’s No Way Out of Here” (he didn’t). But I was not disappointed. The new album, “About Face”, was more “radio friendly”, with more guest players (Jeff Porcaro was the drummer). The stage was much more scaled down than on Floyd tours. (Part of the show is visible in the US-only 1984 home video release “David Gilmour Live.”) The band played cuts from Gilmour’s two solo albums along with a couple of Floyd tracks. The stage darkened and a deep synth pulsated in syncopation with lighting on the lip of the stage and around the edge of the stage risers. This signalled the opening song “Until We Sleep”, the first of 5 new album cuts. The band was on it. Loud and clear. I thought I recognized the second guitarist who looked like Mick Ralphs, noted this imposing bald drummer, and a lady on percussion who looked like she was pregnant. The next song was the Pete Townshend/David Gilmour song “All Lovers Are Deranged”, which slammed in the same fashion as the first, and with an ending that presaged the intro/outro of Pink Floyd song “Sorrow” (from the 1987 album “A Momentary Lapse of Reason”), as it shook the whole amphitheater.

For the 2024 dates, these will be the ONLY North American cities, and join the dates in London, England, and Rome, Italy on the schedule. Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets – US/Canada tour 2022 rescheduled dates

With uncertainty over surges of Coronavirus cases, the January/February 2022 tour dates for Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets in the US and Canada were postponed. Rearranging existing tour dates (particularly at the moment with the heavily increased demand from all artists affected) must be incredibly difficult, as the available venues must be the right size for the act, and in a vaguely logical geographical location so bands and crews aren’t zig-zagging their way across a country in an unsustainable way. However, after what we suspect has been a huge amount of work behind the scenes, the revised US and Canadian tour has now been announced. The difficulties in sorting a revised schedule are evident in that, sadly, six gigs have had to be cancelled. These are: Cincinnati which was originally on February 1st, St Louis on February 8th, Memphis on February 9th, Kansas on February 10th, Sacramento on February 23rd and Spokane on February 27th. For all of you holding tickets for these shows, the point of sale should be in touch with a refund. The better news is that these six cancelled gigs, have been replaced by eight new shows (in different locations). There are also three of the existing shows that have moved venues, within the same cities – Washington DC, Phoenix AZ, and Vancouver BC. For rescheduled shows that will be taking place at the same venue, all previously purchased tickets will be valid for the new date. For all shows being moved to new venues, customers will be automatically refunded for their purchase and offered an exclusive presale opportunity for the new venue and date. Further information will be sent directly to the original ticket holders by email shortly, and for any additional ticketing inquiries, fans should reach out to their point of purchase. Further to our recent news that Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets had revealed more dates for their 2022 Echoes Tour, taking in twenty six new dates in the US and Canada, for those who are intending to go, a reminder that ALL the shows are NOW ON SALE! Tickets for the newly announced shows, detailed below, went on sale through the links given in two waves. Broadly speaking the first half of the tour went on sale last Friday (October 29th), with the exception of the Philadelphia date, and the Cincinnati date, which have both now gone on sale today (Friday, November 5th), along with the rest of the dates. We suspect tickets will sell quickly, as they are playing a number of relatively small, and more intimate, venues than some artists would tend to go for, with some of the venues being particularly historic and beautiful! New edition of Ron Geesin’s The Flaming Cow: The Making of Pink Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother book

On November 19th, 2021, a new, paperback edition of the book we called “a fantastic read . . . witty and incredibly detailed” is published. Ron Geesin’s ‘The Flaming Cow: The Making of Pink Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother’ is an in-depth look at the creation of the title track of the album, reviewed here when published in 2013 as a hardback (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/the-flaming-cow-the-making-of-pink-floyds-atom-heart-mother-ron-g.html), that offers a rare insight into the brilliant but often fraught collaboration between Pink Floyd and composer Geesin, the resultof which became known as Atom Heart Mother – the Floyd’s first UK number one album. From the time drummer Nick Mason visited Geesin’s damp basement flat in Notting Hill, to the most recent performances of the piece in France, this book is an unflinching account about how one of Pink Floyd’s most celebrated compositions came to life. Alongside unpublished photographs from the Abbey Road recording sessions (the only ones taken) and the subsequent performances in London and Paris, Geesin goes on to describe how the title was chosen, why he was not credited on the record, how he left Hyde Park in tears, and why the group did not much like the work. The Flaming Cow also explores its recent performances, and its new-found cult status that has led to it being studied for the French Baccalaureat. The book – with a foreword by Nick Mason – really is a fantastic read, coupled with the wonderful, evocative black and white shots of the band, and hired players and choir, in the midst of work at Abbey Road. Most of these have not been seen before, and these along could be argued as worth the price of admission. Setting the tone perfectly is the foreword by Nick Mason. Typically self-effacing, it acknowledges the book for what it is: “a fascinating in-depth study of one particular work”, an epic piece which Nick states “we remain fond of, proud of, and in my case slightly bemused by”. Roger Waters announces new tour dates for 2022

This afternoon, Roger Waters has finally revealed the revised tour dates for his This Is Not A Drill production, which was due to be performed between July and October 2020 in North America, and due to the pandemic, postponed. The new dates take in the same period, albeit in 2022, and are as follows. This new video has Roger talking about the tour: Ticket holders should keep hold of their tickets, as they will be valid for the new dates, and there should be no need to contact the individual venues. At the moment, there is no indication that Roger will be performing the show elsewhere in the world, but should that change, we will of course let you know.
