David Moyes will not take up the offer to manage Scottish giants Celtic next season and should remain at West Ham for the long term.
That is the view of former Aston Villa and England striker Gabby Agbonlahor. Moyes, 57, is now enjoying a second spell at the London Stadium but is out of contract in the summer.
While his first stint was not too successful, he has guided the Hammers to fifth in the Premier League table. They have a real shot at qualifying for the Champions League having finished 16th last term.
Moyes was disappointed not to get an extended run at the job first time around. He was in charge between November 2017 and May 2018.
The Scot oversaw just nine wins and was not offered new terms when his deal expired. But, having bided his time, he was back in the East End in December 2019.
It has been a very different story this time, with 24 wins from 56 games in charge. They are just two points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea and are above the likes of Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal.
Things could have been even better but for the Gunners’ comeback from 3-0 down to snatch a point on Sunday.
The former Everton boss’s standing has improved after what he has achieved in 2020-2021. And he has been linked with taking over at Celtic, after Neil Lennon vacated the position in February.
Moyes played for the Bhoys in the early 1980s. But Agbonlahor feels there is no chance he will leave what he has to move back north of the border.
“No,” he replied to Football Insider when asked if Moyes would move to Celtic Park. “He’s too settled at West Ham.
“They’ll reward him with a new contract at the end of the season, a long-term one, I’m sure. He won’t fancy that, no way.”
Moyes on shortlist of four
Managing Celtic is a massive job as it comes with the pressures of placating a vociferous and demanding fanbase. They have had to watch – albeit from afar – fierce Glasgow rivals Rangers waltz to the Scottish Premiership title.
Therefore the pressure on Lennon’s permanent successor will be even greater than usual. Other names in the frame include former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, Scotland manager Steve Clarke and ex-Hoops player Roy Keane.
Moyes might be a popular choice given his affiliation to the club and success in England. But he has got plenty to think about in London, with European football on the horizon next season.
