Official: Mikel Arteta joining Arsenal as head coach on Sunday

Arsenal appoint Arteta

Three weeks after Arsenal sacked Unai Emery, the Gunners have finally appointed a new boss.

The North London outfit announced on Friday the 20th of December that Mikel Arteta is joining the club as head coach on Sunday.

Arteta has no previous managerial experience so he may be viewed as somewhat of a risk by certain sections of the Arsenal faithful.

However, the Spaniard has spent the past three and a half years plying his trade as one of Pep Guardiola’s assistants at Manchester City.

So, while Arteta has never managed a club before, he has certainly been learning from one of the best in the business.

Arteta has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with his former club and had this to say after being named Arsenal boss:

“This is a huge honour. Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world. We need to be competing for the top trophies in the game and that’s been made very clear to me in my discussions with Stan and Josh Kroenke, and the senior people from the club.

“We all know there is a lot of work to be done to achieve that but I am confident we’ll do it. I’m realistic enough to know it won’t happen overnight but the current squad has plenty of talent and there is a great pipeline of young players coming through from the academy.” As quoted by Arsenal’s official website.

Everton vs Arsenal

But with Arsenal stating Arteta will join the club as head coach on Sunday, it seems Freddie Ljungberg will be the man in the dugout for Arsenal’s upcoming tie.

The Gunners will travel to Everton in Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off.

Arsenal are currently 10th in the Premier League and seven points off 4th place.

They have won just one of their four previous league outings under Ljungberg.

Everton will also head into the tie without a permanent boss with the Toffees confirming Duncan Ferguson will be in charge vs Arsenal.
