Another day, another Newcastle transfer link. The man being touted with a move to Tyneside on this occasion is Jesse Lingard.
Lingard out in the cold
The midfielder is currently still on the books of Manchester United, but is struggling for any sort of regular game time.
Lingard had made eight Premier League appearances this term, but not one of those outings lasted longer than 24 minutes, with the remaining seven all under the 20-minute mark.
Despite his struggle for game time of late, Jesse Lingard has proven fairly recently that he is still a top Premier League asset.
Lingard enjoyed something of a career revival in the second half of 2020/21 when he was loaned to West Ham.
In 16 league outings for David Moyes’ outfit, Lingard notched nine goals and five assists, playing a key role in the Hammers securing a Europa League berth for the 2021/22 season.
Lingard to Newcastle?
Now, as the winter window draws to a close, Jesse Lingard is once again being tipped to leave Manchester United on loan.
The Manchester Evening News report that Newcastle are working on a deal to sign Lingard on loan from Manchester United for the rest of the season.
Newcastle would also cover the entirety of Lingard’s £100,000-a-week wages for the rest of his United contract, as per the MEN.
Given Lingard is out of contract in June, having someone pay his salary for the rest of his deal and potentially getting some form of loan fee is still probably better than leaving him to sit on the bench most games before then departing for nothing.
The deal itself could also be a very good one for Lingard. If he helps keep Newcastle up, they would no doubt offer him a nice new contract. And, if they go down, Lingard can simply leave when his loan is finished and sign a contract with someone else. A win-win situation?
