Nick Mason collaborates on new song for The Cancer Awareness Trust

Released today (Friday, December 16th) is This Christmas Time (https://thecancerplatform.com/this-christmas-time), a beautiful new song to support a new online global project providing information to people living with cancer, led by The Cancer Awareness Trust. Nick Mason, along with Ozzy Osbourne (who narrates a moving introduction), Andy Taylor of Duran Duran (who recently revealed his own battle with cancer) and Noddy Holder, lead a group of renowned artists on the song. It’s Nick’s second collaboration with the charitable endeavour founded by Professor Sir Chris Evans – the first being 2018’s One More Yard (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/archive/one-more-yard-song-out-now-including-ronnie-wood-and-nick.html). On the new project, Nick said: “It’s an honour and a delight to be asked to play on this record…I mean, what’s not to like? My favourite recording studio, the opportunity to work with great artists on a wonderful track – and for the most worthy cause… Oh, and complimentary lunch in the Abbey Road canteen!” This Christmas Time, written by Prof. Sir Chris Evans (who also played guitar), is inspired by the heroism and letters home from World War 1 British soldiers at Christmas. It has been released on Evamore Records and is now available on streaming and download platforms. The song is available to play on The Cancer Platform website, where you’ll also find the full video for the song (the video below is purely the audio), photos of the recording sessions, quotes from the artists and information from Prof. Sir Chris on how he put the songs together and why (https://thecancerplatform.com/this-christmas-time).

An Introduction To Syd Barrett – 2LP and CD reissue coming

Originally released in 2011, and now hard to find (particularly on vinyl), the compilation An Introduction To Syd Barrett is getting a deserved reissue on 2nd December 2022 on 2LP – on heavyweight 180g vinyl – and on CD. The album is designed to provide a handy overview of this visionary talent, with an eighteen track collection taking in six early Pink Floyd songs, alongside twelve of Syd’s solo recordings. David Gilmour, who originally worked on Syd’s two solo albums, as co-producer of The Madcap Laughs and as producer of Barrett, was the executive producer for the album. Damon Iddins and Andy Jackson at Astoria Studios remixed five tracks including Octopus, She Took A Long Cool Look, Dominoes and Here I Go, with Gilmour adding bass guitar to the last track. Pink Floyd’s Matilda Mother also received a fresh 2010 mix. Both versions of the album feature the original 24-page booklet and graphics plus all lyrics, and was designed including the cover art by long time Pink Floyd associate the late Storm Thorgerson and his estimable studio. Here’s the track listing, with the side splits for the vinyl edition (the CD just has all eighteen tracks on one side):
SIDE ONE: Arnold Layne / See Emily Play / Apples And Oranges (Stereo Version) / Matilda Mother (2010 Mix)
SIDE TWO: Chapter 24 / Bike / Terrapin / Love You / Dark Globe
SIDE THREE: Here I Go (2010 Remix) / Octopus (2010 Mix) / She Took A Long Cool Look (2010 Mix) / If It’s In You / Baby Lemonade
SIDE FOUR: Dominoes (2010 Mix) / Gigolo Aunt / Effervescing Elephant / Bob Dylan Blues The album is reissued in the UK and Europe on 2nd December 2022, with North America/elsewhere following in due course. Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii – open air screening in London

One of the most iconic concert films of all time took a completely different tack to all the others at the time, and was shot without an audience in attendance. The spectacular Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii had an interesting background, with the issues of the location fairly well known. Our exclusive, lengthy interview with director Adrian Maben (with some questions set by none other than Storm Thorgerson!) (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/other-related-interviews/adrian-maben-live-at-pompeii-2003-with-brain-d-2.html) covers a lot of the issues and background to the production and is well worth a read. For those in London in August this year, there’s a special opportunity to see the film under (hopefully) a nice, starry sky. The Barbican are showing it in their Sculpture Court on Tuesday, August 23rd at 8:30pm (https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2022/event/outdoor-cinema-pink-floyd-live-at-pompeii) as part of an outdoor cinema season during the summer, and tickets are now available (https://tickets.barbican.org.uk/choose-seats/875801?_ga=2.244160645.1250942542.1652427944-1898807234.1652427944). There isn’t reserved seating – they will open the area an hour before the screening for people to choose where they want to sit. Headphones will be provided for the sound, as there won’t be any speakers outside. More details are available about the event here (https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2022/event/outdoor-cinema-pink-floyd-live-at-pompeii#event-information). Our thanks to Lee McLoughlin and Andy Finn for getting in touch with the info about the screening.
