As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations for Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon, there was a competition running for any interested animators to come up with new videos for each of the tracks on the album. With judges including Nick Mason and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam, Anton Corbijn, and Gerald Scarfe, the winning videos can be seen below. A recently opened exhibition of Hipgnosis pictures and artwork in Germany has been attracting a lot of interest from visitors, along with local media. Co-curator Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell was in touch with us, to provide some more detail on this for you all. Po said: “The Hipgnosis Exhibition ‘Breathe’ opened on Sunday 21st January to an enthusiastic crowd of 400 people. The exhibition runs over 3 floors of this wonderful gallery and contains 150 Hipgnosis pictures, curated by myself and John Colton of the Browse Gallery, Berlin. There has been great press and TV coverage. “The initial rooms celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon and all the artwork that has been designed by Hipgnosis or Storm Studios over the past fifty years related to that celebrated album. The Ludwig Schloss Gallery is in Oberhausen, 30 minutes by car from the centre of Dusseldorf. Just announced is the worldwide release – housed in a 7″ gatefold sleeve – of a special edition of Atom Heart Mother, originally sold only in Japan in August 2021. This is a very interesting package celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s pair of concerts at Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Hakone, Japan – the band’s first in that country. This special edition will be available from December 8th, 2023. The background to the release is this: an original 16mm film of Atom Heart Mother from the 1971 Hakone Aphrodite shows was recently discovered in a fan’s garage. A long time was spent digitizing, restoring and remastering, and to mark the 50th anniversary of the ’71 Hakone Aphrodite event, a special edition (a two disc set of a CD and Blu-ray) of the Atom Heart Mother album was released in Japan. Now, finally, this enhanced video will be released outside of Japan. The Blu-ray disc contains the restored footage of Atom Heart Mother, showing the band on stage performing the song, and travelling around Japan, together with some additional bonus footage of Pink Floyd’s crew, setting up the show, dealing with issues, etc., which hasn’t been seen before. The pack comes with a 60-page photo book with never-seen-before photos, a reproduction programme, venue map flyer, Osaka show poster and Hakone Aphrodite ticket reprint which all looks great! Just announced is the release – on October 13th – of breakout sets from Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon (TDSOTM) 50th Anniversary box set. Coming on that date, from Warner Music (Sony Music outside Europe) are the hoped for stand-alone releases of the newly remastered TDSOTM on CD, LP and Blu-ray. First released as part of the box set which appeared in March, this will be the first time that the new remaster of the classic album will be available on its own. The Blu-ray contains the Dolby Atmos and a 5.1 Surround mix as well as the remastered Stereo version. The package comes with commemorative postcards, stickers and a 24-page booklet. The 50th Anniversary continues to be celebrated as Pink Floyd invited a new generation of animators to enter a competition to create animated music videos for any of the 10 songs on the album, and a number of entries have been lodged already. Pink Floyd has a rich history of collaborating with animators (Ian Emes, Gerald Scarfe, etc.), and in some cases the visuals that accompany the songs have become synonymous with the music itself. Animators can enter up to 10 videos, one per song on the album. A winner will be selected from a panel of experts which will include Nick Mason and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell (Pink Floyd’s creative consultant). The deadline for submissions is November 30th 2023. Our friend Michael Nickel has been in touch with some information about a newly published issue of a German language magazine, which should be of interest to visitors to Brain Damage. The cover story – “Time travel to the beginnings of Pink Floyd” – with Nick interviewed, is accompanied by a potted history of the band. On their website, they give an extract from the magazine feature: “With his new band Saucerful Of Secrets, the drummer who made music history with Pink Floyd is going way back in time. Here, Nick Mason tells us how this special time travel feels. However, the new band is not the only thing on the mind of the now 79-year-old… “This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the über-album The Dark Side of the Moon, and then there’s also a traveling exhibition about Pink Floyd called Their Mortal Remains – not to mention that Pink Floyd, by the way, has even released a new song after decades of abstinence in protest against the war in Ukraine. More than one topic for a conversation with a legend of our guild. “Nick, at the Roundhouse in London you played in 1966 and 2019 with at least partly the same songs. Where were the similarities and differences between then and now? Nick: “That was quite interesting. Of course there were similarities, but also differences: The main ones were on the technical side, because in 1966, for example, there was no stage, but an old trailer and a very small PA or very little electronics. So the whole thing was pretty quiet [laughs]. I mean, at the end of the evening the PA would have been completely destroyed. Always a great read, this month’s issue – as made clear from the striking cover – has a major feature of particular interest to Pink Floyd fans. As you all know, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon celebrated its 50th anniversary earlier this year. Following the album’s release the band performed two shows at London’s Earls Court venue, catapulting themselves into a world of huge arena shows and conceptual albums that would become their trademark. But at the same time it would also prove to be the start of the band’s undoing. By the time they performed The Wall in 1980 at the very same venue, the writing was, well… The new issue of Prog explores how “Dark Side changed Pink Floyd forever. Opening this evening at the Palazzo Mezzacapo, in Maiori, Salerno, Italy, is a new exhibition – Hipgnosis Studio: Pink Floyd And Beyond. The exhibition runs until 27th August celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side Of The Moon. On display will be 55 large-format works, from the band’s most iconic covers to their preparatory works and out-takes, and will tell the story of the collaboration between the Hipgnosis design studio and Pink Floyd. In an interview for the opening of the exhibition, Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell said: “I met Pink Floyd at Abbey Road studios to listen to the recordings of the new album and talk about the cover. The keyboardist, Richard Wright, asked us not to do one of our usual surrealist works, but something simpler. A week later, while reading an American physics magazine, Storm noticed a prism which, when struck by a beam of light, created a rainbow. Itâs perfect, he said. We didnât have computers and software, so I took some crayons and made a drawing. When we showed it to Pink Floyd they chose it straight away”. Po, who is a designer, photographer and director, but above all co-founder with Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis, said that the exhibition in Maiori gave “an emotional contrast between the Baroque palace and my works. I would never have thought that half a century later that prism would have been an icon: on the street you see people wearing t-shirts with that logo, itâs the first thing that struck me even when I arrived in Naples. Of course the fact that Pink Floyd sold 50 million copies of that album didn’t hurt.” The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday between 6pm – 9pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 7.30pm – 11.30pm.
