This evening, from 6:30pm BST (UK time), a Stand Up For Palestine concert takes place, with Yusuf (Cat Stevens) Islam, rapper Lowkey, and Roger Waters, amongst those taking part. It is being webcast from a secret location, which is a small church in London. There is no indication of when during the show that Roger will be appearing, if he will have any other musicians with him, or what he will be performing. You can watch the show via the following:
An update for those of you who have been wondering about some of the dates on the upcoming UK and Ireland Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets 2020 tour. Whilst most of the shows had been rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic, there were still three shows where revised dates hadn't been declared. One of those three – the May 7th show at London's Royal Albert Hall – has been moved to October 20th. Tickets remain valid for the revised date, and ticket holders are (as ever) advised to keep hold of their tickets and confirmations for this show. There are two other postponed shows from this leg of the tour which are yet to be announced – Dublin on April 29th, and Southampton on May 4th. Hopefully work is ongoing on getting new dates for these events and once we have the information, we will let you all know. It must be a difficult logistical exercise to come up with revised touring schedules which work with spare dates at the venues (some will have bookings, even if not yet announced, for next year already) whilst not turning the tour into a completely illogical journey! We're also expecting the European tour, due to start in Brussels on May 18th, to be postponed as well with the current global situation, and again, once we have the relevant information, we'll let you know.
The Cambridge based Cheffins auction house (https://www.cheffins.co.uk/fine-art/lot-view,-roger-syd-barrett-british-19462006_71901.htm), who sold the contents of Syd Barrett’s home in St Margaret’s Square, Cambridge, where he had lived since 1981, after his death in 2006, is auctioning a very rare artwork by him at the end of this month. The painting, titled Orange Dahlias In A Vase, 1961 and signed R.Barrett, is currently in the possession of childhood friend Phil Harden, and will be sold off on May 27th. The artwork was created by Barrett when he was just 15 years of age, and was a mix of watercolours and pastels. There were nine later artworks sold in the previous Cheffins auction, raising £121,000 to fund local art training. The estimated selling price for this newly revealed artwork is between £3,000 – £5,000 plus buyer’s fees. We suspect though that this is a VERY conservative figure and expect the final hammer price to be a lot higher. The auction house explains the provenance: “In 1957, Barrett began his secondary education at Cambridgeshire High School for Boys, which aimed to emulate the public-school model. As a student, Barrett was emphatically average and, to most of his teachers, remarkable only in his inability to follow the rules. To Gerald Arthur Clement Harden, the schoolâs art teacher between 1938 and 1971, however, Barrett was a conspicuous and prodigious talent and one of the very few pupils permitted to use Harden’s oil paints. “Painted when Barrett was just 15 years old, the present lot was gifted to Harden by the artist shortly before he left the school and began studying art at Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology. Although generally perceived as an unmotivated student by most of his tutors, Hardenâs support encouraged Barrett to pursue further study in painting and ignited in him a passion for art that would continue to burn until his death in 2006.” To see the painting in more detail, and for more details of the auction, including how to bid, visit Cheffins.co.uk (https://www.cheffins.co.uk/fine-art/lot-view,-roger-syd-barrett-british-19462006_71901.htm).
