Square one: Garry Monk is facing a tough decision over SWFC man’s future – opinion

So many things have changed at Sheffield Wednesday over the past 12 months, but one thing has somehow stayed the same.

Indeed, despite the fact that the Owls have a new manager and a new-look squad, they’re still having to ponder Kieran Lee’s future at the club.

The midfielder was offered a new one year contract at the end of last season as the Owls handed him a chance to prove himself after suffering numerous serious injuries that saw him make just 17 appearances in two seasons.

The fanbase were split this time last year over whether or not Lee should have been kept on due to his injury history, but he has proven his fitness this season, already starting 16 league games for the Yorkshire club.

Lee’s contract is once again up this summer, and while fitness is seemingly no longer an issue, his performances have left a lot to be desired.

Indeed, Lee hasn’t shown the same type of form that saw him hailed as one of Wednesday’s most important players a couple of years ago.

For a start, his pass success rate is the lowest it has ever been since he joined the Owls, and he’s also averaging below one key pass per game for the first time since joining the Yorkshire club, barring last term where he played just twice.

So, how do Wednesday approach this? They know Lee is good when he’s at his best, but it seems as though his most prolific days may be behind him at this point.

However, there is another way to look at this.

Lee isn’t the only Wednesday player to underperform this season, we’ve already looked at how Massimo Luongo’s form has fallen off under Garry Monk, and perhaps his downturn in form is more of a bi-product of the whole team’s performance rather than a sign of the 31-year-old regressing.

The Owls certainly have a decision to make on the former Oldham Athletic man this summer.

In other news, Wednesday fans have been bashing one man.
