NEW MUSIC: Murad – Laser Love

The debut release from Armenian-American singer-songwriter Murad, ‘Laser Love’ is a visceral, entrancing indie-pop/hip-hop/soul fusion.

Having graduated with a degree in Audio Engineering Design and Production, Murad already has years of know-how under her belt – she’s taken the time in contemplation of her sound, and such preparedness is exhibited on this first release ‘Laser Love’. The track is mature, rightly self-assured, and expertly crafted. Working with producer King Luck, Murad’s confidently cool vocals ride over seamless production, the result being a track which wouldn’t feel out of place in a movie (likely given that King Luck is also a film composer). The image of a far-out camera pan over car with a trunk full of cash driving off into the sunset particularly comes to mind. That’s the level of self-assuredness that ‘Laser Love’ oozes.

Beyond its production and composition, Murad’s lyrics present an intriguing contrast – where sonically the track is confident, the subject matter is more vulnerable, and likely familiar for other new artists and bands in Murad’s position. It is an anecdote for fighting to find the balance between working life, and the commitment to becoming a recording artist. A “cry for escapism,” and evermore relevant in the modern climate in many Western countries where the arts are increasingly underfunded and sidelined – even to the point where artists are being told to ‘retrain’ – Murad articulates this struggle well (‘if you need me somewhere / I don’t even know where I’m going’).

Nevertheless, Murad still exudes confidence in her trajectory in ‘Laser Love’ – with its driving trap beat, her cool delivery, and its cavernous, seamless, near-psychedelic production, this track isn’t afraid to show off Murad’s potential.

Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon SACD finally reissued

Back in January 2020, we advised that later that month the long-awaited reissue of the hybrid multichannel SACD (Super Audio CD) of Pink Floyd’s iconic 1973 album, The Dark Side Of The Moon, was due. Unfortunately, due to unspecified reasons (which were possibly related to the first appearance and spread
of Covid-19) the reissue was delayed. Great news for all of you who have been patiently waiting on confirmed information of when you could get your hands on this – it is now seemingly starting to ship out to those who have ordered it! Originally released in the SACD format (having a separate stereo layer playable on all normal CD players) in 2003 as part of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the album, the SACD proved very popular. However, it has been out of print for some years, so the reissue will be welcomed by many. The release comes on the Pink Floyd Records label (catalogue number PFR24) via Analogue Productions, and they are selling it fairly much exclusively through their US-based AcousticSounds.com store (https://store.acousticsounds.com/d/133317/Pink_Floyd-The_Dark_Side_Of_The_Moon-Hybrid_Multichannel_SACD), although for those in the UK and other places might prefer to use the UK’s Rough Trade (https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/pink-floyd/the-dark-side-of-the-moon-analogue-productions-sacd) as despite the total cost being similar to buying from Acoustic Sounds, it might negate the chance of having to pay customs charges or import duties. The mix on the SACD/CD layer is the same as the 2003 release, but as you’ll see from the unboxing video below, the packaging has been updated with a slipcover, with the disc held in a well-illustrated book housing. For those unfamiliar with the format, SACDs provide high audio quality, and in certain cases (such as this, and the other Floyd SACD, Wish You Were Here) multi-channel, surround mixes too. The TDSOTM and WYWH SACDs both sound superb, and it is worth checking to see if you have suitable equipment to play multichannel SACDs. A number of Sony CD players are compatible with SACDs, and indeed some Playstation consoles play SACDs with no problem. Other makes of CD/DVD/Blu-ray players do support the format, but this varies from model to model. There are a number of “universal” players out there which include SACD in their capabilities. It is worth checking the specifications of players, particularly if you are looking to pick up a cheap, second-hand machine on eBay and suchlike.

Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th anniversary box set announced

Following on from this week’s teaser videos, and whispers and rumours abounding, the official announcement has been made today for Pink Floyd’s celebration of the 50 years since the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon. Apart from a deluxe box set, which is released on March 24th, 2023, there are also standalone releases, Planetarium presentations of the album, and a competition aimed at animators. Rest assured, we have all the details for you here. First, the box set: As you might be able to determine from the picture, the new deluxe box set includes a CD and gatefold vinyl of the new 2023 remastered studio album, and Blu-Ray and DVD audio discs featuring the original 5.1 mix and remastered stereo versions. The set also includes an additional Blu-ray disc of the new Atmos mix plus a CD and vinyl (for the first time) of The Dark Side Of The Moon – Live At Wembley Empire Pool, London, 1974. There’s also a 76-page music book, replicas of two 7″ singles, posters, stickers, a replica invite to the press preview of the album at London Planetarium in February 1973, and Thames & Hudson’s 160-page hardback book with rare and previously unseen photographs from the 1972-1975 tours taken by Jill Furmanovsky, Peter Christopherson, Aubrey Powell, and Storm Thorgerson. On the same day, 24th March, the CD and LP of The Dark Side Of The Moon – Live At Wembley Empire Pool, London, 1974 will be released separately from the box set. It was originally recorded in November 1974 as part of the band’s winter tour and this is the first time it will be available as a stand-alone album, with artwork featuring an original 1973 line-drawn cover by George Hardie. The book Pink Floyd – The Dark Side Of The Moon: 50th Anniversary (which we talked about here on 14th October 2022) will also be published separately by Thames & Hudson on 24th March 24 to coincide with the box set release (which includes it). Curated by photographer Jill Furmanovsky and art directed by Hipgnosis co-founder Aubrey Powell, this LP-sized volume showcases rare and previously unseen photographs taken during The Dark Side Of The Moon tours of 1972-1975 and was created with the involvement of the band members. The 50th Anniversary release will also be celebrated as Pink Floyd have invited a new generation of animators to enter a competition to create music videos for any of the 10 songs on the iconic 1973 album. Pink Floyd has a rich history of collaborating with animators from the beginnings of the band (Ian Emes, Gerald Scarfe etc.), and in some cases the visuals that accompany the songs have become synonymous with the music itself. The 50th Anniversary will be no exception.

High Hopes: David Gilmour – new book

Glenn has now turned to a slightly more specialised, or focused, history. High Hopes: David Gilmour, The Origins of the Voice and Guitar of Pink Floyd has just been announced and published in a limited, numbered edition of 500 hardback books, signed by Glenn along with his co-author Warren Dosanjh. The 124 page book is the most detailed biography of David Gilmour’s early history in print, with Glenn, along with Warren – a lifelong Cambridge resident and also the manager of Syd Barrett’s pre-Pink Floyd band Those Without – tracing Gilmour’s career from the very beginning. The book tells the story of Gilmour’s upbringing, childhood and influences as well as the bands he performed in and sets into context the relationships developed in his hometown of Cambridge. A wealth of previously unpublished photographs, anecdotes from school friends,
former band mates and family are brought together to tell the definitive story of a shy yet determined teenager who went on to become the voice and guitar of Pink Floyd. Many of the recollections and earliest photos are from David’s younger brother Peter Gilmour, along with David’s various early bandmates. We’ve now seen a copy; the amount of detail and information within the book is quite breathtaking at times, and there are many incredible pictures of David in his youth, both in family/childhood contexts, and in his early bands. We urge you to act fast if you want to secure a copy with it being so limited in nature.
