According to Football Insider, Preston North End want to give Glasgow Rangers target Daniel Johnson a new contract amid interest from Steven Gerrard’s side.
What’s the word?
Reports in recent months suggested that the Light Blues were targeting a move for the former Jamaica international. In the end, the Ibrox outfit ended up signing Bongani Zungu from Amiens a season-long loan deal, with the option to offer him a pre-contract in January instead.
It’s claimed that Rangers refused to meet Preston’s £4m asking price for the attacking midfielder, but he could be available for a cut-price deal if he rejects a contract extension at Deepdale.
And Ross Wilson must sanction a swoop for Gerrard’s long-term target before it is too late.
Better than Bongani?
Alright, we get it. The Gers just crushed Celtic in a comfortable 2-0 win at Parkhead in the first Old Firm derby of the season on Saturday. But they shouldn’t rest on their laurels, as their arch-rivals certainly won’t be in the winter transfer window.
Last term the Jamaican, who is valued at £3.6m via Transfermarkt, scored twelve goals and supplied eight assists in all competitions, whilst he averaged 1.3 shots and 1.4 key passes per game in the Championship, via WhoScored.
In contrast, Zungu failed to muster a single goal or assist for the Unicorns in Ligue 1 last season, as he registered fewer than one shot and one key pass per game, as per WhoScored.
Now, that’s not to say that we think that the 29-cap South Africa international is necessarily a bad signing. As we previously discussed, we believe he could turn out to be a real bargain, but only time will tell.
In any case, competition for places is important, especially when you consider the fact that Gerrard has to juggle domestic and European games this season.
Johnson, who has previously played for Aston Villa, could take his game to a whole other level if he gets the chance to play in the Europa League. He was described by his former teammate Chris Humphrey as “one of the best” in the number ten role, claiming “his all-round game is phenomenal.”
If Rangers are to regain their title, and the versatile player does indeed arrive in January, we suspect that he may have a part to play. It’s now up to Wilson to get a deal done.
