Our friend Michael Nickel has been in touch with some information about a newly published issue of a German language magazine, which should be of interest to visitors to Brain Damage. The July/August 2023 issue of Drums & Percussion (What Moves Drummers) Magazine (issue 4 of 2023) (https://www.sticks.de/heftinhalt-artikeldetail?tx_news_pi1%5BactbackPid%5D=343&tx_news_pi1%5Baction%5D=detail&tx_news_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=News&tx_news_pi1%5Bnews%5D=13517&cHash=e12a9539a6bedafa8a852ee1c39116e9) has an eye catching cover featuring a very happy looking Nick Mason, in the midst of one of his Saucerful Of Secrets concerts. The cover story – “Time travel to the beginnings of Pink Floyd” – with Nick interviewed, is accompanied by a potted history of the band. On their website, they give an extract from the magazine feature: “With his new band Saucerful Of Secrets, the drummer who made music history with Pink Floyd is going way back in time. Here, Nick Mason tells us how this special time travel feels. However, the new band is not the only thing on the mind of the now 79-year-old… “This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the über-album The Dark Side of the Moon, and then there’s also a traveling exhibition about Pink Floyd called Their Mortal Remains – not to mention that Pink Floyd, by the way, has even released a new song after decades of abstinence in protest against the war in Ukraine. More than one topic for a conversation with a legend of our guild. “Nick, at the Roundhouse in London you played in 1966 and 2019 with at least partly the same songs. Where were the similarities and differences between then and now? Nick: “That was quite interesting. Of course there were similarities, but also differences: The main ones were on the technical side, because in 1966, for example, there was no stage, but an old trailer and a very small PA or very little electronics. So the whole thing was pretty quiet [laughs]. I mean, at the end of the evening the PA would have been completely destroyed. But musically it was pretty similar in parts, which I found very pleasant.” Our thanks to Michael for the information. New issue of Prog magazine features Pink Floyd’s TDSOTM
new issue (issue 142) of the UK’s Prog Magazine (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/47052423/prog-magazine-single-issue.thtml). Always a great read, this month’s issue – as made clear from the striking cover – has a major feature of particular interest to Pink Floyd fans. As you all know, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon celebrated its 50th anniversary earlier this year. Following the album’s release the band performed two shows at London’s Earls Court venue, catapulting themselves into a world of huge arena shows and conceptual albums that would become their trademark. But at the same time it would also prove to be the start of the band’s undoing. By the time they performed The Wall in 1980 at the very same venue, the writing was, well… The new issue of Prog explores how “Dark Side changed Pink Floyd forever. Ten years after its release the band were in turmoil…” Elsewhere in the magazine, John Lees talks about the making of Barclay James Harvest’s classic Once Again album while Soft Machine bring everyone up to speed with their brand new album Other Doors, as do prog Eurovision stars Voyager, while Enslaved’s Ivar Bjørnson tells the magazine about his journey from extreme metal to prog, Nordic folk and beyond. Plus Arjen Lucassen, The Fierce And The Dead, Mystery, Ring Van Möbius, Godsticks, Fate’s Warning’s Ray Alder, I Am The Manic Whale and Avenged Sevenfold bring us up to speed about their new albums and they review live gigs from Peter Gabriel, Porcupine Tree, Roger Waters, Muse and more… Prog 142 also comes with four Pink Floyd postcards and there’s a great 23-track Spirit Of Unicorn Records sampler featuring music from Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, John Wetton, DBA, Focus and loads more. If your local store doesn’t stock this magazine, you can get a copy, shipped anywhere in the world, through this direct link (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/47052423/prog-magazine-single-issue.thtml). Hipgnosis Studio: Pink Floyd And Beyond opens tonight in Italy
Opening this evening at the Palazzo Mezzacapo, in Maiori, Salerno, Italy, is a new exhibition – Hipgnosis Studio: Pink Floyd And Beyond. The exhibition runs until 27th August celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side Of The Moon. On display will be 55 large-format works, from the band’s most iconic covers to their preparatory works and out-takes, and will tell the story of the collaboration between the Hipgnosis design studio and Pink Floyd. In an interview for the opening of the exhibition, Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell said: “I met Pink Floyd at Abbey Road studios to listen to the recordings of the new album and talk about the cover. The keyboardist, Richard Wright, asked us not to do one of our usual surrealist works, but something simpler. A week later, while reading an American physics magazine, Storm noticed a prism which, when struck by a beam of light, created a rainbow. Itâs perfect, he said. We didnât have computers and software, so I took some crayons and made a drawing. When we showed it to Pink Floyd they chose it straight away”. Po, who is a designer, photographer and director, but above all co-founder with Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis, said that the exhibition in Maiori gave “an emotional contrast between the Baroque palace and my works. I would never have thought that half a century later that prism would have been an icon: on the street you see people wearing t-shirts with that logo, itâs the first thing that struck me even when I arrived in Naples. Of course the fact that Pink Floyd sold 50 million copies of that album didn’t hurt.” The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday between 6pm – 9pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 7.30pm – 11.30pm. Roger Waters – The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux album announced!
