Remembering Rugby Player Selorm Kuadey 10 Years After His Death

It’s now been 10 years since the death of former Sale Sharks winger Selorm Kuadey shocked the world.

On the 3rd January 2012, the Sharks revealed in a statement that the 24-year-old has passed away as a result of an apparent suicide.

Kuadey, who would have been 34 today (3rd January), spent five years with Sale before retiring due to injury in 2010.

Although he played for England Under-19s and England Under-20s, Ukraine-born Kuadey was never a first-team regular for Sale and injuries ended his chances of making progress in a rugby career. H

He was forced to retire after two very long term injuries in 2010, aged just 22, and had started a career outside rugby.

Kuadey went on to achieve a first-class honours degree in human biology and infectious diseases, and had started a career outside rugby.

Sale have since introduced an annual award in his memory, The Selorm Kuadey Memorial Award for work in the Community.

Leicester boss and former Sale teammate Richard Wigglesworth wrote at the time: “So gutted to hear about selorm kuadey you couldn’t meet a nicer guy.Good man hope he is remembered well.Thoughts with his family.”

Danny Care added: “Still can’t believe the news about Selorm Kuadey…One of the nicest and brightest lads you would ever meet. Will be missed. RIP mate.”

James Haskell wrote: “RIP Selorm Kuadey age 24, ex sale who sadly lost his life yday. Great sportsman gone to soon. I was lucky enough to play 7’s with him.”