Roger Waters – The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux, his reimagining of the iconic 1973 Pink Floyd album, has now been announced. Coming on October 6th, it will be available in a variety of different editions, including digital, CD, cassette, and a range of double vinyl LPs in almost ‘any colour you like’! Roger: “When we recorded the stripped down songs for the Lockdown Sessions, the 50th anniversary of the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon was looming on the horizon. It occurred to me that The Dark Side Of The Moon could well be a suitable candidate for a similar re-working, partly as a tribute to the original work, but also to re-address the political and emotional message of the whole album. I discussed it with Gus and Sean, and when we’d stopped giggling and shouting ‘You must be ****ing mad’ at one another we decided to take it on. It’s turned out really great and I’m excited for everyone to hear it. It’s not a replacement for the original which, obviously, is irreplaceable. But it is a way for the seventy nine year old man to look back across the intervening fifty years into the eyes of the twenty nine year old and say, to quote a poem of mine about my Father, ‘We did our best, we kept his trust, our Dad would have been proud of us’. And also it is a way for me to honour a recording that Nick and Rick and Dave & I have every right to be very proud of.” You can get your first proper experience of Roger’s new take on this album, with the official lyric video for Money, below. The album will be available on digital platforms, as well as CD, and as mentioned above, the range of double vinyl editions, which includes standard black, a selected-store-only blue vinyl (please check with your local record store for this, or order below through HMV), an Amazon exclusive violet vinyl, a white vinyl which is a German exclusive through jpc, and Roger’s official store (https://rogerwaters.tmstor.es) has an exclusive transparent orange vinyl edition, bundles with exclusive numbered prints and standard CD and vinyl editions, and even a gold cassette! Interestingly, the fourth side of the vinyl includes “an original composition”, which isn’t on the CD or cassette editions (we don’t yet know about the digital offerings). The Times newspaper today notes that “a new 13-minute original ambient bonus track inspired by the re-recording will feature on the ten-track album, which will be released on the record label Cooking Vinyl on October 6 and supported by a series of live shows.” ORDERING INFORMATION:

The Dark Side Of The Moon – Official 50th Anniversary Book
Back in October, we told you about the official hardback book that was published on March 24th 2023 as part of the 50th anniversary of the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd. With the Floydian bookshelves now beginning to groan with the number of books easily into triple figures – and that’s not including lyric or musical tablature publications – a lot of familiar ground has been covered in a number of them. It therefore takes something different, something new, for books to stand out in a crowded field. So, we come to the Official 50th Anniversary Book, which is quite rightly already proving extremely popular amongst Pink Floyd fans who have been fortunate enough to already see it. The book is being sold separately as well as being included in the 50th anniversary The Dark Side Of The Moon Deluxe Box Set (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/pink-floyds-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-50th-anniversary-box-set-anno.html). There is no difference between the box set and separate edition, other than the latter includes a dust jacket which features the iconic prism as per the record cover. With the box set carefully holding the book inside, a dust cover is not needed. There is a third option if you are interested – the Brain Damage exclusive signed book and print offer through RockArchive (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/exclusive-pink-floyds-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-official-book-and-signed-print.html) which is limited to just 100 copies and selling well. The book and print are signed by photographer Jill Furmanovsky. Curated by Furmanovsky, with art direction by Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, this LP-sized, 160-page book – with 143 illustrations – showcases some incredible, rare and previously unseen photographs, and was created with the involvement of the band members. In case you need reminding, or haven’t already seen the contents, the book includes:
The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary lights up New York
Happy release day! As you are probably aware, today sees the release of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary deluxe box set, official book, and Live At Wembley 1974 standalone CD and vinyl (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/pink-floyds-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-50th-anniversary-box-set-anno.html) and there’s been plenty of coverage all over, celebrating this remarkable anniversary. Some places have done special things to mark the 50th – Milan have recreated the iconic cover in Duomo Square, using carefully arranged lights to render the colours coming out of the prism. We’ll hopefully have pictures of that shortly. Over in New York City, the Empire State Building have paid their own tribute, including the prism spectrum in their mast from sunset, which should be visible across Manhattan, and further afield, via their webcam. Here’s a drone’s eye look at it: We hope those of you who have already bought items from the 50th Anniversary range – the box set, book, standalone items or even merchandise – are pleased with what you have, and we’d love to hear your thoughts on what has arrived today!
